24.01.2022 Scientists don’t know exactly what is happening in the brain during a psychotic episode, however research suggests increased blood flow in the areas of the brain related to perception and processing information. . Circuits involved in judging reality become over active, and there is more blood flow in those areas. . There is also less activity in other areas of the brain such as the prefrontal cortex which may result in some of the negative symptoms.... . . #psychosis #neuroscience #schizophrenia #brainscience #delusions #hallucinations Image credit: SumaLateral Whole Brain Image by National Institutes of Health (NIH) is in the public domain.

20.01.2022 Have you ever noticed that listening to music (that you like) can make you more able to withstand physical or psychological pain? . One study showed that patients who were given calming music to listen to before surgery reported feeling calmer and less stressed than those who were given valium. . Music has immense therapeutic value. Professor David Levitin of McGill University thinks that this is because music mimics emotional life with its sorrows, pauses and highs.... . When you are feeling mad, sad, or bad listening to music that expresses the emotion in you can help you feel understood and that is where it’s therapeutic benefit comes from. . Furthermore, making or listening to music activates more parts of the brain than any other stimulant. . . #musictherapy #musicalanaesthetic #davidlevitin #emotionalvalidation #thepowerofmusic #painthreshold . 17.01.2022 I have read that our amygdalae shrink after the age of sixty, with a corresponding increase of a relaxed attitude towards life. . They also say that as we get older we tend to become more comfortable in our skin and with who we are. . I hope for the day when I think about a mistake I have made and instead of cringing, think to myself ‘pfft. What of it? So what?!’ And go on my merry way.... . If you are serious about finding that kind of freedom too, you might want to consider some schema therapy which can work on the punitive parent. . I need to remind myself when I cringe to shove that punitive part of myself into a box and crush it and chuck it to the kerb! . Then maybe I will live in the world with a light touch. . . #schematherapy #punitiveparent #amygdala #ushapedhappinesscurve #noregretsinlife #confidentwomen #ngvtriennial #ngvsculpture See more

09.01.2022 One thing to be wary of in any kind of recovery and even just in life, are ‘dead man goals’. . Don’t aim to achieve something that a dead man could do better than you. . .... #deadmansgoals #acceptanceandcommitmenttherapy #therapygoals #addictionrecovery #schizophrenia #activerecovery #jumshaw #humandetritus See more
