03.01.2022 I (Bobbie, SAWLIS President) tried to explain the notion captured in this meme to our dear Minister Gardner on Monday at the EdSA association get-together. When I told him that my association (SA Wellbeing Leaders in Schools) were distressed that wellbeing had been taken off all site improvement plans, he had the gall to say: "Every child needs literacy and numeracy but not all of them need well-being." My response? "With all due respect Minister, ALL students require wellb...eing!" He became ruffled and told me this was not the time nor place to discuss the matter. It is well and good to upgrade our curriculum and pedagogy to become 'world class' but this has little impact on those with chronic absenteeism or those without an effective learner disposition - perhaps due to trauma, abuse, neglect, parental mental illness or substance misuse, or poor emotional regulation. No Minister. Literacy and numeracy ARE NOT more important than wellbeing!
