24.01.2022 News about the SIGBI conference

24.01.2022 Nice to see the brooch/pendant I designed for the Centenary getting its first airing across the world of SI at the SI Board meeting yesterday. Contact SIGBI if you wish to order one. They will be released for sale around the beginning of September.

23.01.2022 Saturday evening - a happy (but exhausted) group of AVP-ers at the end of their Peaceful Pathways to Conflict Resolution workshop. So many life experiences amon...gst this diverse group of facilitators and participants, each of them so willing to trust, and to share their stories. A+ for community building, everyone. We all left with great hope for the future and plans for further collaborative ventures! See more

23.01.2022 Another women's health issue which is sadly overlooked. Thank you Kath Mazzella for your ongoing campaign for awareness.

23.01.2022 Its going to be a sad day when we lose King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women in Western Australia - just saying could be years away but still sad.

22.01.2022 Extremely disappointing news. MESSAGE FROM HEADQUARTERS. CANCELLATION 100 YEAR CELEBRATION IN SAN FRANCISCO. As we have been eagerly awaiting, in October 202...1, our organization will celebrate our 100th anniversary and we have been planning a worldwide celebratory event worthy of this remarkable milestone. Together with the Local Arrangements Committee members Pam Parker, Bobbi Enderlin, Tana Elizondo, and Vicki Watson, we were planning the event for October 1 3, 2021 at the Fairmont San Francisco Hotel to celebrate our bright past and our brilliant future. When the SIA board of directors met in July 2020, we reviewed our plans for the 100th Anniversary Celebration Event. Our conversation was guided by the health and safety of our members and the mission and values of Soroptimist. Given the global nature of the event, our member demographics and the reality of physical distancing, the travel and hospitality industries and the uncertain duration of these conditions, we directed staff to speak with the Fairmont San Francisco Hotel about options. Our conclusion was that while we do not know what our world will look like in October 2021, we do not feel comfortable planning and marketing a celebratory event in the midst of a global pandemic and global recession. And while we know how important it is to celebrate our past accomplishments and plan for our future, we feel the event we envisioned is no longer possible. After reviewing our options, we directed staff to negotiate the termination of the Fairmont San Francisco contract and thus cancel our responsibility as executive producers of the Soroptimist worldwide 100th Anniversary Celebration Event in October 2021. The negotiations between SIA and the Fairmont San Francisco Hotel have concluded successfully, and we can confirm the Soroptimist 100th Anniversary Celebration Event contract has been terminated. While we will not be together at the Fairmont, we most certainly still plan to celebrate. Alternate ideas will be researched for celebrating our 100th Anniversary another way and options presented to the 2020-2021 SIA Board of Directors in January. I commend our talented, dedicated, and creative SIA staff and volunteers who have worked tirelessly to create a celebration befitting our 100th Anniversary. We look forward to the restructured but equally remarkable celebration plans that are underway and will be shared.

19.01.2022 Our first Regional Virtual Conference held today brought many of us together for the first time in 6 months. Cathy Cotteridge our first speaker brought us up-to...-date on the Centenary preparations for next year. We were encouraged to plant trees to build a brilliant future and and change our search engines to ECOSIA to raise funds for eco-projects. A lunch at the House of Lords is planned on 12th May next year to celebrate Soroptimist Internationals Centenary, lets hope this will enable us to come together face-to-face. Our second speaker was Phillip Holmes, Founder and CEO of the Chora Chori project in Nepal our Federation project. Unfortunately COVID has put a hold on a number of the projects work plans are ready for when work can resume. SIGBI have funded a skills training centre for girls who have been rescued from trafficking. The Big Story was a success and Chora Chori are looking into producing artisan products made from Natural Fibres and Essential oils. Check out Fibre Weave and Lilys Leaves. We are asked to delay further donations until the next match-funding session beginning 1st December. Federation President Isobel Smith confirmed that our total donations across the Federation now stands at 51,000 and we are Chora Choris major funded. The cost of providing a teacher is 170 per month. Our final speakers were Tom Mecrow from RNLI and Mohammed from the Panje Project Zanzibar. The project provides Aquatic Survival programmes which teach water safety education and practical swimming. In 2014 the programme targeted women and girls as historically women and girls didnt swim. Engaging with local communities they overcame challenges which included designing costumes which covered heads, arms and hands, training female swimming instructors to hold girl-only lessons. Federation President Isobel was looking forward to and encouraging us to join the virtual conference broadcast from Belfast and a Social Media Campaign being launched in a couple of weeks time to promote volunteering through Soroptimism. Thank you to the Regional team for organising the Conference. See more

