25.01.2022 Top tips about dog resource guarding

25.01.2022 What a little legend. He is having a ball!

25.01.2022 / ? People often think that seasonal allergies are only relevant to summer....nope! Pollen is around all year long, jus...t different ones. Right now, here are the top 4 culprits in NSW. With grass pollen, your dog is likely worse with freshly cut grass or when the grass is wet. This dampness helps transport the pollen to your dog where it can then pass through a defective skin barrier which is thought to be a genetically inherited condition. Did you know around 40% of dogs are thought to be affected by skin allergies/atopy? ? If your dog is in a bad state, ask your Vet for a referral to a Dermatologist, they can conduct intra-dermal skin testing to see what your dog is reacting to and build immunotherapy vaccinations for your dog. if you have to use medication to give your dog quality of life, then thats what you do. It would be incredibly cruel not to medicate your dog simply because you dont want to. You can always be working on other management systems to help support your dogs immune system that might help them this season but more likely help them when their bodies will be challenged with this again. Seek the help of a holistic/integrative Vet who has experience managing skin conditions without medication if and where possible. Get your dog onto a healthy diet that is anti-inflammatory to support their immune system. This looks like fresh food not processed kibble which is pro-inflammatory due to its high carbs. Learn more about providing a fresh food diet here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/rawandfresh/ If your budget allows, get them onto Antinol Rapid which is a joint formula that we see so many dogs getting improvements in their skin conditions because of its incredibly high and bio-available full spectrum omega-3 - theres nothing on the market than can compete. Our Dane avoided medication last year since being on Antinol and this year hes looking so awesome compared to this time last year! Its a supplement not a drug - if your Vet doesnt stock it, shoot me a DM and Ill hook you up with an online supplier with free shipping. Get your dog onto a pro-biotic STAT! Gut health is the core of the immune system! The Balanced Canine make one called Gut Dust: https://www.balanced-canine.com/my-doggie-boosters When you come back from walks, rinse your dogs feet and legs - you can rinse (not wash) as many times per day as you like - this is one of the most effective yet under-utalised treatments for environmental reactions.

21.01.2022 Purchasing a puppy shouldnt be on a whim, it should be thought about in depth and planned. You are responsible for its new life and integrating it into yours. These are some of the things I always suggest for people to think about when considering purchasing a puppy. Time - Puppies take up a lot of your time, especially with training and teaching them new things. If you have a busy life or job, then consider other options such as a walker or daycare. Money - They cost a lot... of money. On average for the first year puppies can cost anywhere from $3000 - $6000. From every year after that its estimated about $1,500 (this excludes extra vet visits and training costs) Space - Having a specific space for them to be able to sleep, settle, play and toilet is super important. Commitment - The average lifespan of a dog is 10 - 13 years. Please think about your future and if a dog can be apart of it for that many years. Patience - Puppies are hard work, you are teaching them right from the start so this means toilet training, leash walking, sleeping, independence, new behaviours and much more. You need a lot of patience but especially with teaching and training. I also suggest to people to go to sit a puppy before you purchase one, or volunteer in your local shelter. This can give you a better indication of how much work and effort they can be. Puppies and pets shouldnt be disposable, they are for life.

21.01.2022 Please keep your dog on leash unless it is in a designated off leash area

20.01.2022 I get asked so many times How many sessions will this take to fix this behaviour? There are so many factors at play with changing a behaviour and training dogs. Such as, the age of the dog, the prior history of its learning, it’s environment, the commitment, the work the owner puts in, the bond with the owner and dog, how long it has been completing these behaviours for etc... Every dog is an individual and that’s why I take each dog case by case. ... Changing a behaviour can be difficult, and takes time. Just like us humans think how long it takes us to learn a new behaviour and to re-train our brains. For example you could be starting the gym again after a 10 year hiatus. That would be difficult right? But then again maybe easier for some people? It really depends on you as an individual.

16.01.2022 Did you know this about Salt??? Check your kibble, it can be very deceiving...

16.01.2022 Man, where do I start? Look at these ingredients, they're mostly just a bunch of sad cheap plants that have been l...abelled a prescription diet that costs you $250 for 25 kilos. Thank you to one of the posters have alerted us to a recipe change! Petcircle lists the ingredients as: Whole Grain Wheat, Whole Grain Corn, Flaxseed, Chicken Meal, Soybean Mill Run Whilst the Hills website lists the top 5 as; Whole Grain Corn, Chicken By-Product Meal, Flaxseed, Soybean Mill Run, Brewers Rice So, the new formula is worse, they have replaced chicken meal for Chicken By-product meal which is the scraps of processing. There hero of this formula is Flaxseed which provides anti-inflammatory omega-3 to help your dogs joint disease. If you want to add Flaxseeds to your dogs diet, you can get them for $3.30 for half a kilo at Woolworths, be sure to ground them before you give them to your dog. For a small dog, 1/8 teaspoon is a good place to start. For a medium or large dog, try 1 1/2 teaspoons. Chat with your Vet for more specific information for your dogs condition(1). Whilst this J/D formula contains glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate, this is still an incredibly sad formula especially when you consider you could be feeding a healthier more species appropriate diet and simply supplement with these compounds. Just because something says "prescription" doesn't mean it's amazing. Just because your Vet suggests it, doesn't mean it's amazing, it just means they don't know what else to suggest. What does this "food" do to the long term healthy an wellbeing of a dog? This mostly vegetarian recipe is so far from species appropriate that the price tag is just...sad. I have some suggestions though...yep...based in science too, choose one or more and you'll be able to research how much to give, you can also ask your Vet. An anti-inflammatory diet aka a fresh food diet with ingredients selected to fight inflammation in your dogs body. Antinol Rapid - a supplement not a drug with lovely science behind it. I have over 300 clients on it (no, I don't work for them), I've seen dogs on the verge of being put to sleep getting a 2nd chance at life. If you would like an online supplier with free shipping, shoot me a message. MSM powder activated with vitamin C - MSM is affordable and you don't need much! Pair it up with vitamin C to aid bio-availability. Hydrolysed Collagen powder activated with vitamin C - not as cheap as MSM but still ok. Golden Paste - a turmeric food activated by heat and freshly ground black pepper that you can make yourself!!! Join the Turmeric users group to learn more: https://www.facebook.com/groups/OriginalTurmericUserGroup Glucosamine & Chondroitin - find a formula that contains them both as they need to be paired. Dog formulas are available with dog dosing information. Obviously, there's heaps of other things but I just wanted to give you some easy things you can start with, you don't need to feed this sad sad sad "food". Come and learn more about fresh food feeding and the likes at https://www.facebook.com/groups/rawandfresh --- (1) https://www.rover.com/blog/5-ways-add-flax-seed-dogs-diet/.

