25.01.2022 Learning from home idea - look up at the sky! If you’re in Oz it’s probably too late now, but In the next 6 hours there will be an awesome meteor display. But if you miss it in the real (2am-5am in the NE Sky- oh mamma!) find it online. Draw. Write. Chat. This is a teachable moment. ... https://www.google.com.au//eta-aquariid-meteor-shower-2020

23.01.2022 I want to share a different kind of post today. Partly because I haven’t heard of any specific needs you guys have, and partly because my spidey sense says our next conversations (in Oz) need to be about how to phase back into face to face situations. No joke, you will need to prep yourself and your kids for this. You might remember reading a story sometime of a person who was extremely thirsty or malnourished being rescued, and the desire to shove every morsel of food and w...ater into their mouths straight away. But this would overwhelm their system and actually do more harm than good most times, so measured food and water is the way. That’s the sort of conversations we need to be having right now. How are you going to start seeing people again? How will you feel on the first anxious hug (which may not be the first post COVID hug just the first anxious one)? Which things DONT you want to give up which you have gained in this time? How might people have become what you consider weird in this time and what will help you be kind and patient as you transition back? So I might begin a few of these conversations over the next week and see where they go. Sleep well everyone. (Ps if you’re not sure what the pic means- it is from the Narnia series. The idea of stepping into a whole new world, or even back into your own world after being in Narnia seemed to be an appropriate metaphor here)

22.01.2022 So.....school kicks off Wednesday in NSW, and I am really happy to keep adding to your feed with learning from home ideas. Not because you are hopeless, by the way, but because you (like every teacher) want some ideas outside your own head. This is called resourceful not plagiarism. So which areas of home learning would you like ideas for? Hit me up! #wearingmanyhats #lifelonglearners #homeschool

14.01.2022 Learning from home #?- A Monday special for the Pre school or early Primary school. I have written these songs for every letter of the alphabet. Rr is a fun one with actions you can make up. To do as a learning activity- brainstorm all the words you can, then listen to the song and add any more you hear or think of. Write on a whiteboard, paper, or anywhere which works for you. If you are making an ongoing list- choose paper. Here’s a picture courtesy of my clever friend Luka which you are allowed to use for your brainstorming if you like. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Und4GJjV1g0

14.01.2022 Learning at home idea #08 (I think!) - COVID19 diary I know this sounds a bit morbid, but it’s still a good idea. We can’t imagine ever forgetting what this time is like. And yet we will, and even moreso your kids will. They will forget what their days were like, what school lunches became, what a school day was like. Give 10-15mins to a diary this week where they will write about how COVID has affected their day to day lives. Maybe how they felt, but more about what they ac...tually did in these days. Add an illustration if you want...but home teachers beware- kids who don’t want to write will use the illustration thing as a block if they can. Write first then draw. If you have taken on board the earlier idea I shared of daily 5, this will fit perfectly.

13.01.2022 Learning from home idea #10 - write it in flour A lot of things kids need to learn are about practice and repetition. They are not difficult but they just need practice. Times tables are one of these. But sometimes some creative innovation make the practice more fun. Here’s a fun way to practice tables: write them on the table into flour. And- because you will ask- how do you reset the flour each time. I have put in the pictures how we did it and it was a fun part for Sambo. Sweep it into a bit of paper then reset it using a sieve.

13.01.2022 Learning from home idea #12 (the last before holidays) - make a creative holiday map, and other ideas. This holidays more than any other, you will need to make a mark in the sand to know it is holiday time. Given that you will not be going on that camping trip, or cruise, or...anything, life could seem just the same. So here are some ideas, in order of their excellence in my opinion (these are all things to do as part of your school day by the way): #01 - Make a holiday "map...." If you are friends with our friend Amy King you would have seen her beautiful arty holiday brainstorms. We have done similar ones, or there's the one below that Sami did one holidays! Or you could just put ideas in a jar and then pull them out each day. #02 - Work hard so you are finished by lunchtime. #03 - wear your school uniform tomorrow, so you know the feeling of getting out of school clothes and into holiday clothes. Happy holidays everyone!

08.01.2022 Learning froM home idea # 15- pavement chalking sharing someone else’s idea. This is my friend Belinda Wooz Lakelin and her pavement chalking challenges. She’s a chalking ninja so start small and make some people around you happy as well as express some creative learning

08.01.2022 So....I kinda flagged the idea that I’d share some thoughts on conversations worth having before we normalise whatever that means. Haven’t quite got there yet! But here’s one worth talking about with kids and adults in your house: Not everyone will want to hug everyone when this thing is over. I think this will actually be worth thinking through and talking through. You will clearly be so ready to hug some people, but there will also be some physical contact moments which will be weird, and you won’t know what to do. So think of some gracious and clear phrases you could use to make your own boundaries. Or if you are one of the people who wants to hug the whole world as soon as you can....please remember you are just one of the people among many different people.

