25.01.2022 183 Push-Ups today building to a big day on Thursday (232 Push Ups) !!! Better prepare well and get some good nutrition in now - also a clever way of getting kids to eat their fruit/veggies !!! The experience of psychological distress and mental ill health is higher amongst socioeconomically disadvantaged Australians. People living in areas of the greatest socioeconomic disadvantage are twice as likely to be experiencing psychological distress compared to those in high soc...ioeconomic areas. (18.3% vs 9%). Some factors contributing to this inequality include financial distress, housing insecurity, higher rates of physical ill health, poorer access to mental health services, and greater exposure to crime, incarceration, and violence. Mental ill health can also contribute to socioeconomic disadvantage by making it more difficult to obtain and continue work. Around 25% of Australians who report having a mental health condition have experienced homelessness. #pushupfun #21ways2pushup #mentalhealth See more

25.01.2022 Practice Managing Machine - Sue Dobie - showing she is both creative and clever in helping us get to today's tally of 125 Push-Ups !!! 4 more days to go for the challenge !!! [watch video - sound on] The glycaemic index is a value assigned to foods based on how slowly or how quickly those foods cause increases in blood sugar levels. Researchers have discovered that the low GI foods, which give us more stable blood sugar levels, can be useful for moderating our moods. In one e...xample of a trial investigating the link between diet and mood, participants who stuck to a low-GI diet, with a glycaemic load of less than 125 per day, reported lower mood disturbance, fewer depressive-type symptoms, and lower levels of fatigue. Some examples of low-GI foods include sweet potatoes, multigrain bread, and basmati rice. #21ways2pushup #pushupfun #mentalhealth See more

24.01.2022 The Team getting today's total of 155 Push-Ups done in a variety of ways !!! Ella Bracone is a knowlegeable and caring Physiotherapist with amazing skills in Hands-On treatment, Hydrotherapy and Clinical Exercise/Pilates to assist her patients. We are lucky to have both Ella and one of the best Hydrotherapy Pools at our Clinic in Murdoch for patients and the public to use for rehabilitation and therapy. Today's Push-Up goal relates to an estimated 15.5% of young LGBTIQA+ Australians who have made a non-fatal suicide attempt at some point in their lives. Among trans people, that number rises to almost 50%. By this measure, the LGBTIQA+ population is the most over-represented group in the country. #pushupfun #21ways2pushup #mentalhealthpushup

21.01.2022 A salute from leading Physiotherapist Tim Barnwell - to all 250,000+ participants in this years "Push-Up Challenge" - raising awareness of Mental Health. 169 repetitions today completes the week (rest day Sunday) pppphhhheeeewwwww but 2 more weeks of Push-Ups still to go !!! The effects of mental ill health are especially felt by our First Nations people. In our country suicide rates remain disproportionately high for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. In 2018, suicide was the leading cause of death for both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous children, accounting for more than a quarter (26.5%) of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander child deaths. In 2018, there were 169 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders who died by suicide. #pushupfun #21ways2pushup #mentalhealth

20.01.2022 A busy Physiotherapy Practice greatly values the role and support of the Administration Team !!! One of the clinics smiling receptionists - Tamara - helping get todays total of 147 Push-Ups done !!! Australian adolescents are not getting enough sleep on school nights, averaging 6.5-7.5 hours instead of the recommended 8-9. Survey results indicate that up to 66% of adolescents are experiencing symptoms of sleep disturbance, and rates of insomnia are very high in this age gro...up. Not enough sleep can dull our positive emotions and make it more difficult to regulate our negative emotions. Poor sleep in adolescence can convey a higher risk of developing depression later in life. As well as putting down the electronics, some other suggestions to improve sleep include getting exercise during the day, drinking caffeine before lunch only, getting some sunlight every day, making sure the sleeping environment is dark and cool, having a set bedtime and getting up the same time every day. #pushupfun #21ways2pushup #mentalhealth See more

18.01.2022 And we cracked out 201 Push-ups today !!! Those Pecs (Pectoral Muscles) were burning !!! Some very interesting statisics about Mental Health to read ...... At any one moment, approximately 20.1% of Australians are living with mental ill health. Thats 1/5. Almost half of us (45%) will experience mental ill health at some point in our lives. However, less than half of the people who suffer with mental ill health will receive professional care. A significant barrier to seeking ...help for mental ill health is stigma. Research has shown that stigmatizing beliefs about mental ill health still exist in Australia. These beliefs lead to discrimination against people suffering with mental ill health, which discourages people from seeking help when they need it. Improving our knowledge about mental ill health (just like you are doing today!) is recognised as an important step towards decreasing stigma and supporting people to get assistance. #pushupfun #21ways2pushup #mentalhealth See more

