25.01.2022 Branch Into Music provides beautiful music programs tailored for early childhood development and education. Anne is running a free session at Delacombe Town Centre on the holidays - take your baby/toddler/preschooler along for some fun!

23.01.2022 I have been working with Hayley since the start of grade four, and today we had our final session together as she has finished grade six! We revisited some old favourite activities today, including the cup song. I usually use this song to target functional goals like attention, concentration, memory, or coordination, but when I watch this video, the qualities that really shine are persistence, relationship, and the joy of sharing music with another person.... Video shared with permission.

21.01.2022 Some great sing along books at Aldi this week!

20.01.2022 The music therapy team at Royal Melbourne Hospital have used the power of music to elicit an uplifting sense of unity in this amazing video.

18.01.2022 Every day I am gifted with the opportunity to witness something special about the students I work with. Strengths, achievements, and positive qualities can all be uncovered through music!

18.01.2022 A moment of pure joy and awe at the beauty of music

18.01.2022 During a video consultation today, a student asked if I could play guitar and we could sing together, like we used to at school. It was a shambles. The audio delay was terrible which threw out our timing, and there was no way we could musically connect or find any cohesion. But we tried, we laughed a lot, and the door was opened to an insightful and genuine conversation. ... That interaction made me reflect on the different perspectives that this challenging way of working has brought into focus. Whilst we can always look for ways to improve, and to learn from what went wrong, maybe we can allow ourselves to consider this: What if imperfect is OK? What if your best is absolutely good enough? What if we remember to find engagement, connection, and fun, in moments disguised as failures? What if we realise that, even if we feel we are not taking any steps forward, we are not stuck, but just stepping sideways, which can lead us in a whole new direction?

16.01.2022 Can you pick the tune??

16.01.2022 Today's intergenerational music group featured such classics as the Spooky Pokey, I'm A Little Pumpkin, and When The Ghosts Go Floating In!

13.01.2022 My lovely colleague, music teacher Kellie, and I had soooo much fun with our new toy today! I'm sure work wasn't meant to be this fun?! I'm so lucky to work with such a wonderful team of passionate and dedicated educators and support staff at Sebastopol Primary School, and to have so many opportunities to share joyous, meaningful, perfectly imperfect music with students, staff, and the school community.

12.01.2022 This young man used AAC (augmentative and alternative communication - in this case, an app that converts typing to speech) to compose song lyrics which his classmates brought to life for him. A lovely example of music breaking down communication barriers and building connections with peers, as well as providing a platform for self expression and creativity.

12.01.2022 My colleague Michelle from Chorus Music Therapy Clinic answers our most frequently asked question in under a minute!

11.01.2022 In my intergenerational music therapy program, I incorporate many activities to facilitate respectful and mutually comfortable physical touch, and the benefits can be profound, as Mel from Butterfly Garden Family Day Care reflects. From a high five greeting to hand clapping songs like Pat A Cake; from sharing instruments to playing together with feathers; touch can be incorporated in small ways that go far in alleviating loneliness and isolation in our elderly group members.

11.01.2022 I'm adding to my toolkit today at a joint initiative between headspace and DEECD, aimed at educating schools to better recognise and support mental health issues in students. This training is free for DEECD employees and there are many more sessions being offered all around Victoria over the next six months - Google SAFEMinds for details.

08.01.2022 This morning I'm checking in with some of my clients and creating resources from my "home office" in our small house. I asked my five year old what would help him to remember not to come in, and he said "a red dot, because red means stop, with words written in black texta, and the words have to say..." then asked me to write this verbatim, including the heart. I don't know what's going on outside my office door but it appears to involve throwing Ooshies into a bucket

07.01.2022 Following Don't Stop The Music on ABC TV last year, 7000 instruments have been donated to students across Australia! At the mainstream primary school I work at, our music teacher was inspired by this program to build more instrumental playing into the music program, and I have been fortunate to support the grade 5/6 class she trialled it with. Thanks to an enormous amount of leg work by that passionate music teacher, some loans and donations, and a lot of creative resourcing..., we are sending our grade sixes off to high school with a solid understanding of notation, confidence on a number of instruments, and a good attitude towards music education. Therapeutically, this is significant because it builds the students' capacity and likelihood to engage in music at high school, which can lead to greater engagement with school on the whole, healthy peer relationships, improved educational outcomes, and further development of skills that can carry through to adulthood. What a privilege we have to work in a school that values music so highly! #dontstopthemusic

06.01.2022 This beautifully written post by a family day care educator who brings children to my intergenerational music group sums up the impact of the program on both the children and the elderly residents who attend.

06.01.2022 A music resource from The Wiggles to explain social distancing to young children

06.01.2022 In the three days a week I work, I am on staff in two organisations, contracted to a third, subcontract to another RMT, and see clients under NDIS. The biggest challenge of my work is remembering which name tag and keys to take on which days

05.01.2022 My brain is full after attending a music therapy trauma symposium yesterday it was very interesting to hear about different approaches both in Australia and other countries around the world. As always after attending high quality professional learning, I left with the sense that "the more you know, the more you know you don't know"! However, reflecting on the day, the themes that are emerging for me give more thought to are:... * what it means to provide safety for clients * considerations for the physical therapy space * mindfulness of context and environment in relation to client experience. I'm grateful to Ballarat Specialist School and Sebastopol Primary School for supporting me to attend this event.

05.01.2022 To all the wonderful Speech Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Allied Health Assistants, Social Workers, Psychologists, and fellow Music Therapists I have the privilege of working with and learning from - thank you!

02.01.2022 I spent some time today in my "recording studio" I've been trialling BandLab to collaborate with one of my clients. I recorded a backing track and if all goes to plan, he should be able to record a vocal over the top, and so on.

02.01.2022 I have worked closely with many wonderful Speech Pathologists in my various roles in special education and private practice, and have learned so much about non verbal communication, AAC (augmentative and alternative communication), visual aids and much more from those excellent practitioners.

01.01.2022 I'm very excited to be partnering with Playgroup Victoria to launch their latest pilot program - an online intergenerational playgroup! Intergenerational work has many therapeutic benefits for the participants - meaningful interactions, strengthened community relationships, reminiscence, uplifting experiences, social and emotional growth - the list goes on! Plus it's so much fun
