21.01.2022 Baby on board! Tammar wallabies are currently naturally found in disjointed populations in the southwest and on Kangaroo Island in South Australia. While not listed as threatened, threats include predation by introduced foxes and feral cats, and inappropriate fire regimes. While not one of our target species, on-ground actions we undertake for threatened species in the same area are likely to have a positive impact on tammar wallabies. This image was taken on a remote camera ...we are using to monitor predator activity, and how that might affect malleefowl. National Landcare Program

16.01.2022 Freshwater ecologist Adrian Pinder from Parks and Wildlife Service, Western Australia visited Esperance's Lake Warden and Lake Gore last week for his annual survey of bird life and water quality at The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands listed sites. The data he has been collecting for the past 15 years provides an important insight into the health of these shorebird habitats right on Esperance's doorstep. Conditions were spectacular, even if the birds were a bit camera shy.

14.01.2022 For the first time ever, a critically endangered western ground parrot has been pictured on a camera trap! Less than 150 of this species are estimated to live i...n the wild. The camera is one of many deployed under our monitoring program in remote Nuytsland Nature Reserve and Cape Arid National Park on the south coast. The camera traps were installed in 2013 to monitor the activity of introduced predators such as feral cats. Over the past seven years staff and volunteers have processed over 355,700 images from camera traps deployed over 70,000 hectares of potential ground parrot habitat. The species is regularly monitored by automated audio recording devices, but capturing one on camera for the first time is an exciting milestone. Since bushfires burnt through key western ground parrot habitat last year, we have carried out additional feral cat baiting under our Western Shield wildlife recovery program, and we have worked to further protect key habitat from the impact of bushfires. This program receives support and funding from Friends of the Western Ground Parrot, BirdLife Australia, South Coast Natural Resource Management Inc. and the Commonwealth Bushfire Recovery Fund.

12.01.2022 Is enough being done to stop cats killing wildlife? The Albany and Surrounds Feral Cat Working Group wants to know what you think. The group’s founder Jenn...i Loveland said the group’s latest survey will canvas people’s opinion on the behaviour of both feral and domestic cats. There are a lot of special animals in the Albany and surrounds on the brink of disappearing, Mrs Loveland said. We need to do something now. According to the Department of Primary Industries, 36 mammals, 22 birds and 11 reptile species in WA are vulnerable to attack by feral cats. She said containment of domestic cats shouldn’t be much different to their alternative furry companion. Dogs have been kept in containment for many a year. Maybe it shouldn’t be that different for cats. The online survey targeting Albany, Denmark and Plantagenet - will inform education campaigns the group hopes to run in schools and libraries next year. 08.01.2022 Congratulations to Hon Sue Ellery MLC and Hon Stephen Dawson MLC for their Green Jobs Plan, which will support the conservation sector. Last week, it was announced that certain short courses will be offered free to young people and job seekers of all ages as part of the WA Recovery Plan. The skills learned in these courses provide a pathway to a qualification in Conservation and Land Management, among others. We are so grateful for the support of Minister Ellery and Minister Dawson.
