18.01.2022 https://www.foxsports.com.au//9cf82eee33ee1697bbeec3c1807c Recall October 2016 when SOSFAI reported on Ben Simmons' broken foot requiring surgery. This was an injury sustained at training and he was yet to play an actual game in the NBA! We are pleased to note that the only things Ben has broken since then, are a steady stream of longstanding records. He is averaging 18.7 points per game, 9.2 rebounds, and 7.6 assists. He is the first NBA player since Shaquille O'Neal in 19...92 to record four double-doubles to start his career. Ben is also the first Aussie ever to record a triple double in the NBA. To further put things in perspective, he amassed more points, rebounds, and assists in his first 5 games than the great Michael Jordan. Hard to believe he has come back so hard and so strong a year after a Jones fracture. This is testimony to good surgery, good rehab, and most importantly, a determined and committed patient. We wish Ben all the best for the season and seasons to come. Drs Ling and Lunz, SOSFAI

15.01.2022 Dr Jeff Ling discusses Ankle Ligament Reconstruction... Cam Newton, quarterback for the Carolina Panthers, underwent a ligament reconstruction of his ankle in 2014. He had suffered from instability issues in this ankle since college. On return from surgery in 2015, Newton became the first quarterback in NFL history to throw for at least 30 touchdowns and rush for 10 in the same season. He capped off the season by capturing MVP honours and leading the Carolina Panthers to a 1...51 record and a trip to the Super Bowl. Ankle ligament reconstruction is performed in people with unstable ankles that don't respond to physiotherapy. The modified Brostrom also known as the Brostrom-Gould procedure, is the gold standard of treatment. We begin by making an incision over the outside of the ankle. The ankle ligaments are identified and are then tightened using stitches and anchors that are placed into one of the bones of the ankle (the fibula bone). Stitching additional tissue over the repaired ligaments further strengthens the repair. When the patient's tissues are more lax, also known as "ligamentous laxity", we may supplement the repair with an "Internal Brace" which is made from a synthetic material known as fibre-tape. The results of this type of reconstruction are excellent, with great patient satisfaction and an exceptionally low recurrence rate.

13.01.2022 http://www.nba.com//celtics-gordon-hayward-suffers-lower-l Our thoughts go out to Gordon Hayward, Boston Celtics forward who went down yesterday with a gruesome fracture-dislocation of his ankle. This is by no means the end of his career, however, it takes at least 6 months to return to any hard cutting sport like basketball after any ankle fracture, so it is unlikely he will play again this season.... We wish Gordon, and the Boston Celtics a very speedy recovery. SOSFAI

11.01.2022 Dr Jeff Ling and Dr David Lunz discuss reconstruction of the syndesmosis... Sean McMahon has had a bad run with injury this year. This started with an ankle syndesmosis injury which required reconstruction in the off-season, meaning he missed much of the Super rugby season. However, his performance last Saturday night where he was outstanding off the back of the scrum and had the most run metres of any Wallaby forward show that his lengthy rehab for his ankle is complete. The... syndesmosis is the ligament complex that binds the fibula to the tibia just above the ankle joint. When the foot is forcibly twisted externally, this ligament complex can tear resulting in what is known as a "high ankle sprain". Whilst lower grade sprains can be treated non-operatively in a boot, higher grade sprains can require reconstruction. Results of such a reconstruction are typically good and can allow return to high level sport again. We wish Sean and the rest of the Wallaby squad best of luck in Perth versus the Springboks this weekend. http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au//a4e3712870a532caf3b3af86

09.01.2022 He was told he would never surf again. Earlier this week, Australia's big wave surfer, Mark Mathews caught his first barrell in nearly 2 years, after coming back from a devastating injury where he nearly lost his leg. In late 2016, he landed on a reef, dislocating his knee, severing the main artery and nerve to the leg, resulting in an inability to lift up his foot.... After multiple surgeries, Mark came to me at Prince of Wales, and had the tendon on the side of his foot (tibialis posterior) transferred to the top of his foot, to allow him to voluntarily lift his foot up again, and allow him a chance to surf again. Whilst his recovery is ongoing, his progress to date is a testimony to his steely determination, courage, and the dedication and support of his clinicians and family. Mark, best wishes for the rest of your recovery. Dr Jeff Ling, SOSFAI https://www.instagram.com/markmathewssurf/?hl=en
