20.01.2022 Allied health considered essential services during COVID-19 Breaking news from Federal Health Minister, the Hon Greg Hunt, in light of some states shutting down ‘non-essential services’, the Minister has confirmed that ALL allied health businesses nationally can continue working and are encouraged to do so. The Minister has also indicated that the Department of Health is now developing full allied health telehealth options, along with other health and medical services, within the week. This will be part of a staged plan and he encourages providers to continue vital face-to-face services where possible. More information to follow when details are known.

20.01.2022 The SASHC team would like to wish everyone a very happy, healthy and safe Christmas.

12.01.2022 During this time of unprecedented community concern, the health and wellbeing of our clients and staff remains our top priority. SASHC is closely monitoring the latest information and advice from health authorities regarding COVID-19 (Coronavirus) and are adopting all recommended pro-active minimisation measures. To that end we have made some changes to how we operate to ensure we can continue to provide you, our clients, with a high level of service, as and when you need us.... Audiology & Speech Pathology Please be assured our Audiology & Speech Pathology services remain open. Strict infection control measures and work practices in line with current recommendations from Audiology Australia & Speech Pathology Australia have always been a critical part of SASHC’s service delivery. Given the evolving COVID-19 situation, we have introduced the following additional measures for staff and people visiting the centre: Staff adherence to all Federal Department of Health guidelines in relation to illness, overseas travel, personal hygiene and self-quarantine measures. Anyone who has recently returned from overseas or has had contact with a COVID-19 case and needs to self-isolate will have to defer appointments for a 2-week period on their return to Australia. Anyone attending the centre will need to apply hand sanitizer which will be conveniently located on the counter. Additional infection control reinforcement and enhancement in our Audiology booth and therapy rooms between every client. Social distancing is being encouraged in the centre.. Increased cleaning of key areas within the centre including all stations that involve client interaction. We’d also recommend, where possible, that payments are made using ‘tap and pay’ or credit card to reduce cash handling and minimise any transmission risk. Additional information For the latest updates and information about Coronavirus, please visit the Federal Health Department website. SASHC is here for you when you need us and will continue to provide updates as needed through our website and Facebook

09.01.2022 Speech vs language As much as the terms are used interchangeably by many, speech and language are actually two different aspects of communication. Speech is the way a person makes the sounds of speech. It is referred to as articulation, and involves the movement of the tongue, lips, and jaw and management of breath to produce sounds accurately. Toddlers often have speech/articulation difficulties as they are learning to say new words, such as the cute little girl in the video... below. However, some children continue to have trouble saying words and sounds clearly and this is when they are deemed to have speech delays. Language is the understanding and use of words to communicate with others. The understanding of language is receptive language and the use of words to communicate is expressive language. Children can have difficulty with either receptive or expressive or both together. Those who have receptive language difficulties may not be able to answer various question forms of be able to follow concepts. Children with expressive language difficulties will have difficult expressing themselves. They may be unable to say how they feel or explain something that had happened to them. Children can have difficulties in either speech or language, or both at the same time. If you have any concerns for your child’s development, or are just unsure if what they’re doing is appropriate for their age, book a consultation with one of our friendly speech pathologists! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pc-Qq6Aaf3Q
