15.01.2022 The Australian Queen Bee Breeders Association would like to alert beekeepers to the penalties that can be incured by the attempted illegal importation of beegoo...ds and live queenbees into Australia. The beekeeping industry is in a unique position of being one of the few places in the world that does not have varroa mites and as most of the beekeeping industry commercial and amateur would be aware and I am sure everybody would like to keep it that way, in saying this we are distressed to see a advertisement which is offering queenbees from a country that is on the prohibited list put out by the Department of Agriculture for queen bees being allowed to be shown on Backyard Beekeepers Australia's face book site.. It is not only varroa which is the threat but the viruses it carries and spreads are of great concern, the Africanised gene that could be introduced would make an enjoyable hobby an unviable one for many amateur beekeepers . Keeping bees within the suburbs would become far too dangerous for the average backyard and the threat to the general public who currently see beekeeping as a asset to the country might see it as something to be shunned and private property sites would become a rarity. The AQBBA is currently working on importing live queenbees into Australia and members have begun trials at the new quarantine facility in Mickleham Vic. If varroa does reach Australia we will have any genetic advantage that is available to us. As all Australians know our entire country is in a wonderful position that we are isolated from lots of the worlds problems and nobody would like to see varroa here by an individuals greed. See more

10.01.2022 The USC Honey Lab Team, Drs. Trong Tran (https://www.usc.edu.au/staff-repository/dr-trong-d-tran) and Peter Brooks (https://www.usc.edu.au/staff-repository/dr-peter-brooks), are running a propolis study to investigate the diversity of the Australian honey bee propolis and their values. With the aim to explore the values of Australian honey bee propolis (bee glue) to bring a supplementary income stream for beekeepers in a future, the Honey lab in the Universit...y of the Sunshine Coast (USC) (https://www.facebook.com/USCHoneyLab/) have been running a short survey into the quality, diversity and antioxidant activity of Australian honey bee propolis. We would like to ask beekeepers to donate about 10 g of propolis samples with details in the sample submission form. Beekeepers will receive a report of propolis percentage, total phenolic content and antioxidant activity for free in return. All beekeeper and location data will be kept confidential to USC. Should you wish to send your propolis for testing, please send them before end of June 2020. Thanks in advance.

07.01.2022 Queen Breeding Training. Another skill learnt and put into practice from the recent 'Rearing Queens' training organised by the South Australian Apiarists Association. Queen Banking. ... A common practice for large beekeeping businesses but new for me. So ten queens in JZ BZ queen cages without attendant worker bees in a frame in a queenless nuc. The Queen Bank is a queenless six-frame nuc which has a lot of young worker bees. It is well fed with a pollen pattie and sugar syrup. #SAAA #queenbee #bees #beekeepers #southaustralia #Apiarist #pirsa #tocalcollege

06.01.2022 TOTAL FIRE BANS have been declared for 19 March 2020 in the following Fire Ban Districts: Eastern Eyre Peninsula - Severe Mid North - Severe Mount Lofty Ranges ...- Extreme Yorke Peninsula - Severe Riverland - Severe Murraylands - Severe Upper South East - Severe Lower South East - Severe Where Total Fire Bans have been declared, very hazardous fire weather conditions are predicted. The Total Fire Ban will apply for 24 hours from midnight tonight to midnight tomorrow. The CFS recommends that you implement your Bushfire Survival Plan. FIRE DANGER RATING Where fire ban districts have a forecast fire danger rating of Extreme, only well prepared, well constructed and actively defended houses are likely to offer safety during a fire. Where fire ban districts have a forecast fire danger rating of Severe, well prepared and actively defended houses can offer safety during a fire. If you don't have a plan to ensure your survival, leaving early before a fire starts is your safest option. In making your plan, you should be aware that in high fire danger conditions, essential services including mains-fed electricity and water supply may not be available due to the prevailing weather conditions. Landowners are asked to adhere to local harvest codes of practice which are available from your local council. Landowners are also asked to ensure that any burn-off activities conducted today are fully extinguished before midnight tonight. Agencies are advised to activate their Total Fire Ban procedures in preparation for these predicted fire weather conditions.
