19.01.2022 MASKS ON FARMS From 11:59pm on Sunday face masks will become mandatory for all Victorians when out of their homes. Premier Daniel Andrews has this afternoon ...clarified when masks need to be worn for those who live on farms. The premier called for a common-sense approach, and gave a number of situational examples of when a mask is required. Essentially: If you’re working alone on your farm and not coming into contact with other people, a mask IS NOT needed. If you’re working on your farm with people who live in the same house as you, a mask IS NOT needed. If you’re working on your farm alongside people who do not live in the same house as you, a mask IS REQUIRED. If it’s a family farm and you and members of your household, then common sense tells you that you don’t need to wear a mask, Mr Andrews said. But once you go past the front gate and go into town you would (need to wear a mask). If you’ve got staff or if you’ve got people coming to your property to make deliveries or to collect livestock for instance or if you have staff coming onto your property logic just says put your mask on because that person is not part of your household. Even though the farm is your home, that’s then a workplace.

03.01.2022 It’s Threatened Species Day a day for us to reflect on our species at risk of extinction and to consider what we need to do to protect our unique plants and a...nimals into the future. That’s why I’m really pleased that, on this day, the Australian Government has announced its commitment to develop a new ten-year Threatened Species Strategy to protect Australia’s threatened species. Our native species face significant challenges with many threats working together to drive decline, including invasive pests and weeds, habitat loss and fragmentation, as well as climate change and disasters, such as the 2019-20 bushfires. The new Strategy will deliver practical on-ground action and the development of new tools and technologies to help address these pressures and build the resilience of our threatened species. The new Strategy will build on the model of the current Strategy. The Strategy will include a ten-year vision to 2030 and it will be underpinned by five-year Action Plans which will establish targets, steps and timelines. Launched in 2015, the current Strategy was Australia’s first nationwide Threatened Species Strategy. It was new, bold and ambitious. It included explicit and measurable targets to tackle feral cats, improve recovery practices and improve the trajectories of 20 mammals, 20 birds and 30 plants by 2020 (you can read more about how we’re tracking against those targets here: https://www.environment.gov.au//threatened-species-strateg). The targets in the current Strategy conclude this year, and my team is working on a final report which will present a robust and evidence-based analysis of progress against these targets. Threatened Species Day is also about reflecting on collective efforts around Australia to help protect and recover our threatened species, including by conservation organisations, researchers and the community right across Australia to help protect our precious native wildlife. The resilience, dedication and expertise of these groups and individuals is remarkable. The development of the new Strategy will be informed by consultation with individuals and organisations across the country. Starting in October, I look forward to hearing about what you would like to see in a new Threatened Species Strategy. 01.01.2022 Echidna breeding season has started! ------------------------------------------- This will be the only time of the year (June-September) that you will see more... than one echidna together out in the wild. Echidnas form these 'trains' where one female is followed by multiple males until she chooses one to mate with - these trains can last for weeks at a time! Have you seen one? An easy citizen science project that really helps research on these awesome mammals, is to log sightings of Echidna with the free EchidnaCSI app. Last year 17 citizen scientist submitted sightings of Echidnas in the Mallee CMA region. Lets try and beat that and get to 20 sightings. Visit the Echidna CSI website for more info: buff.ly/2YSmbPW
