25.01.2022 Progress progress progress. A little update on the next lot of boxes. ( dice boxes...... or what ever item box) Ill post a more in depth post tomorrow on the progress as to where Im at and where Im heading. A few boxes will have spalted Merbeau veneer. Some sections have rot damage so I use a hardner which works a treat. ( handy tip from a friend ) @epic.furnitures cheers bro. I apply it after pressing/ after fine clean up skim on drum sander. The clean up skim is to ...remove any dry polyurethane that will act as an unwanted barrier for the hardner. 25.01.2022 Well peeps got some good news this morning. Saying my final good byes to Yosegi Keepsake box batch nos 12 and 17 as they are officially sold. Off to a repeat buyer from the USA. ... I now dont have any available yosegi keepsake boxes on me. 20.01.2022 Well Ladies and Gentleman the doors for the Studio Workshop are closed for the next 6 weeks due to Stage 4 covid19 restrictions. So all jobs in machining/ building progress are unfortantly put on pause. I dont fall under the suitable job permit and I dont want to risk it due to the insane fines. What does this mean? ... 18.01.2022 Up dates on the indoor planter pot stands . Progress is coming together smoothly. Ive just machined the rails and legs into their rough forms and Ill leave them stacked to settle for abit. Ive kept them in their sets to give effective grain and colour matching. Ive got 21 stands coming through in this batch. A few will slightly differ in dimensions due to unavoidable defects. ... 15.01.2022 Well Im back on the dice/ keep sake boxes this week. The side and end panels are all sanded to 120 grit through the drum sander and are ready to have their mitres cut. The gunk has been removed from the lid panels and they will be cut to final size before gluing edgings on once the boxes are assembled. The bases are sanded with 120 grit as well and are ready to be trimmed to final size. This will be done once the rebates are machine into the side/ end panels. 13.01.2022 Ahhhhh the joys of no power in the workshop once again thus needing to use a camper lamp as my main light source lol. ( no machining today ) But the show must gone on with these dice/keep sake boxes. I knew I should have put a sky light in when doing the revamp many moons ago. ... What im working on here is getting the proportions right for the lock wedges, latch and plating. Im planning on adding in some chaos veneer inlay at the ends of the plates. Ive mainly come to a decision of 2 differing sizes though this will most likely evolve. Very tiny lock wedges and latches. Luckily Ive done this size before so all the jigs are already made. A 2mm dia straight cutter is mainly used in my trim router for alot of these steps. (Upside down router table) Still alot of propotions to play around with and a more in-depth play around will take place once the boxes are fully constructed along with lids. This will require a few full scale prototype boxes. Still not happy with a lot of things. More in-depth videos and photos tomorrow when Im out of the dark ages . 10.01.2022 A long winded explanation for a relatively easy but long winded process . ( I say alot of ummmms. I need to improve on my lack of ummm usage) Another reason why layout drawings are important. Especially when making your own decorative veneer. A few changes to the doors instead of a full edging Ill be doing a stringy inlay boarder. Im using expensive materials here which gives reason for an inlay edging boarder. More processes but less Ebony and Wenge being used bu...t visually gives the same result from the front. The main factor that Im mentioning here is having the patch work veneer matching up once the panel is cut in half. (What you take out you must put back in) Theres 2 ways of doing this. Which I mention in the videos. Both sort of balance one another out in cost. It comes down to whats more important 1. Your time. Or 2. Less precious material being used. Ill go with no: 2 any day especially if its Ebony. I like to spend alot of time in the planning stage. More time committed to it gen creates more efficient processing and less stuff ups in the making stages. Still tons to do but getting there. 09.01.2022 Progress on the dice boxes (or what ever boxes ) It looks like a S#%* storm but alot of work has gone into these stages. Majority of the veneer is pressed to the side and end panel substrates for the 83 qty bix batch run. Ill need to machine more veneer as there isnt enough more so for the lid and base panels. Ill also need to machine up veneer for the internal base panel faces even though it gets lined with velvet suede. This can just be lower grade ash which I have h...eaps of. ( non pretty stuff) Im in the process to of machining the edgings for the boxes as well. Im almost at a comfortable stage where this project will hit a slow movement period. This gives me a chance to jump back into the planter pot stands. ( in between pressing veneers to base and lid substrates) Busy busy busy. 09.01.2022 Good bye yosegi box no: 2. Ill miss ya. I am so happy to have repeat buyers. Especially during times like this. Another box off to Queensland. Its going to be a very hard slog for artists and makers like my self during this time. Along with many other businesses. The main important thing is to stay positive and try and ride out the storm. It wont be like this for ever. Its going to be hard but there is light at the end of the tunnel. I think the main struggle is going... to be the aftermath. When the time comes take the opportunity to support others businesses especially the smaller ones. Not because you feel sorry for them but that you believe in them and you trust their product / service. Support by investing. This type of support is more sustainable and long term. And when u support them either through buying a coffee, commissioning a table, ordering a meal or purchasing a drawing. What ever it is. Congratulate them on their effort. Tell them you believe in them and their product. It honestly means alot. Take care everyone and keep safe. 08.01.2022 Last of the dice/ keep sake boxes are glued up. This project will go onto a temporary pause stage. Next is jumping back onto the planter pot stands and picture frames. The videos go into some more further thought process points on the boxes. Still playing around with certain elements so nothing is locked in yet. Ill be making roughly x6 fully functional prototypes to nut out what elements I like best. Every element will work its just what do I like best. So these prototypes... will also be up for sale along with the other x100 boxes when finished. The last videos Im talking about using hardner to strengthen some of the weak sections of wood in the Spalted Merbeau veneers. 