23.01.2022 Would you like to learn how to turn your holiday photos into artwork? there are many ways to achieve an artwork but above all, put in the time and trust the process. Working with your hands can inform your creative ideas. The Sophie Mill School of Art offers solutions, ideas, and new skills to help you achieve an awe-inspiring work of art.

23.01.2022 How do we organise the MIND for our young in an age of information overload? Step 1. paint Step 2. relax Step 3. enjoy a little bit of laughter and comradery in the actual process. Plus, I enjoy Pablo Picassos quote, we all know that Art is not the truth. Art is a lie that makes us realise the truth, at least the truth that is given to us to understand.

22.01.2022 https://vimeo.com/490577143 Happy Christmas to all my budding artists and many friends. Always remember, 'we are meant to keep going'.

20.01.2022 Bruce Garrabrandt once said, Creativity doesnt wait for that perfect moment. It fashions its own perfect moments out of ordinary ones." This is a truth well-spoken. But, since we are locked inside this is the perfect moment to draw, paint, and create something interesting for yourself. I have painted a girl sitting on a ladder. For those who know where I live, you are welcome to peer through the gate (Ive taken the sign down for easy viewing) at each new work on display at the front door. www.sophiemill.com.au

20.01.2022 The Arts and Humanities aren't just there to consume when we have a free moment. We need them like medicine. They help us live. Barack Obama. Sophie Mill School of Art

20.01.2022 I will be observing Wendy Sharpe at the Mosman Gallery next week and I have been invited to take a sketch book. I truly can't wait.

19.01.2022 I enjoy Sir Ken Robinsons take on life and how he articulates logics; he is funny and worth your time.

18.01.2022 When the grant program TWKF offers people the chance to continue their journey to recovery through something they love and are passionate about, the results are phenomenal. See one of our grant receipts, Ebos story here: https://www.thewhiteknightfoundation.com/programs-1

18.01.2022 The art studio is open only for one-on-one tutoring lessons and also home lessons for those suffering from anxiety, depression, or other illnesses. The home lessons are also conducted as class behind glass. In the images below you will see I conduct the lesson from the garden and the student remains inside behind the sealed areas. No brushes, paint or other items are shared. This is especially important for those who are suffering from isolation as well as illness.

18.01.2022 When you first learn to paint it is a good idea to practice looking at Masters; their painting styles will help you to negotiate and understand hard, soft, and lost edges. Poor versus good subject choice, or understanding that shadows vary in value. Once you have a grasp on a few rules it will be more pleasant to paint your own original painting. Below is an example of slowly developing Boats on the Seine at Argenteuil 1875 Claude Monet - STUDENT WORKING. Sophie Mill School of Art

16.01.2022 Wendy Sharpe is known to be a brilliant artist. Perhaps she should also be known as the Eloquent oratory. I was listening to Wendy Sharpe talk about her recent Archibald Painting of Magda Szubanski. Magda is haunted by the demons of her father’s espionage activities in wartime Poland and by her secret awareness of her sexuality, to the complex dramas of adulthood and her need to find out the truth about herself and her family. 'Sharon' is her alter-ego but I never understood ...the depth until yesterday. Without sounding 'gushy' - I had a 'moment'. That 'moment' was awe-inspiring as much as cathartic. Wendy Sharpe is eloquent but relaxed as she takes time out from painting her large mural at Mosman Art Gallery. Photographers are waiting, people looking on, paint drying at great speeds, the radio station asking long questions; Wendy's high emotional intelligence is clear and obvious. https://www.facebook.com/WendySharpeartist/ See more

15.01.2022 SOPHIE MILL SCHOOL OF ART TOURS TO BEGIN 2021 Art is a practice. Enjoying friendships is also a practice. We enjoyed practicing what makes us happy. How many times each day do you mean to say one thing, and say another instead, because youre worried about what others might think? No lifetime, no matter how successful, will be truly rewarding or happy if you cannot learn to love yourself and be yourself. The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself. Friedrich Nietzsche

15.01.2022 An online lesson how to start to paint is offered with this gorgeous Mothers Day gift. In the session you will learn how to put paint on the canvas and how to relax while doing it. Many sessions on YouTube are showcasing the Artists ability which can be confusing and difficult for a newbie. Painting is difficult at first glance, but just like learning any new language, once you understand the alphabet and the rhythms it will all make logical sense and you will be on your way to being an Artist. https://pitaakonda3.wixsite.com/hdsmothersday/workshops

15.01.2022 Monet would say, Everyone discusses my art and pretends to understand as if it were necessary to understand when it is simply necessary to love. I often ask students to simply love what this artist offers. it is a great way to learn without being too overwhelmed by unnecessary extras. The budding artist can concentrate on proportions, likes, and dislikes, plus various brush strokes. This 8-year-old student loves mixing colours, moving paint around a canvas and she loves the challenges of everyday logic. Bookings are full but I am taking booking for the Spring Holiday Programs. www.sophiemill.com.au Sophie Mill School of Art

15.01.2022 Getting STARTED in Painting. You may or may not get it right or you may even fail (not a word I like to use but it serves a purpose for this piece) Author Jodi Picoult summarized the importance of avoiding perfectionism perfectly, you can edit a bad page, but you cant edit a blank page. Art is a practice and it evolves over time. Visual art is not only about practicing art techniques, it enables young children (and adults) to practice emotional intelligence. Being adaptable takes effort. The young student below has had many hours of practicing the importance of, if this doesnt work out we will wait, re-think, re-paint, re-organize, readjust AND adapt to what is in front of us. The outcome has produced much more than just an awe-inspiring picture. Art tutor Sophie Mill (Student age 7) last image year 9 work.

