20.01.2022 The Normanby Rangers are proud to be hosting Hope Vale Campus, Cape York Aboriginal Australian Academy students this week out on country!

14.01.2022 SCYC had a great time hosting three Grade 10 Work Experience students from Cooktown State School last week. Arthur, Saiah, and Shannille got to spend some time with different SCYC staff and the Melsonby Rangers, and got a taste of some of the different areas we work in. From a mangrove survey in the river to searching for the weed salvinia at the top of Mount Poverty, they had a fantastic experience and, from all accounts, really enjoyed themselves! Thanks to the students for their hard work in the field!

12.01.2022 Jason and the CALM Trainee team went on an awesome trip this week, supporting Traditional Owners, QPWS and Border Force to do a patrol and a massive beach clean-up in Cape Melville National Park! They removed a full trailer load of rubbish from Ninian Bay and Cape Melville, and got to learn about compliance with Rob from QPWS. The team was also joined by volunteers all the way from Noosa and District Landcare. A massive thank you to Rob from Cooktown QPWS for inviting the team along, what an experience for our school-based Trainees on their school holidays!

11.01.2022 CATCHMENT CHAMPION AWARD A few years ago, we started recognising an annual 'Catchment Champion', to highlight the efforts of people or groups that go above and beyond for our local environment. Our inaugural award in 2018 went to Alan Wilson of Laura, for his very many years dedicated to reducing Queensland's littering problem with a container refund scheme. ... Last year, it was awarded to local water scientist Christina Howley, for her unwavering dedication to Cape York rivers and waterways, including creating a whole partnership to monitor water quality. We are now calling for nominations for our 2020 Catchment Champion! If you know of someone who deserves this award, please send us an email - [email protected] Or send us a message here on Facebook.

04.01.2022 Great news & reason to celebrate ahead of NAIDOC Week 2020, which is kicking off on Sunday! #countryneedspeople #alwayswasalwayswillbe

03.01.2022 Our Great Barrier Reef is under pressure from climate change, but also from poorly managed catchment runoff churning sediment into coastal reefs. Normanby Stat...ion manager and ranger, Vince Harrigan, has installed these fences to keep feral horses and cattle away from waterways. This helps to prevent further erosion of the gullies and streams and really helps improve the water quality. What does this have to do with the reef? Well, the now cleaner water from the Normanby River eventually flows out to the Great Barrier Reef cleaner water means less algae and stronger corals. The work of the Normanby rangers benefits all Queenslanders. The problem is, there are only two of them and there is a huge amount of country to manage. In fact, the other bloke helping is Vince’s brother Dylan, he’s volunteering his time and lending a hand. Imagine the good they could do for country if there were even more Normanby rangers! Sign this petition here to your local Qld candidate that you want to see more rangers caring for country. https://www.countryneedspeople.org.au/rangers_for_queensland Photo credit. Kerry Trapnell
