25.01.2022 This week, Dave took us through the research and practice of using Electrical stimulation of muscles during rehab. Often following an injury some muscles can be 'switched off', or inhibited, which leads to a very rapid loss of muscle mass and strength. This can be quite difficult to regain and lengthens the rehab process. The use of electrical stimulation of these muscles (in addition to regular exercise) can significantly reduce muscle loss and speed up the rehab process. If you would like to know more feel free to contact us at SCSM

25.01.2022 Ingrid, our exercise physiologist, presented to us in the Clinical Meeting this morning She showed us the cardiac adaptation to different types of exercises and how resistance training can be beneficial in managing chronic heart failure. With supervised exercise classes, we look after a number of patients doing their cardiac rehab. Please call if you want to know more.

24.01.2022 This week at our Clinical Meeting, Dave took us through Neurodynamics, or the way in which nerves move throughout the body. He demonstrated how this causes pain and how we can use this knowledge for best practice treatment techniques. Common conditions such as Sciatica can arise from various locations and sources and this requires specific diagnosis by your Doctor or Physio. Fun fact, did you know: The first description of using nerve testing was described on Papyrus by Imhotep in 2800 BC, when assessing low back pain in people building the Egyptian Pyramids!

12.01.2022 A slightly belated Happy Birthday to our Physiotherapist Sian. It hasn't been quite a year since Sian came to work with us and she has had to not only start her career in a different town but deal with a Pandemic too. She has coped admirably and helped her Netball team win a Grand Final. Let's hope the next year is a little less dramatic! Happy Birthday Sian!

12.01.2022 Today Jake, one of our Accredited Exercise Physiologist, critically analysed a journal article on the effects of low-dose resistance training on individuals with Parkinson's Disease. The article showed that low-dose resistance training can have a significant effect on muscular strength, body composition and activities of daily living. Did you know that South Coast Sports Medicine can provide one on one and group based exercise for people with neurological conditions? If you would like to know more feel free to contact us!

12.01.2022 Osteoporosis or low density of the bones affects over 1 million Australians. This disease makes bones become brittle leading to a higher risk of breaks than in normal bone. Osteoporosis occurs when bones lose minerals, such as calcium, more quickly than the body can replace them, causing a loss of bone thickness (bone density or mass). There are many risk factors to address when considering your risk of osteoporosis. These need to be investigated, and if these are addressed, then sometimes medications to make the bones stronger are needed. The doctors at South Coast Sports Medicine can advise on all of this, so if you are concerned, make an appointment. No referrals necessary.

10.01.2022 We perform strength exercises to keep fit and injury free but have you ever thought about training your foot muscles? In our clinical meeting this week, Sian, our physiotherapist, critically reviewed a research article investigating the effect of a foot strengthening program on reducing running related injuries. The study showed those who performed foot strength training were 2.4x less likely to develop an injury than those who did not. It has us thinking about working on foot strength a little more. If you are experiencing any pain or discomfort with running, please book in with one of our physiotherapists for a comprehensive assessment and treatment plan: foot strength work may well be included!

10.01.2022 The common liferstyles of men can lead to several chronic health conditions in the long and short term. Exercise is a great way to reduce most of these lifestyle factors and allow for fewer health issues later down the line. As many men work in high physical labour jobs, you may feel that this is enough exercise throughout the week although that is far from the truth. Recommended exercise guidelines suggest 30 minutes of continuous aerobic training and 2 resistance training sessions per week. These structured sessions increase your body's metabolic rate in a targeted manner promoting healthy metabolic adaptations far greater than physical labour alone. If you require a targeted training program or would like to chat with a professional about your health, speak with one of our team members today!

06.01.2022 In the Clinical meeting this week, the team presented 3 complex cases of Recurrent Shoulder Dislocation, a post-traumatic foot drop and a difficult to diagnose case of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. As a multi-disciplinary clinic that meets to discuss difficult cases, it helps flow for patients and great learning points for clinicians, as well as keeping us up to date with all the latest research.

06.01.2022 CLINICAL MEETING || Chronic Osteomyelitis / Charcot Arthropathy In response to a recent case, Dr. Russell reviewed the literature this morning around Osteomyelitis, a chronic infection of bone and compared its characteristics to those that develop predominantly in Diabetics causing a syndrome called Charcot Arthropathy. Jean-Martin Charcot, a French neurologist, described unusual joint features in the 1880’s and they continue to be a significant cause of pain and instability ...in ankles. South Coast Sports Medicine has doctors who specialise in diseases of the joints and bones. As part of our ongoing professional development, we have a meeting every Monday morning to review journal articles, new advances in Sports Medicine and review relevant topics. Book in if you have questions about your bone health or need more insight into a particular condition affecting joints or muscle.

04.01.2022 COVID Update: Last week in our clinical meeting Jen talked about the ongoing process of risk management at SCSM and the team brainstormed how we can improve our COVID plan and prepare for new developments. Today, while a large part of the WA population are starting a 5 day lockdown, we are feeling grateful to be in the Great Southern and sending our thoughts to our family, friends and colleagues in Perth.... This is a timely reminder for us all so please note the following: 1. We now have QR codes for visitors to scan with their SafeWA app, and a written risk register. This is NOT necessary for clients who have an appointment, only for other people attending such as family and carers. 2. Please continue to observe excellent hygiene and social distancing within our clinic. 3. Please DO NOT attend if you have a fever or cold and flu symptoms. If you have any questions about this phone us before coming in to the clinic. 4. We are always striving to improve so if you notice anything which we could be doing better please let the admin team know.

03.01.2022 Monday’s PD session looked into Dry Needling as an additional treatment technique for musculoskeletal issues. Stacey gave the team an insight into the what, when, how and whys behind needling. Our Physio’s are all trained in dry needling and are able to determine when it may be useful clinically, in combination with other treatments and exercise prescription. Feel free to ask if you would like any dry needling myths busted and the evidence explained!

03.01.2022 Two of our amazing team faced off in the Great Southern Womens AFL last Friday: Jaz and North Albany will be wanting to make up for a close defeat tonight as they host Denmark. Sian will hope to take her great form to a win against Royals tonight. Good Luck!

03.01.2022 We are Hiring! PHYSIOTHERAPIST required to join our great team. For more information please contact:... John Toomey Managing Director [email protected] (m) 0407 519 232 or David Scriven Head of Physiotherapy Dept. [email protected] (m) 0403 943 239

01.01.2022 CLINICAL MEETING || This morning, our naturopath/nutritionist, Kate, spoke with the rest of the team about the therapeutic use of fish oil supplements in Rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis & cardiovascular disease. If you're choosing to take any supplement, there are three questions you need to ask yourself and your suitably qualified health care provider: 1) Is it safe for me? Checking interactions with other medicines you take or likelihood for adverse effects consideri...ng other health conditions 2) Is it worth it? As in, is there reliable evidence that the supplement will have the desired health outcome? 3) What dose do I need? Taking the therapeutic dose is important to make sure you're more likely to have the desired outcome. When thinking about fish oil supplements in particular, there are a few things to think about: 1) Look for a 'concentrated' formula that lists the exact amount of EPA & DHA components of the fish oil each capsule contains so you can make a good decision about the dose... you usually get what you pay for! 2) Check for a GOED certification so you know the level of purity is the highest possible. 3) Check for the companies sustainability policy - being certified by 'Friends of the Sea' is a good start. 4) Read the label closely! Reputable companies will list how many capsules you need for specific conditions, if that information is not there, consult your favourite naturopath, nutritionist or pharmacist
