22.01.2022 CHICKEN STRIPS EXPLAINED - but this time seriously! On one picture below you can see funny images of chicken on the wall of an motorcycle tyre, to explain what ...term "chicken strips" represents. On the other tyre image you can see that is very little of it left - to the border of the tyre. Expression "chicken strips" is imported from USA and it is widely used to describe riders who "chicken out" when leaning. In Australia, most common expression for that is "your kickstand leans your bike more than you do, mate". That is how entire series of memes and posts have started circulating in motorcycle groups and social media. Unfortunately, many riders have taken at very often out of the context, building an unjustified judgmental opinion and downgrading approach towards other fellow motorbike riders. Hence, I intend to debunk it in this post. Therefore, let's observe two very important factors: 1 - LEANING ANGLE OF A MOTORCYCLE IN THE CORNERS depends FIRSTLY on manufacturer design of motorcycle ridden (Super Sport, Sport, Sport Tourer, Tourer/Cruiser, Adventure, Dirt bike - to name the few types), which means that motorbikes of DIFFERENT DESIGNS travelling at the same speed, in the same corner, ridden by the same rider WILL LEAN IN THAT CORNER UNDER DIFFERENT ANGLE. 2 - LEANING ANGLE PERMISSIBLE BY MOTORCYCLE TYRE DESIGN. Same as the motorcycles, tires have also many different types visible to a naked eye - round, square, grooved, rough, bold (slick racing tyre). As only tiny little section of both tyres (front and rear) touches the ground and IT IS YOUR ONLY CONNECTION TO THE GROUND WHEN YOU RIDE, it is VERY SERIOUS MATTER to put tires designed for your MOTORCYCLE TYPE, TYRE SIZE, PURPOSE AND AIR PRESSURE. (*Proper tyre for motorcycles are very serious topic and is not discussed here). These two reasons should be enough to debunk all those mysteries about "chicken strips". FOR THOSE WHO DON'T KNOW - narrow "chicken strips" are not sign of fast speeds either, as the same narrow "chicken strips" could be achieved by safe and slow speeds in the suburbs, or even better in some empty parking lots PRACTISING SLOW MANOEUVRES OR GYMKHANA. PRACTICE CONTROLLING OF YOUR MOTORCYCLE OFTEN. THAT IS THE KEY OF YOUR SUCCESS, WHICH WILL REWARD YOU WITH MANY YEARS OF RIDING PLEASURE. Reasoning behind is very simple - you must FEEL your motorcycle and become one with it, regardless of what type motorcycle you ride at the time given, as you will change many of them through your riding years, if you practice properly. Those who have experience and ride big motorcycles know that there is TIPPING POINT on every motorcycle after which FALL or DROPPING motorcycle is inevitable. Therefore, it is no wonder that FIRST LESSON I have taught my three grandsons (12, 11, and 10 years old) was about BALANCE. I asked them to hold my 320 kg motorcycle UPRIGHT, by holding it with both hands on the sissy bar... At first, they were frightened, but they have all done it with no problems at all. I was just a bystander at the ready - to prevent the drop should they panic. Certainly, I have told them, if they are feeling like losing control, they should use all of their strength to push motorbike onto kickstand side, to prevent fall. Second lesson and demonstration was about connection between centrifugal and centripetal forces, which prevent water from spilling in the bucket, they were swinging in a circle above their heads. So please, practice, practice, practice and RIDE TO YOUR ABILITIES. Don't let no one look down at you or your motorcycle. We all ride on two wheels and we all can die doing it - whether through our own or someone else's mistake, scared wild animals or unforeseen circumstances on the road ahead, even if we are very close to home. Take care. Stay safe. Stay upright.
