25.01.2022 You may remember Raine and Potter, the tough-as-nails couple mustering cattle in the NT outback. They featured in a Landline story earlier this year about infe...rtility in the bush. They let us into their lives to share their struggle to conceive, facing the challenges of distance, stigma, and remote healthcare. They've just shared some wonderful news. A few days ago, they welcomed little Hallie into the world. Raine wrote: "We are absolutely smitten with our girl who has been in our dreams for 4 years and on this IVF roller coaster." Congratulations! Watch their story: https://ab.co/3eW7H6u

24.01.2022 Tempting Tuesday: Thank you to Caroline Lower (Adelaide Branch) who shared this recipe for Magic Lemon Cake last night on SACWA Recipe of the Week with Peter Go...ers on #ABCRadioAdelaide. The secret of the cake is due to the baking process. In order to make the magic happen, you need to slow bake the cake, ideally for about 50 minutes at 160 C. The batter must be quite liquid, and you should still be able to see some small bits of egg whites floating on top (only small bits, the rest must be quite well incorporated). See more

23.01.2022 On #WorldAIDSDay, we stand in solidarity with all those living with or affected by HIV and remember the people we have lost. We continue to support those spread...ing awareness about the disease and fighting the stigma that it carries. The WI was one of the first UK organisations to talk about HIV and AIDS following its 1986 resolution ‘to inform the general public of the true facts concerning the disease AIDS’ and used its unrivalled network of local organisations to educate the public and get people talking about the issue. WI members campaigned to debunk the myth that HIV/AIDS wasn’t a women’s issue. The NFWI teamed up with The Terrence Higgins Trust to produce the leaflet ‘Women and AIDS’. Throughout the following years, WI members participated in the Government’s awareness raising campaign and challenged prejudiced media representations of HIV/AIDS.

22.01.2022 Did you buy a marmalade kit from our trading table on Saturday? We'd love to see some photos of your marmalade! Feel free to add them in the comments below. ...Branch member Allison Reynolds is a Culinary Historian and marmalade enthusiast supporting the @australianmarmaladeawards. She thought the trading table was a great opportunity to encourage others to have a go at their own marmalade and put together these kits to help people get started. They proved to be very popular! Let us know how your cooking went! See more

18.01.2022 Day Four of Stocking Stuffers: one of the State Handicraft Committee’s crafts of 2020 was Bargello Embroidery. Bargello is a type of needlepoint embroidery consisting of upright flat stitches laid in a mathematical pattern to create motifs. What a wonderful present this would make for a maths teacher or to brighten up your bathroom on Christmas Day, your visitors will be impressed. Only nine more days left to get into the Pop Up Shop before we close.

15.01.2022 In 2009 Brilish artist Kirstie Macleod, with seed capital from the British Council, embarked upon a global embroidery project called the Red Dress Project. Betw...een 2009 and 2019 the dress travelled the globe being continuously embroidered by over 120 artisans. The embroiderers include refugees in Palestine, victims of civil war in Kosovo, Rwanda and DR Congo, individuals in South Africa, Kenya, Japan, Paris, Sweden and Peru, upmarket studios in Bombay and Saudi Arabia, artists in Wales and Colombia alongside initiatives to support women in poverty such as Missibaba in Cape Town, South Africa, and FanSina working with Bedouin embroiderers based in the mountains above St Catherine's in Egypt's Sinai. This is both an extraordinary work of collective art and profound and eloquent social commentary. It is also an example of how potent the Attire language is capable of becoming. See more

15.01.2022 Throwback Thursday: When you are planning your visit to the SACWA Pop Up Shop in the Adelaide Arcade make sure you leave yourself enough time to discover the history of the Arcade. The Adelaide Arcade was opened in 1885 and was hailed as the most modern shopping precinct in the Southern Hemisphere. Did you know that over its three century lifespan, Adelaide Arcade has been home to many interesting tenants - one of the most exotic was the Turkish Baths, where you had your choi...ce of warm baths for a shilling or Turkish baths for four shillings. Beneath the main floor was an underground chamber where patrons could enjoy refreshments. While the entrance was closed for many years, the tea rooms are now visible through a glass floor that has been built over the original ironwork staircase. Take a full virtual tour on the #adelaidearcade website, and learn more about the history of our gorgeous arcade https://adelaidearcade.com.au/history #adelaidearcade #rundlemall #cityofadelaide See more

