16.01.2022 Our calls have dropped alarmingly. Logically, the reports of a spike in calls didn't make sense. I have had a couple of calls from women worried about a friend, which is heartbreaking.
14.01.2022 You might look at this and your first reaction is to laugh but let’s dig a little deeper and have a think about what drives this kind of behaviour and what it ...impacts upon. I was confronted by it earlier today as I took my morning walk. My corflute has been defaced, ripped off the side of a coffee van and moved to the entrance of the men’s toilets in Jaycee Park a children’s’ park! You might think it’s kind of funny. You know boys will be boys, right? (statistics say its most likely to be a young male). But what it’s really about is power, dominance, maybe neediness, and driven by toxic masculinity. My first thought was ‘Oh yeah, some smartass! Someone trying to assert their power. But then I stopped, as it hit home and I felt shocked, violated. This isn’t ‘just a joke, just a bit of fun’ - it’s misogyny. This is clearly about gender because it wouldn’t happen to a man. Why do we see penis graffiti and not vulva graffiti? Because drawing a penis on a female face affirms male dominance and perpetuates the patriarchal power structure. Quite simply, it is designed to humiliate, to denigrate and to send the message that women aren’t equal. If you think this was done by a passer-by who just spotted an opportunity for a bit of fun, then ask yourself how often you carry a black sharpie in your pocket? I am a woman, stepping into the public arena and clearly some misogynist is trying to bring me down. This is one of the reasons why women are loathe to stand for government elections, because of the hostile attention drawn to them that is solely about gender. How they look, their clothes, their hair, their age, their make up or lack of it, their bodies, their weight, their boobs, their bums and the off chance of having gender specific abuse hurled at them. What makes it even more grating is that I hold the MRCC Gender Equality portfolio, which Ali Cupper fought so hard to put in place, and along with members of Gender Equity Action Sunraysia, have worked to show the community that gender inequality is at the core of aggressive actions against women and addressing it benefits both men and women. There has been some pretty shabby behavior against women during this election campaign I am calling for the community, both men and women, to stand with me and declare ENOUGH! This is a human rights issue; women have the right to participate safely, freely and fully in political processes and to influence decisions that affect their lives. If you’re inclined to think this isn’t a big deal, then know that by not speaking up, you’re condoning disrespect and violence I ask all other candidates to join me in calling out this type of behavior as, not only completely unacceptable, but something in our community that needs to be addressed by us all collectively. 11.01.2022 Today as we mark White Ribbon Day it is a chance for each of us to stand up, speak out and do what we can to stop men’s violence against women. Violence agains...t women can happen anywhere. In our workplace, at home and in the community. Each of us can do something about it. During COVID we saw almost one in 10 Australian women in a relationship experience domestic violence and two-thirds saying the attacks started or became worse during the pandemic. If you see violence happening or behaviours that could lead to violence call it out. There really is no excuse.
10.01.2022 Covid-19 and Self-Isolation If you have to stay at home with a violent partner, here are some key points to consider: Identify safe areas of the house where t...here are ways to escape if possible. If possible, have a phone charged and accessible at all times with numbers to call. Call the police on 000 if things escalate and you are concerned for your safety. Notify the police if there are any Covid-19 concerns on site. Let trusted friends and neighbours know of your situation and develop a plan and visual signal for when you need help. Make a habit of backing the car into the driveway and keeping it fuelled. Your life and your children’s lives are important. If you must leave for safety reasons, then do so. If you have been exposed or you are sick park in a safe location and stay in the car while contacting a GP or hospital nearby to organise to get tested and to discuss quarantine options. Call DV Connect on 1800 811 811 to see if they can support with other accommodation options if needed.