14.01.2022 Parvovirus outbreak There has been a Parvovirus outbreak in Northern NSW that has been fatal and up to 60 puppies and dogs have passed away. The highly contagio...us virus is spread from dog to dog by direct or indirect contact with their faeces. The recent rain across the region seems to have brought on the outbreak. Scientific studies have shown an association between recent rain and parvo outbreaks. The greatest risk is for puppies that have not had their 16-week vaccination or are younger than 16 weeks and havent been vaccinated in the last month. To prevent infection, all puppies must be vaccinated monthly from six weeks of age, until 16 weeks (four months). Adult dogs in high-risk parvo areas and during outbreaks should be re-vaccinated every year.

12.01.2022 If someone offered you a plain cracker, you might take it, but what if they said "Ill only give you this cracker if you go get my phone for me in the other roo...m". Youd probably pass, unless you were pretty hungry. Now what if someone offered you an artisan cracker with a creamy, soft cheese, fresh smoked salmon and a sprig of dill? Or a crisp cracker with fine, smooth hummus topped with herb tomatoes? Your motivation might change in an instant. But not if you were stressed about a paper you had write, you didnt get a good night sleep and you just heard a knock at the door - then it could be a whole plate of beautifully topped crackers and you wouldnt care. This is the same with our dogs. When you offer lack luster food or train your dog with food at inappropriate times your dog can appear to not be food motivated. Over time when you start resorting to other forms of getting your dogs "attention" you create a dog who looses their value in food. All dogs like eating. Its a biological necessity. But that dry cracker just isnt going to cut it in most situations - and can you blame them?

09.01.2022 We have been getting a lot of calls with owners worried about their pets with the recent Coronavirus outbreak, so here is a list of our frequently asked questio...ns and answers: * Can my pet get Covid -19? No, currently there is no evidence that this strand of Coronavirus can be transmitted to pets. * What about the Greyhound case in Geelong? This was the Canine Coronavirus which has always been present in Australia and is NOT related to the Covid - 19 virus. The Greyhounds have been quarantined and it is highly unlikely to spread. * How did a dog in Hong Kong test positive? This dog was in close contact with an infected human, who was likely shedding large quantities of the virus. This led to the virus particles being in the dogs nose without it actually being infected. In short, there was Coronavirus on the dog just like there was Coronavirus on the floor in the room but the dog was not infected or diseased. * Is there a vaccine for Covid - 19? There is currently no vaccine for animals or humans against Covid - 19 For more information read the following article https://wsava.org//COVID-19_WSAVA-Advisory-Document-Feb-29

05.01.2022 Breaking News: Finally an answer to what toxin caused the canine megaesophagus outbreak in 2017/2018 linked to Mars Petcare brand Advance Dermocare, a brand we ...discouraged due to being predominantly corn yet marketed as a tuna recipe. The outbreak knowingly affected over 100 dogs including a number of Melbourne police dogs. A sad number resulted in death, but every case is a heartbreaking struggle given the nature of the disease. A recent outbreak affected another brand, VeganPet. Thankfully this manufacturer did what Mars Petcare and associated researchers at Melbourne University U-Vet were unable to do - find and publicise the cause. In a recent statement, VeganPet found the affected batch to contain "abnormally high levels of a mycotoxin, Fumonisin". This mycotoxin is known to originate as a crop disease which affects corn or maize. VeganPet have removed all manufacturing from the ingredient supplier to ensure safety in subsequent batches. After the 2017/2018 outbreak Mars Petcare chose to reformulate their brands, conveniently opting for rice and rice flour as an alternative to corn. The outbreak instigated a Senate investigation into the Safety of Pet Food which unearthed a number of issues with Australian pet food regulations. To date no significant progress has been made. 04.01.2022 Tug is not bad That Dog School

01.01.2022 In society these days some people have a miscontrused conception of what a social dog actually is. * It isn’t the dog that runs up the everyone and everything. * It also isn’t the dog that wants to play with every single dog. * It isn’t the dog that gets up and jumps in dogs personal space... * It is the dog that reads body language and reacts appropriately * It is able to communicate and disengage when feeling uncomfortable or overwhelmed * It does display a series of invites, back offs and alternating play Socialisation is being able to build a tolerance of others in your personal space. It takes time for dogs to trust and build relationships. Next time you are out with your dog watch carefully of the body language it is displaying.
