19.01.2022 From yesterdays Office of Readings (in the Liturgy of the Hours): What kind of people are we? When God gives, we wish to receive, but when he begs, we refuse to give. Remember, it was Christ who said: I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat. When the poor are starving, Christ too hungers. Do not neglect to improve the unhappy conditions of the poor, if you wish to ensure that your own sins be forgiven you. Christ hungers now, my brethren; it is he who deigns to hunger a...nd thirst in the persons of the poor. And what he will return in heaven tomorrow is what he receives here on earth today. What do you wish for, what do you pray for, my dear brothers and sisters, when you come to church? Is it mercy? How can it be anything else? Show mercy, then, while you are on earth, and mercy will be shown to you in heaven. A poor person asks you for something; you ask God for something. He begs for a morsel of food; you beg for eternal life. Give to the beggar so that you may merit to receive from Christ. For he it is who says: Give and it will be given to you. It baffles me that you have the impudence to ask for what you do not want to give. Give when you come to church. Give to the poor. Give them whatever your resources will allow. ~St. Caesarius of Arles

17.01.2022 In Childrens Liturgy for the 22 Sunday in Ordinary Time we learn about why we should follow Jesus.

17.01.2022 This month on APRE Thoughts we introduce Kellie Richardson, APRE of Star of the Sea School who talks to us about the importance of role models in our lives. Everyone needs role models in their life and I have been blessed with some of the best. One of the greatest being my Grandmother. No matter what it was I needed my Grandma could help me, she had all the answers and always had time. She was a mother of 9 herself, had 21 grandchildren and now has 20 great grandchildren,... so she was very well experienced. Grandma was a faith filled woman and greatly influenced my faith journey. She was the person who taught me to hold faith, no matter what came my way. This year was ten years since I last spoke to Grandma, but her message to me is still very strong and I still feel her guiding my decisions. September is the month that we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Name of Mary. Our school considers Mary a role model and we strive daily to be more like Jesus and Mary. We pride ourselves on letting our lights shine by being the best versions of ourselves. Taking time to reflect on images of Mary and passages from the Bible can help us to realise the many special qualities that can be found in Mary. She was a woman who was generous of Spirit, she was mindful and authentic. Mary lived her life with genuine humility and radiated a loving kindness in her interactions with others. Mary stood up for what she believed and recognised Gods hand in every event and everything around her. Marys heart was always open to new possibilities. Through The Annunciation we hear that Mary accepted that she was the Lords servant. I am the Lords servant, Mary answered. May your word to me be fulfilled. Then the angel left her. Luke 1:38 And from The Visitation we realise that Mary is blessed because she has heard and believed. And Mary said: My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, Luke 1:46 47 With age comes an appreciation of what we have been blessed with throughout our lives and I now know that Grandma was the perfect role model for me as she had many of the same qualities that Mary had. I pray that everyone has role models in their loves to help guide them in being the best version of themselves. Take care and choose kind Kellie Richardson

14.01.2022 Today we celebrate the feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica - the Pope's cathedral church in Rome - which is called "the Mother and Head of all Churches of the City and the World." The words of Caesarius of Arles from today's Office of Readings show us the profound link between our Church buildings and our own souls: "If we want to celebrate the birthday of this Church with true joy, we must not destroy the living temple of God within us by our sins...Do you want this basilica to be spotless? Do not defile your own soul with the filth of sin. If you want it to appear radiant with light, God also desires that your soul be not plunged in darkness, but that, in our Lord's words, 'the light of good works shine in us to give glory to him who is in heaven.'"

14.01.2022 Today is the feast of St Monica, who prayed ceaselessly for the conversion of her son Augustine. May she continue to be the heavenly support of all parents who pray with tears for their children

01.01.2022 Culturally Catholic Adult Faith chatted with some of our Parishioners about the celebration of the Assumption of Our Lady in different parts of the world. Here are some of the different ways Mary is honoured around the globe on this day. Cultural Celebrations on the Feast of the Assumption ... Suzanne Manhertz tells us that Our Lady of the Assumption is the patroness of Jamaica. The Roman Catholic Church dedicated Jamaica to Our Lady in 1953, two years after the island was ravaged by hurricane Charlie. There is an annual national pilgrimage to the Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Morant Bay, St Thomas parish, Jamaica. There is a rosary praying procession through the town, during which pilgrims plead for intercession to protect the country from natural disasters. This is followed by the sharing of a meal. In Jamaica the traditional dish eaten is curried goat meat with rice and peas. The day closes with Mass. Elita Picardo recalls that the 15th of August is a dual celebration for the Christian community of India - the Assumption of our Blessed Mother and the countrys Independence Day. The reason why these events are related is because they are both about Freedom. Churches are decorated with garlands of orange and yellow marigold blossoms while white bunting and lights are set up around the shrines of Our Lady. After a morning Mass, the flag is hoisted while the National Anthem is played and prayers are said for the motherland as well for women and the girl child in India. In Goa, Mumbai and Mangalore on the West Coast a special sweet is made to commemorate the occasion using field rice, coconut and molasses and is then steamed and scented with turmeric leaves. Jelena Bajzek Potocki reminisces wistfully about the magnificent Assumption celebrations held in Croatia. The celebration is grand with many believers making pilgrimages to the Marian Shrines. There are a number of these in Croatia and there is a long-standing tradition of worshipping the blessed Virgin Mary who is a special comfort during difficult times and troubles. People pray to Our Lady for help and rely on her heavenly intercession. She is honoured with the title Queen of the Croats also known as fidelissima advocata Croatiae translated as Most faithful Advocate of Croatia. In the shrine at Aljmas, preparations for the feast are made the day before and begin with a walking pilgrimage that lasts through the night in order to attend the 6am Mass. Some of the distances are over forty kilometres. The idea behind the walk is to preserve fundamental Croatian values through prayer and pilgrimage so that newer generations understand their moral, cultural, natural and historical heritage. After Mass many Croatians visit relatives and friends who prepare lunches and dinners that feature many traditional homemade cakes. Croatian children eagerly await the yearly markets where they can buy sweets, toys and go on amusement park rides.
