25.01.2022 Its been a while since we communicated, but things are moving forward behind the scenes. On Monday night, 23 October 2017, the City of Unley held their monthly meeting for Unley Councillors. A motion was passed to establish a working party to look at options for the Civic Precinct area bounded by Unley Rd, Edmund Ave, Rugby St and Oxford St. This is the area inclusive of St Augustines Church, Halls and presbytery, Unley Town Hall, Civic Centre and library and the Unley Vill...age Green (the villas and associated grassed areas). The aim is to engage with nominated community members and Councillors, from across all of the City of Unley, to gain ideas, options and opportunities for this valued resource into the future. A report would then be prepared for Councillors to consider sometime in the future and a community consultation process would occur to highlight the preferred option, options or plan. Currently there is no timeline, however one can speculate this will be established by the working group in their first few meetings. The working group will be comprised of: A Presiding officer from administration 1 x Representative from St Augustines Church 3 x City of Unley Councillors (Councillors Boisvert, Hewitson and Lapidge) 4 x Community representatives (Residents have to formally apply to gain selection) It is not known, at this time, how these 4 community representatives will be selected and by which criteria. Not with standing this, an advertisement will be placed on the City of Unley website, http://www.unley.sa.gov.au/home, and in the Messenger Press newspaper sometime in the near future. We would encourage all interested people who live in the City of Unley area to consider nominating.

23.01.2022 Are you a concerned City of Unley Resident who is opposed to high rise development in your backyard? Join us at the City of Unley Council on Thursday 30 March at 7pm. Your Councillors will vote on the Unley Central Precinct Development Plan Amendment. Which will determine whether or not the plan to build up to 11 stories in the Unley area. For more information visit http://www.sosunleyvillagegreen.com.au/

23.01.2022 Presented a deputation at the council meeting last night Focus was on the poor community consultation and the exclusion of the Unley Ward Councillor from the vote this Thursday...hardly fair that the Unley Ward has no representation and this affects the Ward directly. Contact your Councillors and urge them to leave the Village Green and scrap the concept Plan to allow future 5 storey development in that space.

21.01.2022 Perhaps there are more opportunities to increase residential density without the need to further increase the number of high rise development in suburban areas. Use what Adelaide has but which is currently vacent. Have a read of the latest opinion piece in InDaily Why SA should introduce a broad-based "vacant property" tax... South Australia should follow Victoria's lead and introduce a tax on disused properties, argues Ross Womersley. http://indaily.com.au//why-sa-should-introduce-a-broad-ba/

21.01.2022 Hi Everyone While the Unley Village Green has been saved from residential development, SOS recognises there is an opportunity to consider how the area can best be enjoyed by current and future residents of Unley. As a community based group we would value your opinion on possible improvements (if any) to the Unley Village Green. We invite you to share your opinions on what you would and would not support, by completing this survey, https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/unleyvillagegreen.

21.01.2022 SOSUnleyVillageGreen can report the outcomes from last nights City of Unley Council Meeting devoted to resolving the Citys position on the Unley Central Precinct DPA. Overall the resolutions passed reflected much of what SOS Unley Village Green was advocating and for this we thank Councillors for what has been a challenging and at times distressing time for all. The motions put and passed by Council were described in discrete sections of land bordered by streets or landmark...s east and west of Unley Road. I trust I report the outcomes accurately in laypersons language rather than the procedural motions passed at the meeting. However in essence: * The Unley Village Green is a prescribed area which retains the current Villas, Cottages and grassed area with no change * The current Civic Centre included the car park was set at 3 storeys * No residential use will be allowed on this Council owned land bordering Unley Road, Edmond Avenue, Rugby Street and Oxford Terrace * The northern side of Oxford Terrace between Unley Road and Rugby Street to be 3 storeys * The eastern side of Unley Road between Oxford and Marion Streets to be 5 stories * The western side of Unley Road north between Arthur and Mary Streets to be 9 storeys * The western side of Unley Road south of Arthur Street and adjacent to the Soldiers Memorial Gardens (The Unley Shopping Centre footprint) to be 7 storeys * The western side of Unley Road bordered by Thomas Street, Mornington Road adjacent to the Soldiers Memorial Gardens and Mornington House 5 storeys We await the Planning Ministers response once the Council has submitted this plan. Thank you for all your support and encouragement throughout this process.

20.01.2022 The Council Meeting Minutes for last Thursday 30 March 2017, dedicated to the City of Unley Central Precinct DPA have been released and available for download and review. Until they are passed as a true and correct record of the meeting at the Councils April meeting they are subject to amendment. http://www.unley.sa.gov.au//Council-Minutes-30-March-2017.