19.01.2022 Well done SI Albany

19.01.2022 A giant has left the stage. May her memory be a revolution. We acknowledge the work of Ruth Bader Ginsburg US Supreme Court judge, an iconic champion of wome...n's rights. Today we mourn, but with confidence that future generations will remember Ruth Bader Ginsburg as we knew her - a tireless and resolute champion of justice. At the core of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburgs extraordinary life was a simple conviction: Women belong, she said, in all places where decisions are being made. Vale Ruth Bader Ginsberg. #siaustralia #womenbelong #womensrightsarehumanrights

18.01.2022 Its time. 16 days of activism to end violence.

17.01.2022 A recent feedback: This is what the GYNae campaign is all about. "All the women really enjoyed the session. Learning about their anatomy in a practical and enga...ging way was much easier to retain the panties allow the women to have some fun as well as to have something to keep and refer to. Some of the women may never have had the education that showed them what is inside of them. Yes they have had babies etc but just did what they were told without any knowledge of why and how. The older women had no idea that other things could go wrong in that area so this awareness is very empowering. The little "If Only I knew " booklets were also a great way to keep the knowledge handy, in your bag, and to be able to share with the others. Your narrative and explanations were very clear and good. Thank you, it was great."

16.01.2022 Dato Anusha Santhirasthipam informing the delegates of what this COC is all about, and how we as Soroptimist need to go to the grass roots to inspire women to grow, empower, embrace, prosper & build bridges that can transcend all racial, cultural & religious beliefs. #siswpcoc2020

13.01.2022 #siswpcoc2020 President Fay and members of SI Helena send congratulations to the COC Organising Committee on the success of the 2020 SISWP Virtual conference. The logistics of maintaining the streaming and getting all the presentations to us with almost NO hiccups was a monumental task which was handled so very professionally. The amazing presentations were inspiring and I’m sure have given renewed impetus to members to continue their work to improve the status of women & girls. Let us hope we can all get to Fiji in 2022.

05.01.2022 The harsh reality of the COVID-19 pandemic is that while overall crime statistics reduced in recent months, there was one glaring exception - family and domesti...c violence. Today I joined Premier Mark McGowan and sector leaders to announce that we are investing more than $28 million in a comprehensive package of family and domestic violence support services as part of the WA Recovery Plan. The package includes: $8.6 million for 23 additional outreach workers to support women and children experiencing family and domestic violence $6.7 million to bolster the State's family and domestic violence response teams that assist individuals and families following a police call-out $4 million to double the capacity of the women's refuges under construction in Peel and Kwinana $123,000 for a job retraining pilot for women in refuges; and $1.1 million for counselling, advocacy and support services. This significant investment is underpinned by the McGowan Government's new long-term strategy to reduce family and domestic violence across Western Australia. Thanks to the Women's Council for Domestic & Family Violence Services - WA's Anne Moore and Stopping Family Violence CEO Damian Green for helping to launch 'Path to Safety: Western Australia's strategy to reduce family and domestic violence 2020-2030'. Responding to family and domestic violence in the community is key to WAs social recovery from this challenging period.

04.01.2022 The Midland March that Matters (MMTM) is always a well attended event. The 7th Annual March was held today. Nearly 500 community members supported by the Police Pipe Band marched around the streets of Midland to take a stand against Domestic Violence. Statistics have shown the COVID-19 pandemic has had severe consequences for families. Attendees included Minister for Police, Michelle Roberts (State MP for Midland) and City of Swan Mayor, Kevin Bailey. A harrowing first-hand account was related by DV survivor Azelene Williams. We were entertained by NAIDOC Week Award winning singer, Natasha Eldridge and children from Moorditj Noongar Community College. Members from SI Helena also attended to march and Walk the Talk
