Not only known for his surfing and countless surfing trophies, Duke also won five olympic medals in swimming, was an actor appearing in 15 feature films, and was a Honolulu sheriff for 12 years. He was also a hero ... Duke and his surfing mates saved 12 lives in 1925 when ‘Thelma’, a 40ft yacht entering Newport Harbor, was smashed by massive waves. Survivors were pulled to safety by Duke and his mates who all braved the heavy seas on surfboards. Duke rescued 8 out of the 12.