15.01.2022 Throwback Thursday: the idea of Branch banners was launched in 1950 with a competition for banner designs. #cwaalicesprings won with an Aboriginal weapons motif. This was followed by a competition for completed banners which was incorporated in the 1953 Handicraft Exhibition. A great deal of creative imagination went into banner design, Campbelltown's banner celebrated their celery industry. News article courtesy of #Trove (trove.nla.org.au) Pinnaroo and Border Times November 1950. We have an amazing array of banners at State Office which we hope to have on a rotating display in the near future.

A simple knitted project this week, I know it is getting warm out there, but knitted or crocheted slippers make a great gift, or a welcome item on your stalls and markets. 05.01.2022 Welcome to this week's Corona Craft brought to you by the SACWA State Handicraft Committee. Thank you to Maureen for this week's craft, Notepad Cover. It has a number of themes that we have had over the last few weeks. It can be used on your stalls or markets, as a Kris Kringle or small Christmas gift, and has the added benefit of using recycled materials. Win Win! The size of the notepad cover, of course depends on your notepad! The following instructions have a notepad that... is about 10cm x 14.5cm, available from your local 'Cheap Shop'. You can make your notepad cover from recycled cards, scrapbooking paper or card, or even left over wall paper! If using scrapbooking paper, you will need some thin card between the layers of paper, to make the cover stiff. You will also need: 2ply cotton yarn or DMC no. 5 perle cotton 1.5mm crochet hook Punch or awl to make the holes, a standard paper punch has 1/4"holes, and this may be too big. Try a celluloid punch, leather punch or tailor's awl Cut 2 pieces of paper or card for the outside of your notebook cover, 3cm longer and wider than your pad. Cut 2 pieces of paper or card for the inside of your notebook cover, 3cm longer and wider than your pad. Cut 2 additional pieces of card if using paper for the outside and inside of your notepad cover. Cut 1 piece of card 5cm x width of your notebook cover, this is to hold the notepad to the back cover. Layer the Front paper/card, Inner thin card (if using) and Inside paper/card. Hold the 3 layers together with small bulldog clips, paper clips or quilters clips. Punch holes evenly around the edge of the cover thru all 3 layers at the same time. Layer the Back paper/card, Inner thin card (if using) and Inside paper/card. Add the 5cm strip to the inside back cover about 3cm down from the top of the back cover. Hold the 4 layers together with small bulldog clips, paper clips or quilters clips. Crochet around the edge of the front cover using 3 double crochet in each hole along the sides, in each corner: 3 double crochet, 2 chain, 3 double crochet. Repeat for back cover. To join the front and back covers, crochet 1 row of treble crochet at the top of back and front pieces, join using a whip stitch. Weave in ends. Add your notepad! The SACWA Handicraft Shop is open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 11am to 3pm. All are welcome. We stock card making supplies, 1.5mm crochet hooks and the DMC no. 5 perle cotton.

03.01.2022 Women from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities may be more susceptible to particular forms of abuse like forced marriage or female genital mutilation (...FGM).They are likely to face additional barriers to receiving the help they need and stay longer in those abusive relationships due to the barriers associated with leaving. Specialist frontline services for BAME communities and migrant women are also few and far between. The ‘no recourse to public funds’ rule can also be a major barrier for migrant women trying to escape abuse and access support. We need a system that is fair and equal for all survivors of domestic abuse. 01.01.2022 It was so lovely to have the opportunity to represent the SACWA at the #ABCRadioAdelaide studios this morning as the inaugural ABC Legend in the Baking blue ribbon winner (and breakfast newsreader) Paul McCarthy was farewelled. We sent him on his way with the Calendar of Cakes cookbook, to broaden his repertoire.
