15.01.2022 Bertie Piper's real name was Terence Hildebert Piper, died from Typhoid Fever on January 10, 1904 aged 12. He is buried in the Ipswich General Cemetery, and kno...wn by most. In 2001 a group of vandals destroyed part of the statue in one of the most horrible acts an individual or group could do. On the 15th of May 2010, The Managing Director of Ghost Tours Pty Ltd Jack Sim and the Ipswich City Council through the Heritage Consultative Committee ,funded to have the badly vandalized statue of Bertie restored. The Queensland Times wrote an article about the restoration and interviewed Jack Sim who said: Bertie’s statue has rightfully been regarded as one of the finest graves and memorials in Australia, Mr Sims said. His passing shattered the Piper family, who had lost another soon at a young age, and so with their church and local community erected this beautiful statue. The destruction of the memorial in 2001 was a senseless act of vandalism, so thankfully with the council’s help we’re able to put Bertie back up where he should be.