14.01.2022 Those Rugby Players are tough !!! Nicholas Ward - the clinics Rugby playing Physiotherapist - taking the tougher option to help today's tally of 120 Push-Ups !!! This set of 120 push-ups represents the 1200 hours an average Australian young person spends on social media per year. Thats over 3 hours per day. The relationship between social media and mental health has generated a lot of concern. While there is some evidence that too much social media can increase stress, its ...not all bad news. In a UK study, young people who were online for at least 120 minutes per day felt more connected and supported by their peers. For people experiencing mental ill health, numerous peer-to-peer support communities have formed online that can increase connectedness, allow for sharing of stories, and promote a sense of belonging. Additionally, more mental health services are becoming available online. See more

14.01.2022 Due to the Australian Government's new regulations on #COVID19 we have had to limit our unsupervised hydrotherapy classes to 2 people. Unsupervised classes will also not be run during other class times. We apologise for the inconvenience. #socialdistancing #StaySafe

14.01.2022 Friday Flexing !!! Physiotherapist David (aka "EL DON") Calderon pumped out Push-Ups today - smiling his way to help reach the goal of 124 Reps for Friday. 2 more days of the challenge to go !!! Todays target is 124 push-ups. Under the Better Access Scheme, Australians who are experiencing mental ill health and are entitled to Medicare can receive rebates for up to 10 sessions with a mental health professional. There are many different mental health professionals available, and your GP can assist you in finding the right fit. The different types of mental health professional attract different rebates. In 2019, the Medicare rebate for a session with a clinical psychologist was up to $124.50. #21ways2pushup #pushupfun #mentalhealth

13.01.2022 Hi Everyone, Its been a surreal week to say the least and were doing everything we can to continue providing the safest and highest quality care to our valued clients. There is a lot of uncertainty as to what the next few months will hold and our thoughts go out to those who are doing it tough through this unprecedented time. A few things weve been working on this week... Our physiotherapists are now in the process of modifying hours to work as morning or afternoon practitioners, so there is no crossover throughout day as a means of infection control. We are encouraging social distancing in our waiting rooms to reduce unnecessary contact. We are encouraging all of our clients to use contactless payment at reception if possible We are in the process of setting up Telehealth so that we can provide confidential online consultations to our clients. There is a lot we can offer you without you having to leave the comfort of your own home. Its important that we all maintain our fitness, strength and mental health during this period. We can assist you to adapt your normal exercise routine to suit the new physical distancing rules. Finally, it is important to know that the physical distancing rule DOES NOT apply to health services, therefore we will continue to provide services of the safest and highest quality of care. Thank you for continuing to trust us with your health. Together we will all get through this.

13.01.2022 Don't put up with aches and pains this Easter weekend. We are open as normal Saturday 8am till 1pm and Sunday 10am till 1pm. #StaySafe #WhatAreWeekendsFor

12.01.2022 Wowzers !!! 180 Push-Ups today !!! Physiotherapist Ben Davies loves his Basketball - playing, coaching and treating many Basketball athletes !!! Ben took the Push-Up Challenge to another level today (while working on his shoulder joint stability). [watch the video - sound on] Its hard to quantify the total economic cost of mental ill health, which includes everything from appointments, hospital beds and medications, to more abstract costs, like lost productivity, diminished wellbeing, and decreased life expectancy. A draft report released in October 2019 by the Productivity Commission estimated that the total cost of mental ill health in Australia was approximately 180 billion dollars per year. #pushupfun #21ways2pushup #pushupformentalhealth

09.01.2022 Patients help out to achieve today's total of 180 Push-Ups !!! Support goes both ways in our clinic special thanks goes to this "Scottish-import" for all he does for many charities. Tour de Cure Australia Around 1.80 million Australians over the age of 15 feel they have insufficient social support, and one in four of us are feeling lonely three or more times per week. The impact of loneliness and social isolation can stretch beyond the short term and lead to increased risks... of developing mental and physical ill health. Loneliness doesnt necessarily go away if we are surrounded by people. In fact, young Australians report the highest rates of loneliness, despite often being in contact with large numbers of people every day at school, university, or work. For improving feelings of loneliness, quality is more important than quantity. Some experts suggest volunteering or joining a local club to create opportunities for building meaningful relationships. And who says all relationships need to be with humans? Companion animals can provide emotional support, and owning a pet has been linked to greater social contact with other people too. #pushupfun #21ways2pushup #mentalhealth See more

08.01.2022 For the toughest day of the challenge (Total = 232 Push-Ups), Physiotherapist Max Sadka added to the tally with the hardest Push-Up variation seen - on water !!! Will he fall in ??? [play video = sound on] Of the 3046 push-ups you or your team are completing this year, 2320 of them represent men who lost their life to suicide in Australia in 2018. Thats over 75% of the total. Women experience mental health issues at higher rates than men, but men are less likely to seek help... for them. Some spaces within our communities exist especially to support the mental health of the men in our lives, like the Mens Shed. Mens Sheds provide open workspaces where men can socialise, work, or help out their communities. If you or a male you know needs to talk to someone about mental health, Mensline is a national service for men providing referrals, counselling and support. 04.01.2022 Thank goodness for a lighter day - 130 reps was a welcome relief (did we just say that) !!! Headspace provides no- or low-cost mental health services to young Australians aged 12-25. They can also help young people with their physical and sexual health, provide information and support around alcohol and drugs, and give assistance with work or study. Around 75% of mental ill health presents before the age of 25, and suicide is the leading cause of death in the 15-44 age group, so the mental health of young Australians is of huge national importance. In 2018-2019, headspace provided support to over 130 000 young Australians. #pushupfun #21ways2pushup #mentalhealth

