25.01.2022 GROOMER GUIDANCE Transformation Tuesday for Ollie! Ollie is a big boy with a lot of love - and hair! - to give. His mum brings him in regularly but with l...ockdown, he ended up in a bit of a state. Truth be told, many large double coated dog breeds end up in this predicament and it’s sometimes not an easy thing to rectify. Owners are often left wondering why their dogs grooms are so expensive compared to other dogs and why they may not be able to get the appointments they want. So let’s break it down - - Early Dog gets the Worm Most larger breed dogs will be asked by groomers to come in for a morning appointment. This is because the time that they require can often be unpredictable. Sometimes we can’t tell how easy or difficult it will be to remove the dead coat until we REALLY get in there. If we end up running behind on your dog, we can usually make up time later in the day without inconveniencing other customers - Wash and wear Most of the larger double coated breeds tend to be very active and get in some pretty dirty situations! This means that their owners like to try and keep them clean in between by washing their dogs themselves. We’re all for great dog care but unfortunately, sometimes the dogs aren’t dried as well as they need to be. Knots and debris that are already in the coat, swell with water, mix with shampoo and dead skin that often isn’t rinsed properly, and tighten right up causing coat compaction and tight matting close to the skin that isn’t necessarily seen on first glance. This kind of coat doesn’t simply blow out but requires extensive manual labour to remove. - Which brush? This brush Many large double coated dog owners ask us what the correct brush for their dog is, unfortunately the answer is that there’s about 5! We use multiple pieces of equipment and specific techniques on these dogs, most of them involve using high speed dryers or equipment that can be dangerous if used by someone inexperienced with it. Alternatively, some buy brushes that are inappropriate for the dogs coat or use said brushes in an incorrect manner, cutting and snapping the dogs hair, making it more prone to tangling. - Who are you? Many of these large double coated dogs are of spitz decent or livestock guardian descent (eg Malamutes, German Shepherds, Akita, Border Collies). These breeds are known for their primitive and protective nature, and it’s safe to say, they don’t appreciate a stranger poking around in their under bits to remove knots! Their prey drive can cause them to nip and chase dryers, and that stubborn independent streak means in some cases they will not submit to being groomed without a heated discussion! This can often lead to both accidents for both groomer and dog in the salon, so extra care needs to be taken. - Time is Money These large double coated dogs can take anywhere between 2 and 8 hours to complete to a professional standard. This means ensuring they are dry, there are no knots and the appropriate amount of undercoat is removed. They cannot simply be shaved as this creates further havoc with the hair growth cycle and skin. Most groomers can complete 1 small dog in roughly an hour. This means, if one of these large double coated dogs arrives in questionable condition and takes approximately 4 hours to complete to a satisfactory standard, that is the equivalent to 4 small dogs. Say for example, a groomer charges $75 for a small dog, then in order to justify that larger dogs groom, they would need to charge $300. In order to avoid this predicament, we recommend that large double coated dogs come in no longer than 5 weeks apart. If they exceed this time - the cost will go up to compensate the groomer for the allocation of time. This is why many small, independent places will close their books to large dogs as they do not have the staff base to complete them in a time and cost efficient manner. If in doubt, call your groomer and discuss your dog’s individual needs!
