23.01.2022 ASRA 2019 Conference - Preliminary Program & Registration Now Open - https://mailchi.mp//asra-2019-conference-call-for-papers-e

23.01.2022 ASRA warmly welcomes Marie OConnell who is currently Team Leader Cultural Collections, the Archive of Mori and Pacific Sound (AMPS) at the University of Auckland and has held this position since February 2017. Marie trained as a sound preservation archivist at Radio New Zealand Sound Archives in Christchurch in 1994 where she developed her Isopropyl Drip machine in 1995 for problem analogue tapes http://richardhess.com//wet-playing-of-reel-tapes-with-lo/ In 2002 Mari...e moved to the United States to work for a consortium consisting the University of Southern Mississippi, the Mississippi Department of Archives and History and Tougaloo College where she worked on the Civil Rights era recordings held there. She also did consultation work in Mississippi to assist small libraries to work out preservation plans for their audio collections. In 2006 she moved to Los Angeles to take up the position of Chief Archivist at Cups n Strings in Santa Monica to run the restoration and preservation facility. In 2007, Marie took up a new position in hometown Christchurch, New Zealand, back at RNZ Sound Archive as Analogue Tape Specialist. Devastating earthquakes rocked Christchurch in 2010 and 2011 and the archive had to be relocated to a temporary location where Marie and colleagues reassembled the archive into a state better than before as they now knew everything they had in their collections. In 2012 the RNZ archive was merged with the NZ Film Archive which later became Ng Taonga Sound & Vision and who subsequently moved heritage out of Christchurch to its current location in Avalon. The AMPS collection holds about 14,000 carriers, including open reel tapes, cassettes, LPs and video cassettes that date back to 1909 to the present day. Each one provides unique insights into Mori and Pacific society and their diverse cultures and creative expressions through waiata, krero, histories, stories and song. Its purpose is to collect, protect and connect these unique taonga from iwi and Pacific neighbours. The commitment is to preserve & digitise as much as possible by Deadline 2025. Marie is on the technical committees of both IASA and ARSC.
