11.01.2022 FIVE YEAR PARENT VISAS INTRODUCED We have been waiting for this for a long time. The Minister for Immigration has been talking about this visa for the last two years and finally on Friday 1 March, it became a reality. We have many clients who have not been eligible for parent visas and who now have the right to live in Australia with their Australian children and grandchildren, even though they are not eligible for parent visas.... We are very pleased to announce that with effect from 17 April 2019, applications will be open to sponsor a parent for the temporary parent visa. Here is a list of some of the requirements. Sponsors will be required to meet eligibility requirements including but not limited to the following: Australian citizens or permanent residents, who have been resident in Australia for four years Aged over 18 Meet a minimum household income threshold In addition, sponsors will be required to meet obligations including: Providing financial support and accommodation Keeping records of income Keeping the Department of Home Affairs advised of any circumstantial changes Once a sponsorship application has been approved, parents (including biological, adoptive or step) will have a pathway to apply for a sponsored parent (temporary) visa. Visa applications will be open from 01 July 2019. This will enable parents to temporarily reunite with their children and grandchildren in Australia for periods of up to 5 years at a time without the need to depart and without meeting the ‘Balance of Family’ test. A second temporary parent visa may be applied for if the parent is outside Australia for a minimum of 90 days before lodgement of the second application. Visa Applicants will be required to meet the following basic criteria Sponsorship by an approved sponsor Be outside Australia when the application is lodged Provide evidence of health insurance Sponsorship and Visa Application Costs The sponsorship fee payable to the Department of Home Affairs is $420 The visa application fee payable to the Department of Home Affairs is $5,000 for a period of up to 3 years. $10,000 for a visa of up to 5 years duration.
