24.01.2022 Agronomy Update - Nathan Mudie The year 2019 is proving to be another challenging season for the entire Ravy district throwing us new challenges and issues that only a good drop of H2O would fix. With majority of the district sown dry for the second season in a row, arguably third for some growers this has created a lot of non-wetting issues on the lighter, gravel soil types which has provided poor uneven germinations. The photo below shows the left side sown into last year...s furrow and the right side seeded in-between and the difference is huge. Seed sitting with compound fertiliser for 4-6 weeks with partial moisture levels has also destroyed a lot of our seed sown into these non-wetting / dry soils and has been another cause of receiving poor germination. High nitrogen and murate of potash fertiliser products placed with the seed can be the most toxic in these conditions, although Phosphorus placed with the seed for 4-6 weeks without wetting up can be detrimental to seed survival as well. With patchy crop germinations it is also important to keep in mind the weed germinations will also be patchy and staggered throughout the year as well. Paddocks with radish or turnip, I highly recommend using a product with DFF so you can get 3-5 week residual to reduce the chance of a later germination. If planning to run with straight LVE MCPA as your broadleaf control highly consider adding 50 ml/ha of Brodal to get your DFF and gain some residual to limit the chance of late germinating broadies that are a pain come harvest time. Make sure you check your crop timing to keep all products in the correct window. Also, I highly recommend adding 60g/ha Lontrel to your broadleaf control as well for paddocks with a fleabane history. With poor crop canopies this means high light intensity and low competition, it could potentially be a perfect scenario for fleabane to get up and established if we get late spring rainfall. There are MANY achievements we could mention from Neils stella career, here are just a few: - 1965 commenced employment with Wesfarmers sorting the mail - Neil began auctioneering in Merredin in the early 70s. At one pig sale, Neil offered 7000 pigs for sale - In 1988 Neil sold one Merino Ram for $220, 000 - Throu...ghout the 70's and 80s Neil was Branch Manager of the Merredin, Bruce Rock, Narrogin, and Katanning Wesfarmers stores. - In 1991 Neil and Terry Haddleton took on the Esperance branch. The innovation shown by the two saw the business withstand tough times in the Livestock industry where sheep were $4 p/head - July 2019 Brindley Chatley was established - Neil has been involved in the sale of over 7.6 million sheep and over 700, 000 cattle - 11 January 2021 will be Neils 56th Anniversary with the Nutrien Ag Solutions business.
