21.01.2022 This article is 3yrs old but the message hasn’t changed. Although retractable leads may seem convenient, they can be very dangerous. They also help your dog learn to pull when on lead which is one of the main things that dog owners struggle with. This article explains why I don’t recommend them. https://www.petfirst.com//the-dangers-of-retractable-leas/
19.01.2022 The dog control orders for the Barwon Coast have been updated. These orders control where you can and can’t walk your dog on and off-leash and are enforced by t...he City of Greater Geelong animal management team. PLEASE NOTE: UNTIL 31 DECEMBER the current dog control orders will remain in place. Please abide by the existing orders until January 1st. They can be found here bit.ly/dogcontrols FROM JANUARY 1st the updated dog control orders will come into force. New signage will be installed at beach accessways. 18.01.2022 These pups finished their Baby Puppy Classes at South Valley Veterinary Clinic last night! They’re gorgeous little lads . They worked a Course, consolidating what they have learned throughout the classes & then finished the night off with a fun Treasure Hunt game . I wish them all the best on their speedy journey to adulthood
16.01.2022 Does your dog enjoy a visit to a dog park and playing with all different types of dogs and high energy play? We know that all dogs are different (that's ...why we love them) while some love high energy play others just want to stay snuggled at home or enjoy a quiet walk Here is an easy way to identify if your dog is having fun and is comfortable at a dog park or if an alternative way to exercise may be more suitable for them. You will see these signs at all City of Charles Sturt Dog Parks, amazing artwork by Doggie Drawings by Lili Chin
14.01.2022 Well it’s certainly raining puppies now ! These sweet little guys started Baby Puppy class at South Valley Veterinary Clinic last night . The handlers of these little cherubs will be learning skills that will help them enormously when they’re out & about in the world of the distractions. Bringing your dog away from distractions is something that everyone finds difficult. I teach a super easy, hands free way to do that which will have their dogs willingly, spinning back to them in a flash .
13.01.2022 Life feels almost normal again being surrounded by puppies. These honeys had their 3rd Baby Puppy Class last night at South Valley Veterinary Clinic . Each of them growing at the super speed that puppies do. Harry our Border had a big day out prior to class & with the hot weather added in, he really didn’t feel like training by the time he got to class. And that’s ok! Just like us, our dogs can have those days/times where they just can’t give us what we ask for or expect. As much as we’d like them to work with us, we need to acknowledge & accept that sometimes the other member of our team just isn’t up for it. Wasn’t able to get a clear pic of our super social Golden Retriever because he was so happy to see me whenever I came by that he just couldn’t contain himself long enough .
11.01.2022 Another Private Lesson with Bobbie Beagle ! Her little friend was so eager to join the lesson & well, who could resist that face . So whilst Bobbie worked on her loose lead walking, I managed the clever little jumping Jack who very quickly worked out that sitting instead of jumping reaps much more awesome benefits . Coming back when called was equally awesome. She was a very happy Jack. Both did really well. Aaaah, it’s just too fun doing what I do .
09.01.2022 I had another lesson with this super sweet little Lab today . She’s very biddable & a quick learner. She’s going to be a lovely adult .

07.01.2022 Another Baby Puppy Class has begun at South Valley Veterinary Clinic ! Only 2 were able to make it tonight & so had the benefit of even more one on one time . In these classes I teach more than just the basics. I also teach skills that will help in managing those things that we most struggle with when out & about with our dog in the real world. For eg. How to teach your dog to willingly come away from distractions. How to use the lead in a productive way without need to pull & struggle with the dog. How to make yourself of value & build a strong connection/relationship with your dog. Very much looking forward to continuing the learning with these little darlings next week !
06.01.2022 Small dogs bark and lunge for the same reasons as large dogs do. It's not because they are small! It's because the world doesn't listen to them unless they shou...t. Here is an excerpt on small dogs from my book Making Dogs Happy. ************************************************************** In defense of small dogs Small dogs are often labeled as being overly bossy or having Napoleon syndrome or small dog syndrome because of their tendency to readily employ distance-increasing behaviors. These can include barking, lunging, rushing, growling, and snapping, as well as escape and avoidance (e.g. running away). Small dogs live in a world of giants. They are comparatively fragile, and even a friendly giant can hurt them if the play is too rough. Conversely, a small dog’s capacity to stand up for herself is limited by how far she can escalate matters. Kestrel, at 11 pounds (5 kg) will certainly stand up for herself, but if a 60 pound (30 kg) Labrador retriever like Bundy is galumphing over the top of her she may as well be a grasshopper standing up to an elephant. Even when small dogs are trying to move away, some large dogs (and many humans) approach to greet them. It is little wonder that many small dogs learn to switch to a more forceful strategy. When all the whispers, polite requests, and active attempts to avoid fail, but yelling sometimes works, then yelling will become the preferred option. Small dogs cannot be judged poorly for making that choice: Life is not so easy for them. Next time you encounter a small dog, take the time to think what might have influenced their behavior. Help them out by giving them the opportunity to be master of their own destiny and have a choice in how the interaction proceeds.
06.01.2022 And the puppies keep coming !!! These little guys started their Baby Puppy Class at South Valley Veterinary Clinic tonight ! It was still a little warm at class time & after the heat we’ve had today, all were hot dogs. Looking forward to seeing them again next week !
05.01.2022 Oh my heart !!! Private Lesson today with this adorable little pup & her lovely new family. Such a little sweetheart...sigh.. . It’s so important to start them off on the right foot. Looking forward to seeing her again soon .
05.01.2022 Lesson yesterday with this dear girl, a rescue who is settling into her new home . Her new family is committed to helping her with her fears of unknown people & dogs, so in our lesson they learned how to watch for & recognise shifts in her emotional state & how to manage & support her in those times. They also learned how to make themselves of value & build willing cooperation with her. The main aim is to build trust & to help her to feel safe .
03.01.2022 Puppy fun last night with these little guys at South Valley Veterinary Clinic Baby Pup Class ! Handlers learned how to use their lead productively & began teaching their dog to happily come away from distractions. Puppies started learning to walk nicely on lead & to recall. Finishing off with a problem solving game, I would think they slept very well
02.01.2022 Feeling spoilt to be able to spend so much time each week with so many puppies . Second class for these little ones at South Valley Veterinary Clinic last night !
02.01.2022 Another lesson with young Flo ! She’s certainly grown legs since our last lesson! Poor luv was still a bit tired after a big visit to the vet with a possible grass seed the day prior & napped through the first half of our lesson. But that was fine, because the lesson is really more for the human than the dog . I’m pleased to see how well Flo’s human has grasped the concept of the training I teach & the great job she’s doing with this little Lab .
01.01.2022 With the fire season upon us, it’s time to prepare an emergency plan for our pets. https://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/plan-prepare/pets-and-bushfires
