18.01.2022 Today marks the start of Sexual Violence Awareness Month. This year’s theme ‘We believe you’ is inspired by the ‘Start by Believing’ global campaign, transform...ing the way we respond to people who have experienced sexual violence. Believing survivors of sexual violence can make a big difference in helping them to recover and heal from their experience. 17.01.2022 For SVAM 2019, QSAN has worked with artist and activist, Liberal Jane, to create a series of images inspiring community members to supportively respond to disclosures of sexual violence. The second image in the series, Believe Survivors means putting your trust, faith and confidence in survivors. The theme of SVAM 2019 is ‘We Believe You’. 1 in 5 women experience sexual violence in their lifetime, however, these experiences are vastly underreported. ‘We believe you’ addres...ses a pervasive cultural attitude in not believing survivors when they disclose their experience of sexual violence. Many survivors have attempted to find justice through reporting and have not been believed. Many women choose not to report or disclose to friends and family due to unhelpful messages from their communities, friends and family, the police and the justice system. Messages include minimising their experience and the trauma they might have sustained and victim blaming - indicating that they might be somehow to blame for a crime committed against them. We know that sexual assault occurs within the context of power, intimidation, coercion and violence - and therefore a survivor’s response and act of resistance in that moment is to just survive - even if that meant acting 'passive'. Together we can transform the way we respond to disclosures, work towards changing the narrative and foster a safer community. Together we can call out the institutions that silence and dismiss survivors. It starts by believing and it starts with you. Responder tips: It can be extremely difficult for survivors to come forward and share their story. They may feel ashamed, fear they won’t be believed, or worried they may be blamed. Leave any ‘why’ questions out your job is to support this person. Be careful not to interpret calmness or a lack of visible distress as a sign that the event did not occur. Everyone responds to traumatic events differently. The best thing you can do is believe them. You can say things like: I believe you. It took a lot of courage to tell me about this. It’s not your fault. You didn’t do anything to deserve this. #listenbelievesupport #QSAN #SVAM2019 #webelieveyou #believingstartswithyou #StartByBelieving #StartByBelievingAustralia Liberal Jane is a US-based illustrator, feminist and reproductive justice activist. 17.01.2022 Due to new restrictions and the uncertainty going forward we will not be having Reclaim the Night this year after all. Watch this space for a virtual event or something a little creative.
16.01.2022 BRISSC Community Art Show - Call for Submissions (second round) BRISSC would like to invite women survivors, allies and activists and people who like to ma...ke art to put in their expressions of interest to participate and/or exhibit in our community art exhibition. Our aim is to hold a space voice for women whose words are sometimes lost in translation. We encourage all women including those from diverse and Indigenous communities to share their experience of resistance and liberation from personal and sociological experiences of sexual violence. This will be showcased in an online art exhibition and possibly a physical art show depending on COVID restrictions. In the lead up to the art show, BRISSC will host art workshops and online tutorials over 8 weeks to support submissions. These workshops will be facilitated by a range of specialised arts workers. The art practices & techniques explored within the workshops will be decided collaboratively by participants. Participants may choose to take part in the workshops that interest them, work independently if they prefer, or to submit original work they have created previously. To register your interest and receive an information package please email Milena: [email protected] *If you have previously applied there is no need to resubmit
15.01.2022 Don't forget the "What were you wearing" installation that we will have on display at Reclaim the Night. Here is a series of posters that you might see popping up around town in the next few days. The What you were wearing exhibit is a collection of re-created stories from sexual assault survivors told through displays of clothing and brief statements from victims. The purpose of the exhibit is to erase the myth that certain clothing is responsible for sexual violence. Th...e belief that clothing or what someone was wearing causes rape is extremely damaging for both survivors and for our community. This exhibit allows the community to see themselves reflected in not only the outfits, but also in the experiences of the survivors. When people recognise the displayed clothing as similar to something they own or wear on a daily basis, it very much challenges their perceptions and helps remove the element of blame that somehow an outfit can cause someone to commit sexual violence. Thank you to Cara for your hard work on these posters and your patience while we collected stories from survivors here in the South Burnett. You can see Cara's work here: https://www.facebook.com/CRB-Graphic-Designer-Visual-Artist-101215151296183/ Thank you to Stanwell for your support in having these posters developed and printed for Sexual Violence Awareness Month. Your support has meant we can really focus on raising awareness in our local South Burnett area.
15.01.2022 Studies have indicated that only 2% of all reported rapes are false, which is slightly less than false reporting in all other crimes. This SVAM, stand with and believe survivors. #listenbelievesupport #QSAN #SVAM2019 #webelieveyou #believingstartswithyou
14.01.2022 Yesterday in Parliament we passed a new law about child sex offences. There were a number of parts to it, but it included making it a criminal offence to fail... to report sexual abuse of a child, and also to fail to protect a child from sexual abuse. It will mean that even disclosures someone might make in a religious confession about abusing a child - are no longer out of bounds. If you're a paedophile, there should be nowhere to hide. To those who've been sexually abused as children - some of them too many years ago, and most of whom never had a voice - this is for you. #protectourkids #givechildrenavoice
12.01.2022 (earlier this evening) Promoting Sexual Violence Awareness, Centacare facilitated two Stop Motion Animation workshops for survivors and the general community where the participants animations were projected on to the peanut silos of PCA earlier this evening on 25th November 2020, which also coincides with the launch of "16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence". Torkit Business Solutions co-facilitated the workshops and worked with the... participants in choosing their music and rendering their animations into separate videos, adding in a few special effects, and the videos were later collated and added into one bigger production for the silo projection. A big thank you to PCA for all of their support in enabling this projection to appear on their silos over the next few days. This was a Queensland Government Funded project Thank you to everyone for your support with this project. #sexualviolenceawareness #sexualviolenceawareness2020 #16daysofactivism2020 #torkitbusiness #centacare #pca South Burnett Arts Burnett Today southburnett.com.au #southburnett
11.01.2022 As we draw closer to Reclaim the Night, we have produced a video highlighting some local stories and the ongoing impacts that Sexual Violence has on individuals lives. Viewer discretion is advised, and if you feel upset or concerned as a result of viewing this video, please do not hesitate in contacting us, so that we may point you in the direction of appropriate support.
10.01.2022 Today is denim day. Today we wear denim with a purpose, to support survivors, and educate themselves and others about all forms of sexual violence. The campaign began after a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court where a rape conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans she must have helped the person who raped her remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. Please South Burnett wear your denim today and send us some photos!!!