04.01.2022 How do you sleep at night ??? In the latter stages of pregnancy, SouthCare's Physiotherapist Claire Hobson (who shows more than an interest in Womens' Health), is preparing for a lack of sleep !!! But still helped the teams total of 148 Push-Ups today (modified technique for her late stage pregnancy) while learning more about sleep and the relationship with Mental Health. Research indicates that around 60% of Australians are experiencing regular disturbance in their sleep. In... fact, 14.8% of Australians are living with sleep disruption symptoms severe enough to be classified as chronic insomnia. However, only half of those people (7.5%) identified themselves as having insomnia. This suggests that many people would benefit from an increased focus on their sleep health. There is a close relationship between how well we sleep and our mental health. This relationship goes both ways- poor sleep is associated with a higher risk of developing mental ill health, and many mental health conditions can lead to poorer sleep. We can all learn to practice better sleep behaviours to improve our sleep quality and duration. Sleep hygiene, mindfulness, and relaxation techniques have all been shown to have benefits. #pushupfun #21ways2pushup #mentalhealth See more

04.01.2022 We were definitely challenged today - but with perseverance and perspiration, managed to achieve the goal of 220 Push-Ups !!! Rest day tomorrow, before the final week of the challenge. Your 220 push-ups today are for the 2.20 million Australians that have been affected by intimate partner violence. Intimate partner violence contributes to more illness, disability and deaths than any other risk factor for women aged 1844 years. Research indicates that among Australian women who face a high degree of intimate partner violence, almost 90% will experience mental ill health during their lifetime. If you need assistance for intimate partner violence, you can call 1800RESPECT.

03.01.2022 As we head into the final day of the challenge, yesterday (during our 164 Reps) we reflected on all the conversations over the past 21 Days this challenge has sparked - and realised how fortunate we are as Physiotherapists/HealthCare Professionals to support people/patients in all aspects of their health care and lives. People with a diagnosis of mental illness are at much higher risk of physical diseases such as diabetes, lung disease, cancer and heart disease. This is lik...ely due to a number of factors, including the side effects of medications used to treat mental ill health, higher rates of cigarette smoking and alcohol use, focus on mental health treatment rather than physical health, and the social isolation and stigma that can accompany mental ill health. In Australia, this has contributed to a large life expectancy gap between those with severe mental ill health, and those without a similar diagnosis. One study estimated this gap at 16.4 years for men with a severe mental health diagnosis. Others have suggested that there could be up to a 30% reduction in total life expectancy- thats over 20 years. #21ways2pushup #pushupfun #mentalhealth See more

01.01.2022 A quick reminder that Southcare's Physiotherapy team is still available for all your physiotherapy needs over the weekend; Saturdays 8am till 1pm and Sundays 10am till 1pm #StaySafe #BestCare

01.01.2022 Practice Manager Extraordinaire - Dianne Fannon - is a true team player - contributing in many ways to our wonderful clinic - and today to the tally of 157 Push-Ups !!! [watch video - sound on] Todays 157 push-ups represent the 15.7% of Australian women who have anxiety-related mental health issues. Anxiety-related conditions are the most common mental health difficulty in Australia, and females experience these conditions at one and half times the rate of males. They are ev...en more common amongst young Australian women with nearly a quarter of females aged 15-24 having this experience. One type of treatment that can help with anxiety is cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). Cognitive behavioural therapy aims to identify, challenge, and ultimately change unhelpful patterns of thinking and behaviour. It teaches positive coping strategies and problem-solving skills, and can help people become active participants in their own treatment. #pushupfun #21ways2pushup #mentalhealth See more

01.01.2022 Day 21 and DONE !!! 105 Push-Up Repetitions capped off this amazing challenge - with the team at SouthCare Physiotherapy and SportsMed Murdoch playing a part across the event to help raise awareness of mental health. Thank you all !!! Resting up now - and ready for next year !!! Todays target is 105 push-ups: Its possible that getting 15 minutes of bright sunlight each morning could reduce levels of mental distress. 15 minutes, 7 days...thats 105 minutes of sunshine per week! There are a lot of factors that could be at work here to make sunlight a mood booster, including effects on your circadian rhythm, Vitamin D, or just being outside- getting into nature for a few hours per week can also help out your mental health. Whatever the reason- just be sensible! Sunburn doesnt improve anything. #21ways2pushup #pushupfun #mentalhealth