19.01.2022 As you may be aware there has been no announcement from the Unley Council as to the membership of the proposed Civic Precinct Development Working Group (which incorporates the Unley Village Green). Some 64 people have self nominated themselves to be part of the group but to date no resolution has occurred. It is believed that advice has been received by the City of Unley that the 3 nominated elected members, from the 23 October 2017 meeting, would have a conflict of inte...rested if they sat on this group and then voted on any future recommendation/s put before Council for consideration and resolution. As a consequence at the 29 January 2018 meeting Councillors resolved to amend the group to exclude elected members and increase community representation. As a result the following was agreed to: The Civic Precinct Development Working Group be established to assist in developing a precinct plan for the area bounded by Unley Road, Oxford Terrace, Rugby Street and Edmund Avenue, with the Working Group to commence activity from January 2018. Membership of the Civic Precinct Development Working Group consist of: a) relevant City of Unley staff b) 1 representative from St Augustines Parish, and c) 6 community members We will post further information once we know more. 11.01.2022 It's been a while since our last post on saving the Unley Village Green, so here is an update. The "Unley Civic Centre Precinct Working Group" has been selected from interested people. As a reminder this group was established and approved at a City of Unley Council meeting as an interest group who can provide advice to councillors for any future/potential planning opportunities for the area bounded by Unley Road, Edmund Ave, Rugby Street and Oxford Terrace. ... It comprises 6 community representatives plus 1 from St Augustine's Anglican Church. In addition 3 staff, Peter Tsokas-CEO, Ben Willsmore-Manager Urban Planning, Design & Traffic and Tami Norman-Executive Manager Office of the CEO, will attend and support the working group's meetings. Of the 6 community representatives, Peter Simmonds and Emma Battams were supported by SOS Unley Village Green Inc and the Friends of the City of Unley Society, Inc, (FOCUS) executives, respectively. The first meeting was tonight 15 March 2017 where introductions, a review of the Terms of Reference and a brainstorming of a vision statement for the Working Group/Precinct occured. It's early days however community comments are welcome.

10.01.2022 InDaily has just published an article by urban planner, Kevin OLeary who worked for over 25 years in the state planning department. Kevin's article is titled "Five steps to prevent Adelaide losing its urban soul". He recommends that Adelaide 1. Preserves the full integrity of heritage buildings and places,... 2. Has more low to mid-rise apartment blocks rather than high-rise apartment towers, 3. Protects the character of high streets, and 4. Ensures infill development retains the character and amenity of our older suburbs. It is relevant that he quotes urban planning expert Edward McMahon, Senior Resident Fellow at the US Urban Land Institute who states: Over the past 50 years many of the worlds cityscapes and townscapes have gone from the unique to the uniform, from the stylized to the standardized. He maintains that the most economically and socially prosperous cities in the future will be the ones which preserve their distinctiveness distinctiveness which is derived from their streetscapes, architecture and historic preservation. 09.01.2022 You may be aware that Council has resolved to establish a Civic Precinct Development Working Group to assist with consideration of opportunities that would enhance the existing facilities and assets in the area bounded by Unley Road, Oxford Terrace, Rugby Street and Edmund Avenue. Council resolved to conduct an expression of interest process to identify the four (4) community members that will be appointed to the Working Group. The expression of interest process is now live on the City of Unley website (refer http://www.unley.sa.gov.au//expression-of-interest--civic) and a notice has appeared in the Messenger. Nominations are open until 1 December. There is an online nomination form available via the above link.

09.01.2022 City council decision-making paralysed by conflicts of interest InDaily - http://indaily.com.au//city-council-decision-making-paral/ Conflict of Interest under the Local Government Act seems to be becoming out of control and some intervention needs to occur. As reported today in the Adelaide based online publication InDaily, Unley Council and our Councillor are not alone. It appears to be happening all across South Australia. As a result, poor ineffective and possibly wrong... decisions affecting residents and SA citizens will be made under the guise of local government decision making at work. This is wrong, wrong, wrong. The Adelaide City Council was legally prevented from making any decision on a modification to King William Street and a parklands events policy at its meeting last night because too many councillors declared conflicts of interest and excluded themselves from voting.

07.01.2022 Well everyone there has been some movement on the direction of the Unley Village Green. As you may remember the City of Unley elected members established the Civic Precinct Working Group to assist in the development of a precinct plan for the City of Unley Civic Precinct the area bounded by Unley Road, Oxford Terrace, Rugby Street and Edmund Terrace). Members on working group came from expressions of interest from people who live in the Unley Council area which was adverti...sed in both print and online forms. Although initially it was to include elected Councillors, it was decided that such inclusion may result in a perceived conflict of interest when future decisions were being considered. After 5 working group meetings an update report was presented to elected members at the Council meeting, Monday 23rd July 2018. You can view this report in full from Pages 29 to 113 in the papers provided to elected Councillors. https://www.unley.sa.gov.au//Council-Agenda-23-July-2018-P Respectful comments are welcome.