15.01.2022 Visual art is about remembering, hope, sorrow, rebalancing, self-understanding, growth, and appreciation. I have to hope that we will leave behind this sorrow, we will grow, and we will find a way to rebalance. We must also remember to keep moving forward. Once we find our peace again I will be offering our little ones something special; a visual art lesson that includes bringing their friends to paint, sit in the garden, laugh and learn the importance of adapting to lifes lessons.

14.01.2022 These inspiring words will open your mind to fresh perspectives and guide you on your path to artistic success. 1. Painting is a source of endless pleasure, but also of great anguish. Balthus 2. I love to look at art, I love to look at paintings, and I almost feel like the experience isnt complete until Ive made something of my own. Cecily Brown 3.When you want to make the main color pure and bright, dont just keep adding bright colors on it. Just make the colors around the spot darker and dull. It will give the scene dramatical effects. I think the life is the same. Hiroko Sakai 4. I paint for myself. I dont know how to do anything else, anyway. Also I have to earn my living, and occupy myself. Francis Bacon

14.01.2022 Sophie Mill School of Art Artist in Resident for The White Knight Foundation was established in 2013 as a result of a vicious and innocent attack on Liam Knight. Liam was the unfortunate victim of a gatecrashed party where a 2.8m long steel pole was thrown, hitting him and piercing him through his skull. Against the odds, Liam survived, but he continues to endure months and years of rehabilitation. There are many others throughout NSW and Australia that are innocently attac...ked and require significant amounts of rehabilitation. The White Knight Foundation aims to raise awareness as to the outcomes of random acts of violence in particular to the dangers of gatecrashing. Through your generous financial contributions The White Knight Foundation will raise funds to support the challenges that normal Australian families face as a result of this unprovoked violence. 13.01.2022 Ive had plenty of time in the garden to observe various pots that hold the Bird of Paradise. Ive been looking at how the light rests quietly on a cushion, a leaf, even how lights rests on the tip of the nose. Like most people who have lost something they thought was theirs forever. ...finally, we must come to realize that nothing really belongs to us. We must adapt. Art work by Sophie Mill April 2020

12.01.2022 Please enjoy this short documentary.

12.01.2022 I like a quiet studio space and my students (young and oldish) also enjoy the isolating environment away from the immense noise. The calm is a perfect time to create your picture. Learning to paint doesnt have to be difficult, it is a practise and overtime pushing paint around a canvas will offer you the most rewarding sense of achievement and settling satisfaction. I will be posting outback tours for 2021 towards the end of this year. www.sophiemill.com

12.01.2022 Sophie Mill School of ART - Colour is a power which directly influences the soul; that I can promise and guarantee. So between helping the soul and practicing the 10 attributes of sight (darkness, light, solidity, colour, form, distance, propinquity, motion, rest) it is no wonder visual art is an important aspect of our lives. Bookings for 2021 are taking place now.

10.01.2022 In the wake of this global pandemic, I keep thinking about the continuity of the Arts. The Latin word 'curator' is to 'take care of' or manage what is important. We are all curators one way or another. The cancellation of art events and festivals, plus 40% of galleries have closed all over the globe. Sustainability will be foremost; how do we support artists, budding artists, and the school-age children who haven't the tools to start painting and drawing as yet? The simple answer; we adapt. There is no other way around it. 2021 I am opening my garden for visitors to view a wide range of talks, artworks, art programs, and studio space. http://www.sophiemill.com.au

09.01.2022 I love to paint and when I tutor students the logic and perspective, I often hear their delight; it is equivalent to receiving a standing ovation. I think there should be a rule that everyone in the world should get a standing ovation at least once in their lives. R.J. Palacio

09.01.2022 There is no such thing as the pursuit of happiness, but there is the discovery of joy. Joyce Grenfell Learning to paint with Sophie Mill School of Art - based in Newcastle, NSW HTTP://www.sophiemill.com.au

08.01.2022 https://www.thewhiteknightfoundation.com/ one of the main privileges of what I do, I get to paint with awesome people from an array of fascinating cultural backgrounds. (student work in progress)

08.01.2022 STUDENT WORK in progress at the Sophie Mill School of Art - Learning to paint is the most rewarding experience for many more reasons other than, because you get to take a picture home. Painting offers you another perspective in life. It offers you a reason to contemplate and think about the small but important things in life. Most of you have heard the quote, take time to smell the roses. Well, often people can get lost in the big picture which often prevents us from cherishing the small moments that make it all worthwhile - J.R. Wirth

07.01.2022 ART-BEHIND-GLASS Tutoring session continues and it is progressing slowly but surely. Making Art takes time. It is a fallacy to believe Art is achieved with a finished product in 1 or 2 hours; this makes a mockery out of the Art of Painting. "There is no royal road to anything. One thing at a time, all things in succession. That which grows fast, withers as rapidly. That which grows slowly, endures". -- Josiah Gilbert Holland 1. Student at work (behind glass) - Nelson Bay Acrylic on Canvas 2. student work 3. a paint and sip day in the good old days will return in the future
