07.01.2022 WHY January 26 is not a day to celebrate. For many, January 26 represents a celebration of the values and freedoms we are afforded in Australia. For some it’s a celebration of gaining citizenship, for others, a reaffirmation of national pride. But for this land’s First Nations people, January 26 is a day of mourning. Long before white British settlers arrived in Australia in 1788, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people lived in established societies. They were practicin...g engineering, advanced architecture, complicated agricultural practices, and were operating under detailed laws and customs. For our First Nations people, January 26 symbolises the violent colonisation that catalysed the ongoing oppression of this ancient culture. It marks the beginning of the enslavement, invalidation, oppression, and silencing of Australia’s First Nations people. It marks the beginning of the destruction of land that was protected and cultivated for 60,000 years. In the words of Nakkiah Lui, a prominent Indigenous comedian: "We mourn the declaration of Australia as terra nullius (land that belongs to no one) as well as those who have died in massacres, those who were dispossessed of their land and homes, those were denied their humanity, those who were shackled, beaten, sent to prison camps, and made to live in reserves" Changing the date of Australia day will not fix the long list of issues facing First Nations people today. Indigenous people still have the highest incarceration rates of any group, indigenous children still have the highest likelihood of being removed from their families. Every day, sacred land is bulldozed, drilled into, and extracted from. Changing the date will not account for hundreds of years of indignity forced upon First Nations people. But what it will do, is move our society towards a more compassionate understanding of our shared history. January 26 is not a day to celebrate. See more
