24.01.2022 Researchers at Scope, a disability service in Victoria, are testing a survey that explores the impact that services or supports have on children/ young people (aged 0-14 years) with disability. The researchers are inviting carers of children/ young people (0-14 years of age) with disability across Australia to help them test the survey. Taking part involves carers completing the survey online, which takes about 10 to 15 minutes. For more information and to complete the survey, click this link https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/scopechildoutcomes. If you would like to talk to someone about the research, please contact Caroline Hart on 0437 840 684 or email [email protected]

21.01.2022 Not being able to use a disability parking bay means we may not have anywhere safe to park for my son to get out of the van, and he’d have to navigate a busy car park in his power wheelchair, in a space not designed for his chair and moving cars to pass each other.

17.01.2022 I don’t mind if people stare at me, I personally like it when they ask me questions about me if they are staring at me. I feel this will help breakdown barriers about the differences between all of us. In his own words, this is how Riley, who has cerebral palsy, feels about being stared at by people. He’d love to know how you feel, so have a read of the latest article he wrote for us and leave your thoughts below.

07.01.2022 What a brilliant initiative from our brand ambassador Fin for Disability Week at his school! Check out his photos and update below "I really wanted to do something special for Disability Week at my school. This week usually goes by with out any recognition and I wanted to start a tradition at my school of celebrating and acknowledging Disability Week. ... So what could I do? I came up with the idea of having teachers and students in wheelchairs for a day. I thought this would be a fun way to raise awareness for people with disabilities. Spending a day in a wheelchair would be very challenging but it would hopefully help to create understanding, empathy and kindness in the people who experience it. I took my idea to my case worker at the school, Jackie, and asked her if she could help me. She was amazing and jumped on board with great enthusiasm. We enlisted the help of the school physio, Anita who approached the Suncoast Spinners to see if we could borrow their wheelchairs. The Suncoast Spinners loaned us their chairs but because the chair are sports wheelchair that don’t fit through doors. My initial idea was to have students and teachers in chairs for the day and get sponsored so we could raise money and awareness but we couldn’t make that happen this year. Instead there were wheelchair sports played at lunch time and all of the teachers and principles got involved. Channel 7 local news even came to the school and did a story on it. Our HPE teacher, Brent used the chairs for his basket ball program this year. He said that the students have really enjoyed it and that he had received feed back from the students and parents saying it was the best thing they had ever done in HPE. I really hope that this experience has given people a greater appreciation of the challenges that people with a disability face every day. Next year I would like to raise money to hire regular wheelchairs and get the sponsorship happening. I hope this is something that grows bigger each year and that Disability Week starts to get more recognition in my school. I would love this to be an ongoing event that continues even after I have graduated. Fin"