06.01.2022 Some Neigbours catching up for Xmas Drinks on the Unley Village Green Sunday (17th) 4-6pm - hope to see you there

05.01.2022 Hi, Appreciate if you could help Focus In getting the council to save these great all trees on Fairford street..sadly another example of not in my backyard even though they were there before any of the houses in Unley existed

04.01.2022 While the City of Unley Councillors consider the future they want for the residents' of Unley, we hope they realise that their decision may either enhance or destroy the character of the area. The City of Unley area is already the most densely populated council area in South Australia. In fact, the City of Unley has twice the population density of the City of Adelaide. Please see the submission Christopher Short made to the Council meeting last night on this topic here: http...://bit.ly/2obr5l0 Let development be in keeping with the present beauty of the Unley area. Other world class cities have equal or higher population densities to Unley while retaining their historic beauty and amenity. We implore our Councillors to think beyond the ugly boxes that are being erected in Adelaide and Prospect. Restrict height limits to those in keeping with the strongly expressed view of Unley residents. ****To those concerned please come to the City of Unley Council meeting on Thursday 30 March at 7.00pm where the Councillors will vote of the Central Precinct DPA. Express your support for the view of SOSUnleyVillageGreen.*** Remember that the other suburbs of the City of Unley - Millswood, Parkside, Unley Park, Wayville, South Australia, Australia, Fullarton, Malvern, South Australia, Clarence Park, Myrtle Bank, Goodwood Orphanage Park, Forestville, Highgate, South Australia, Australia, Black Forest, Everard Park or Hyde Park - may be next to be zoned for high rise development. This will likely be unstoppable if the DPA2 debate turns the wrong way. If you want to protect the heritage and liveability of your area, please come and support your fellow residents in the City of Unley.

04.01.2022 For the Interest of SOS Unley Village Green Civic Precinct Working Group - Meeting Notes - Thursday March 15, 2018 6.30pm... Venue: Civic Bar Area, Council Chambers 181 Unley Road, Unley In attendance: Kay Anastasiadis, Emma Battams, Simon Frost, Brendan Lott, Andrew Marshall, Duncan Rayner, Peter Simmonds Staff in attendance: Peter Tsokas, Ben Willsmore, Tami Norman 1. Introduction - Members were welcomed to the first meeting of the Civic Precinct Working Group (CPWG) - A brief background to the CPWG was provided - Members gave a brief introduction of themselves and their interest in the CPWG 2. Site Walk Tour - Members walked the Civic Precinct and viewed the various components, comprising Council buildings, St. Augustines buildings, Cottages on Edmund Ave and Oxford Tce and the Village Green - Observations were made regarding the look/feel of the various spaces/buildings, current use, connections with surrounding elements (eg Rugby-Porter bikeway). Some points noted: * Civic Centre entrance is a long way back from Unley Road, and the entrance (and second library entrance) is not obvious to people who are unfamiliar with the area * Village Green feels a bit like someones backyard given the cottages surrounding the area * The space has quite an inward looking feel to it, with accessibility from Unley Rd through to Rugby Street not obvious * The various spaces and how they connect are not immediately obvious/visible from a number of different access points * The cottages in Edmund Avenue are not readily open to the general community. 3. Future Meetings - The group identified Thursdays as the preferred meeting day, and agreed that monthly meetings would be convened initially. - The group agreed that a commitment of 12 months in the first instance was appropriate. - It was agreed that the focus of the next meeting would be to develop a vision and related objectives for the space. Consideration will include long term and short term elements/timeframes. 4. Terms of Reference - The group confirmed the draft Terms of Reference were appropriate and could be finalised. - Members agreed to the listing of individual names within the Terms of Reference.

03.01.2022 Read the deputation from Vass resident of Edmund Avenue which will be directly affected if the council elects to put 5 storeys on the Green - after last night's council meeting would be a shameful decision given the brilliant deputations given by all but 1 person (owner shopping centre) Click here to read http://bit.ly/2nddjO8

03.01.2022 Heads up.. the Council vote on tomorrow is pretty critical for the future of Unley ..if they vote in favor of 5 Storeys on the Village Green or more specifically Edmund Ave and Oxford terrace Does that mean 5 Storeys on any side streets across the Unley suburbs is on the cards - Hyde Park , Parkside , Goodwood .... ...?? Note - the Council will be voting on the development plan (DPA2) for the rest of the council area next .......... If you can please attend the meeting 7pm, 30/3 Unley Council chambers or contact your Councillors.... Unley Village Green - 5 storeys, no thanks , 9 storeys on Unley rd isn't acceptable either

01.01.2022 Look on your veranda, drive way or footpath for the latest edition of the Eastern Courier and the article written by Dan Jervis-bardy on the Unley Village Green.