08.01.2022 Progress on the Buddha statue decorative mini display box cabinet. Yes Im alive just busy. Ive jumped back into the decorative display box cabinet for my friend @mike.kbr to display his Buddha statue. Videos will explain where I am at in more detail. The original design I scrapped and decided to redesign the whole thing which I believe now will give the statue more justice. This piece is still heavily at planning stage but its starting to take shape. Some things wi...ll most likely be taken away or added. A full functioning prototype will be made before chewing into the real materials. So with the situation we are all in and most likely due to the lengthy recovery stage that is before us. Im going to start moving my efforts more towards commission and gallery batch work. I love markets (when ever they will come back) but I cant rely on them as heavily as I use to. I need to start moving my efforts into other directions. So x6 of these mini box cabinets will be made just out of different materials and will be heading to gallerys along with other pieces of mine (mostly yosegi boxes) when the timing is right. 06.01.2022 800 cut mitres later and we start to have a pile of parts looking like boxes. All mitres cut for the 100 dice / keep sake boxes. Unfortantly I cut one of them the wrong way so now I have x1 baby dice/ keep sake box. Next up is to machine the base panel housings and lid rebates. Unfortunately no workshop today. 06.01.2022 More progress on the next series of boxes. (Dice boxes. ...or what ever box) All edgings glued and trimmed for the side and end panels. Last of the veneer leafs cut and sanded for the lid and base panels. I just need to clean the veneer seams and glue together. As well Im cutting the veneer for the inside bases which will be covered with velvet suede. Some billets put aside as they had fig in them and too good to be just covered up by velvet suede. Put aside into my fig... timber stock pile ( which is heavily growing....... 04.01.2022 Progress on the planter pot stands. All legs and rails have been final dimensioned. Both rails and legs have the mortises machined in them. Ive also machined out the main bulk for the cross housing in the rails. Further clean up machining will take place next week. ( Im still in the process of making the router jig) Im also in the process of making the floating tennons from some iron bark. The tapering in the legs has hit a pause stage at the moment. Im going to buy s...ome pine and do a few test machine pieces before I hoof into the real thing. Im not happy with the original tapers since I think its too dramatic and they need to ease off. Ill do the round over on these to than address what design Ill go with. Alot of processes in a tiny piece. 03.01.2022 Nope im still alive just busy. The prototype boxes have caught up to the other boxes for the dice/keep sake box batch run. A few of these prototype boxes are slightly different in sizing to the others but wont matter when needing to work out proportions for handles, legs and lock latches/ wedges. These prototypes will still be up for sale when finished. So this brings the number of boxes up for sale to 109. Sadly not much workshop time over the last few weeks. My efforts h...ave been drawn towards my other part time job as well as back ground business stuff. ( in front of comp working out costings and emails ) Though finally my cutters came in for the planterpot stands so tomorrow Im jumping back onto that job. 02.01.2022 Up dates up dates up dates. Progress on the decorative Buddha statue box. Tech drawings( messy tech drawings) are done and same with cutting lists. Hey as long as I can understand them thats all that matters lol . A few features noted in the videos which include veneer book matching, magnetic keys, tiny storage compartments and more. I still need to make process step sheets, veneer matching drawings and part lists/ material purchase lists before I start any machining.... This is due to me making x6 others out of different materials x1 being a functional reference prototype. I tend to do a rough listing of the process steps in any piece. This roughly gives me a time frame of knowing when the project will be finished. Again this potentially nuts out any errors that may be there and also shows me what jigs/ templates Ill need to make. 01.01.2022 Stuff it, turn it up to level 100. Yep theres parts there for x100 qty dice/ keep sake boxes. May as well round it to the dearest 100 . Will look better when I have the laser engraved batch plarks for these and each one reading out of 100. ( these will sit on the bottom of the box) ... Well its time to start the job juggling game. Back onto the planter pot stands. A few joinery elements need to change. ( a few reasons more so long postage wait time on cutters due to pandemic, and apparently accessories for some power tools not available to australia.....yay) Shouldnt be a major issue though. Make do with what is available. First up is doing the final dress/ sand dimension to rails and legs than start working out placement of legs etc (grain arrangement) before joinery commences. Still some jigs to make for joinery though. 01.01.2022 Up dates on the dice/ keep sake boxes. Well it isnt 85 boxes now its 93....... (What am I doing.....) Extra boxes are made to use up left over veneer and to cover a few "running on fumes" mistakes. Nothing damaged just some sets matched incorrectly. Thus resulting to incorrect veneer lid and base numbers. Everything matches now I simply just made more work for my self hopefully results in more sales .......... Ive also decided on just going with lift... off lids. I found with the proportions the slid lid works better with a rectangle box compared to a square. Plus with a slid lid the boxes inside height decreases heaps. Why the large batch numbers? Im starting to move my directions towards more gallerys and slowly moving away from most of my heavy market movement. Soon Im back onto the planter pot stands. Once the final veneer pressing is done Im heavily jumping back into the stands.
