24.01.2022 I hosted a special lunch for a group of Tasmanian Vietnam veterans at Parliament today. The Vietnam War lasted more than a decade and was longer than either wor...ld war. More than 60,000 Australians served, including 2323 Tasmanian born soldiers. Sadly, 521 Australians, including 16 Tasmanians made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. I was pleased to also present the group with a copy of a motion I moved in Parliament this week, honouring the service and sacrifice of our Vietnam Veterans. The motion can be read at http://www.guybarnett.com.au//22_August_-_2018_-_Vietnam_V See more

21.01.2022 So what is with the RSL? Many of us are members of respective sub-branches yet at State and National levels even under one - two star ranked Presidents, the org...anisation appears to be a complete cluster. More recently even the Tas President has resigned mid-term for unknown reasons. Unsure why - but note we have been told it's not because of financial issues. So 102 years after it was established- what the bloody hell is wrong with this organisation? At the national level the Federal Police are involved and NSW and indeed South Aust State Branches have had major issues. Queensland are going through an ACNC probe following an FBT liability of over $300K. Victoria hasn't been meeting the governance standards either. Is the RSL relevant any longer? Or is it’s day as the premier ESO done and dusted? Why did our own (as in veterans) allow the State branches to go this way? After 102 years it’s clear the RSL is finished as the premier ex-service organisation and those members involved at every level in bringing it down should hang their heads in shame. It related to egos and a lack of accountability even across the Canberra based two star club. In one State branch as the walls collapsed, the OAM’s flowed for those who thought they were actually worth it. Shameful and it’s time that we as younger veterans stood up, took over and called these poor performers to account. Stay with your sub-branches and ensure those at the State and National levels are called to account. This crap has to stop - now. Welcome to Saturday night.

19.01.2022 ANZAC DAY 25 April 2020 As may would be aware this year RSL Tasmania along with other State RSL's decided to cancel ANZAC Day Services and this has been supported by our State Government. South Arm RSL Sub-Branch acknowledges this decision and will not hold formal or informal services.... We do however intend that wreaths will be laid at the Cenotaph and the Wall of Remembrance. This will happen and flags will be flown at half mast. The person to lay the wreaths will do so, discretely, and in their own time. I would encourage you all to follow our State Government and RSL Tasmania's suggestions and commemorate ANZAC Day in "different ways" as detailed below and available on the ANZAC Day 2020 leaflet which I understand was delivered to each household. 25 APRIL 2020 5.30am Australian War Memorial Commemorative Service ABC TV, ABC Radio, Facebook and iview This year, the Australian War Memorial in Canberra will hold a private, nationally televised Anzac Day commemorative service. The traditional Dawn Service, National Ceremony and veterans’ march will not take place. Across the Nation, Australians are being invited to honour the service of our Defence Forces, past and present, by standing at their front door or on their balcony at 6.00am and observing a minute’s silence. 11.30am RSL Tasmania Commemorative Service ABC Radio In a special event, RSL Tasmania and the Tasmanian Government will hold a private service. The event will not be open to the public but we invite you to join in the live broadcast via ABC’s Facebook page and local radio. 19.01.2022 This morning, the WW11 Memorial panels were installed in the South Arm Memorial Park. Each panel, ( one for the Navy, Army and RAAF) displays photographs and statistics from Australia’s involvement in Europe & The Mediterranean and South East Asia & the Pacific area during WW11. Each panel looks amazing and is full of interesting facts. The South Arm RSL Sub-Branch committee are proud to be able to provide such a wonderful Memorial Park for all community members. We take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank the Tasmanian State Government for their on-going support towards the development of this Memorial Park.

11.01.2022 Check out this truly beautiful version of Bohemian Rhapsody by the Whangarei Kapa Haka group that was performed last Thursday at New Zealand's national kapa haka festival, Te Matatini. Watch the video here: http://bit.ly/tereoMaoriborhap

11.01.2022 When the big push came on there, the guns started at 10 o’clock at night, and they all went bang, Wade said. That’s a lot of guns, and a lot of noise, I can ...tell you You didn’t have time to get frightened. You just did what you had to do automatically. John Wade turns 100 in November, but he remembers the sound of 1,000 guns going off at the start of the Second Battle of El Alamein as if it was yesterday. John’s story is the first in a series of articles recording veteran’s memories of El Alamein. Discover his story: http://bit.ly/2zNpGHi

09.01.2022 The Charge of the Australian Light Horse at Beersheba on 31 October 1917 is considered the last great calvary charge in history by many. This famous battle help...ed changed the course of the war in the Middle East. To commemorate the centenary of this historic event, join the Tasmanian Lighthorse, supported by her Excellency the Governor, myself as event patron, the City of Hobart, RSL Tasmania, Australian Army Band Tasmania, Macquarie Point Development Corporation and Hobart Legacy at the Hobart Cenotaph at 4:15pm, Tuesday, 31 October 2017. 07.01.2022 I had the honour of delivering my First Speech to the Senate this evening. I ended my speech with the following words: Napoleon said that if you want to learn ...a nation’s interests, go to the graves of its soldiers. Many Australian dead have been brought back to Australia, but many still lie close to where they fell. Australia’s interests lie across the face of the earth as we are an international nation with world-wide interests. I have visited many battlefields and made a small contribution on some. What strikes me is the consistent performance of Australian soldiers, sailors and airmen over more than 100 years, and around the world. Today’s soldiers are as good if not better than any we have ever sent overseas, and much of that is due to our Australian culture, and the leadership, training and equipment that accompanies them. To me, they represent everything that is good about Australia - because they are Australia. Mr President, I dedicate my effort in this house to them.

01.01.2022 We may not have been there but our spirits were. "Lest We Forget"
