13.01.2022 Tibetan government in exile seeks Centre's permission to treat Covid-19 patients the Tibetan Medical and Astro-Science Institute of His Holiness the Dalai Lama ...has sought permission from the Indian government to give free medical services to the Covid-19 patients given the vast knowledge of ancient Tibetan system of medicines and the availability of different herbal remedies. While talking to TOI, Tashi Tsering Phuri, Director, Men-Tsee-Khang said We have medicine, we have doctors, we have patients all we need is the permission. Claiming to have received encouraging results of Tibetan medicines on covid 19 patients, he said The herbs which our doctors identify and dispense were being used for decades to treat similar cases. In the recent past China announced good results to Tibetan herbs. Some Tibetan health care givers in New York who were tested positive testified that Tibetan herbs played an effective role in putting their health back to normalcy adding that by October end, their Research and Development department would bring out a report with patient testimonials, for their 8 months services. The Director informed that they had written a letter seeking permission to use Sowa Rigpa on Covid-19 patients to the minister of health and family welfare Dr Harsh Vardhan. According to the ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy (AYUSH ) Sowa-Rigpa is one of the oldest, living and well documented medical traditions popular in the world. We have identified around 40 different herbal remedies for prevention as well as treating covid-19 cases. We have not prepared any new herbal formulae to treat covid-19 cases. Rather, these were used with great appreciation during the SARS outbreak he said . He said the Men-Tsee-Khang external emergency team would be happy to volunteer and conduct support through their system of healing to the affected patients. The herbs will be dispensed free of cost to the patients . We can be of service at this challenging time he said. He informed that Covid-19 problems in Tibetan settlements in Dharamsala and Chauntra in Kangra and Mandi districts of Himachal Pradesh respectively were minimal in comparison to those in Delhi and elsewhere in India. Tashi Tsering said that immune boosters were given free to the Tibetan refugees in all settlements in India, Nepal and Bhutan to the elders above 65 years of age, front-line health care providers, those kept in quarantine for 14 days etc. Free treatment is given to all Tibetan and other coronavirus positive till they turn negative he said. Since it was neither possible for Covid-19 patients to physically visit a clinic for medical consultation nor it was convenient for their doctors to visit the patient for pulse diagnosis so in that case Men-Tsee Khang has begun Tele-Consultation service wherein the patients could dial any doctor and after interaction the prescribed medicine could be picked up from the clinic free of cost on fulfilling certain criteria.
