05.01.2022 As we emerge from the covid-19 pandemic and begin to think about recovery we have the opportunity to address two issues at once; decarbonise the economy and do ...it in a way that creates jobs. Economic recovery and cutting carbon emissions to zero by 2020 are Australia’s two greatest challenges and as such should be tackled together. Instead of responding to the calls of the Australian people for new investment in clean energy to cut greenhouse gas emissions the government appears to be moving in the opposite direction. The make-up of National Covid-19 Coordination Commission (NCCC) is proof of this. The panel of leaders charged with facilitating the fastest recovery possible has been packed full of people with ties to fossil fuel industries, gas in particular. Additionally, the man chosen, by the government, to head the panel is Nev Power, a major shareholder in oil and gas company Strike Energy. It is a failure of leadership to ignore that we need to push forward and away from fossil fuels and towards clean jobs that care for country, climate and communities. Our demands are: no public funds for gas and other damaging fossil fuel projects. Instead, recovery funds should be spent on: 1. Resourcing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led solutions that guarantee land rights and care for country 2. The creation of jobs that fast-track solutions to the climate crisis and help communities recover 3. Projects that transition our economy and communities to 100% renewable energy by 2030, through expanded public ownership.
