25.01.2022 Looking forward to chatting with Amanda Kendle at Thoughtful Travellers (as featured in the Washington Post) for their book club on 10 Jan, Facebook live. Feel free to join the party! :)
25.01.2022 I’m going fancy! Heading out on the Three Capes Track tomorrow and will be dining on some far more interesting food than I’m accustomed to, thanks to Three Capes Gear and Gourmet
24.01.2022 What a day to be traipsing around Mt Buffalo! Think I might head over to the Horn next (behind me)
23.01.2022 The new year is a time when many reassess their lives and make plans for the future. Be bold. Be brave. Live your life the way you want. Oh, and Happy New Year. x
22.01.2022 It’s been eight years since I was in Freycinet and I’d forgotten how beautiful it is. I hiked a 5 hour loop around Hazards Beach, across isthmus to the famous Wineglass Bay and up a million steps back to the starting point. Most stunning is the colour of the water and the pink granite of the mighty Hazards. #freycinetnp
21.01.2022 A tree hugger and proud of it! #charlottepass #kosciuszkonationalpark #snowymountainswalkingcompany
21.01.2022 Have you ever been terrorised by kangaroos before? I had quite a scary evening while camping on my own in the middle of the Carnarvon Great Walk. All was went until darkness hit. I went for a little pre-bedtime wee not far from my tent and not long after I got inside there was a what sounded like a number of aggravated roos bounding around. I could hear them thumping the ground and 'barking', then bounding heavily right past my tent. I could also hear them chewing the grass I...'d just watered. Eventually they calmed down and a few hours later I went out for another wee and the same thing happened - more barking, stomping, chewing. I can't imagine it was a territorial thing as surely they'd be used to hikers at this camp (albeit a rough camp with no facilities other than water pump). It was that special lady-time-of-the-month. Not sure if that revved them up? The thing is, it's not the first time this has happened to me. I was once squatting on the shores of Lake Jindabyne in NSW in the middle of a multi-day kayak and turned around to see three roos a few metres behind me, huffing and being all intimidating-like. Then they chewed the ground where I'd just gone. I ended up moving camp because they were so in my face. Do I have a special brand of wee or has anyone else also experienced this? Dr Chris Brown, any ideas? Signed... Traumatised
20.01.2022 My kind of TV. This is actually a real forest, as viewed through the frame of an old television on the Tasman peninsula, at Tasmanian Devil Unzoo
19.01.2022 There’s some interesting rock formations in the Loddon Valley region, near Bendigo. Scrambled around Melville Caves, Pyramid Hill and Terrick Terrick National Park today and had them all entirely to ourselves. #loddonvalley
19.01.2022 Day 3: Cape Pillar. Wow Australia’s highest sea cliffs at around 300metres, some hefty winds at times, a few whales and more wildflowers. Three Capes Track
18.01.2022 It’s hard to know where to start with today’s glorious hike up to Hartz Peak. Wildflowers, lakes and 360 degree mountain views A leisurely four hours for this one. It starts with fairly easy boardwalk and rocky trail before climbing steeply, finishing with a rocky scramble to the summit. There’s a few lakes en route which are just stunning and full of birdsong.
18.01.2022 Hello from the top of Mt Oakleigh!
17.01.2022 Help! How do you stop thieving birds from undoing the zips on your pack and stealing all your M&M's and nuts? What's your canny little trick? I'm heading to the Overland Track next week. There are loads of side trips where you leave your pack, but unattended gear draws the attention of crows who are notoriously for breaking and entering. I need to somehow be able to secure these two loops together on the trail. What do you use? Thanks
16.01.2022 Have you hiked in luxury before? I normally carry everything and eat fairly basic fare but this weekend on the Falls to Hotham Alpine Crossing was a whole new ballgame. I like the way Jean-Francois at Alpine Nature Experience rolls... While we hikers focussed on enjoying the trail, JF was busy transporting our gear, setting up suspended tents in the trees (to preserve the environment), and cooking delicious meals. It really enhanced the enjoyment of the hike big time with someone else doing all the hard yards. Especially when the trail itself called for quite big days.
15.01.2022 I am very excited to be a finalist in the Australian Society of Travel Writers annual awards - in the category of best adventure story - for my piece on paddling the Noosa River, written for Geographical UK. As a self taught writer who’s not been in the game all that long, I feel really honoured to be part of such an illustrious group of finalists. The winner will be announced in November (on my birthday ) The full story is here: https://soultrekkers.com.au//2020/05/P59-63-Noosa-River.pdf
15.01.2022 You know you've been hanging out for it...
14.01.2022 The good thing about cold weather on a six day hike is that your Brie stays good to the last day... yum
11.01.2022 Day four of the Three Capes Track and that’s a wrap. What a spectacular walk! Today had the most elevation to deal with - perfectly arranged for the last day when packs are light. The day’s highlight was Cape Huay where you’ll find the Totem Pole, a famous rock pillar favoured by rock climbers
10.01.2022 Day two on the Three Capes Walk. Today brought tonnes of beautiful wildflowers and some epic clifftop views. Timed it just right, getting into camp as it started raining.
09.01.2022 It’s sunny now but the forecast ain’t so good. Let’s just say it’s a good job this map is waterproof!
07.01.2022 My mum’s been buying Women’s Weekly since I was a little girl. Never imagined I’d one day be in it. And now to get on the cover... All I need to do is to become a movie star or marry a prince....hmm... #affirmpress #bewildered
06.01.2022 Day 1 of the Three Capes Track includes adventure of the non-walking kind, beginning with a tour around the penal settlement Port Arthur and then an awesome one hour boat cruise along the sea cliffs of the Tasman Peninsula. It was so calm today that our skipper was able to manoeuvre the boat inside a cave and between rock pillars which was pretty freaking cool. (Apparently it’s only possible about six times a year) Just a 4km walk to Surveyors Hut which looks like an airport hangar but much nicer. I’ve never been in such a fancy hut (deck chairs and yoga mats anyone?) and the sea view isn’t bad either.
05.01.2022 Have you walked the Tarn Shelf Circuit in Mt Field National Park, Tasmania? It’s pretty impressive but, though Parks describe it as a moderate walk, I’d say it’s a pretty energetic scramble at times and not all that straight forward to find your way amongst the rocks. Well worth doing though
04.01.2022 Great insights here on how snakebites work and what to do if you should get bitten.
02.01.2022 Mt Buffalo - who's been there? I don't know where to start. There are literally a few dozen trails there and even though I raced around 43km of them over a few days, I feel like I barely scratched the surface.
01.01.2022 Seriously, how do they do it?? This wombat poo looks like it was machine cut