08.01.2022 So it’s school back on tomorrow for a whole lot of Aussies. How are you feeling about that? I suspect there are many answers. Relieved? Worried? Curious? And equally important- how are your kids feeling? Getting ahead on conversations worth having ahead of time, here is one for this week. Do you know what your expectations are for this week? Because no matter what anyone is saying, we don’t know how this week in schools are going to look. Schools are working so hard to make... it work and I really take my hat off to the school workers who are doing this. But no one knows what it’s really gonna be like. You’re not gonna sleep well this week if you decide to make 7 plans for the 7 possible outcomes you predict. But you can talk with your kids about what their expectations are for class, friends, play, teachers, social distance, lunchboxes (Yep that’s a biggie for a wholeLot of us!) and all that. Try to talk about what your expectations are, and how to roll along when things don’t go your way. Not if, but when. Relax, be kind to yourselves and each other and I hope and pray this week is a good one.

05.01.2022 Learning from home idea #018329? - don't waste a spontaneous learning moment Just to take the idea of the meteor shower a step further, here is a learning from home thought. In case you don't know my context, I am a parent, pastor, muso, but specifically relevant here, a Primary School teacher for over 20 years. All that said, here's the thought: don't waste a learning moment. You may feel torn left and right with the demands of learning from home, your own over confidence or... under confidence, lack of time working two jobs (or more). I do get it. But you also may not ever ever ever get an opportunity like this with your kids in their schooling lives again. So once in a while, drop the writing a story and share a story from your own lives, or family stories round a fire. Teach one of your kids something they can't learn in a classroom - let them drive it but also give them guidance. It may only be a 30 minute time in a whole week, but it will be worth it. And as a teacher, I want to for my part give you permission to add this to your learning time. It's not better than the school stuff, or worse, but it is usually something we just cannot learn in the school environs. Here's one we have done: plaster of paris. So messy but so fun!

05.01.2022 Teaching from home idea #08 - relax and play to your strengths. So I’m guessing most of you have come through at least some of these stages in learning at home: 1: AAAAARGHHH (melts down either quietly or very not quietly)... 2: I never signed up for this, I have no idea 3: oh wait, maybe I do have some ideas 4: I’m actually not too bad at this teaching thing....maybe even better than a teacher (sticks it to the man either quietly or not so quietly) 5: is it recess yet? And the truth is, most if not all teachers in school feel this sometimes. You are not the worst, or best thing since educational sliced bread. But you are you, and there are strengths you will bring to this process. So relax and play to your strengths. Still do the work set, or do your best to do the work set. But relax when it looks different to what it is meant to look like. Accept and use the strengths of your own school teachers, and add your own. For me, this is adding a creative spontaneous flair to the day. We are planning to play Bocce at recess, which is a thing we can only do at home, and I can do spontaneous and creative. Your strength might be reading: go find a kids story like Funny Kid, Narnia, Anh Do, Pages and Co....and just read a section with your kids every day. Your strength might be science. Plan an experiment, then write and photograph it. Play to your strengths. And relax- it will be a bit of a marathon, but it will pass, and then soon enough you will be making cheese sandwiches for lunchboxes again and wishing for the days when you could make 2 minute noodles for lunch around the table with your kids. (Ps I have no idea if this book is worth reading- so I am not recommending or unrecommending it. Just liked the pic)

05.01.2022 In accordance with the season, I am thinking I may do an in ISO version of Footy on the TV and put it on my YouTube space. What id love is some photos of adults and kids with their footy colours on- the team you play for or the team you support. I think it’d be a bit of fun and also give some encouragement to our sports organisers of the place they hold in our hearts! If you’ve never heard the song- do yourself a favour now https://youtu.be/JFoj4E0PZks. Then PM me a pic of you in your colours, or shouting at a re-run of a footy game.

01.01.2022 Learning from home idea #12 - Read your kids The Easter Story Regardless of your personal beliefs, it is important to connect kids to the origin of an event. So I have never felt worried about sharing the actual story of Easter at school. You could read it from a Bible, or a storybook or comic. One which Has turns of phrase I really love is called the Jesus StoryBook Bible. ... Among other things, reading to your kids is just an amazing thing to do. There are studies that show kids of all ages (not just under 7 year olds) love being read to. You will find that you achieve some seriously good educational, relational and other mileage out of reading to your kids. And this week, this story is the shoe that fits. You may prefer to do the Jesus alive story rather than the Jesus execution story- your call on that one, but I included the link to the resurrection/new life one here. https://youtu.be/Ur3PZoQEGGk
