24.01.2022 I have a wonderful special guest for you this week on my Sat Date Night concert, the lovely Sylvie Simmons, who writes beautiful intimate songs on the ukelele, ...and is also a great music writer (and author of my favourite biography of Leonard Cohen). Coming to us from San Francisco! See you at 9.30pm AEST Saturday! On here on on my YouTube channel! A bit more about Sylvie and her new album: BLUE ON BLUE, the new album by renowned singer, writer and ukulele-player Sylvie Simmons. Its the follow-up to her revelatory 2014 debut SYLVIEan album that The Guardian hailed as One of the most beautiful albums of the year. Spell-binding, and Devendra Banhart called Fragile and fearless, direct and poetic, timeless and absolutely beautiful. Her unforgettable songs, delicate but sensual and bold, earned unanimous praise and rave reviews, with comparisons to a young Marianne Faithfull, a punk Piaf, and a female Leonard Cohenas well as a prime slot in the 2018 Ethan Hawke/Jesse Peretz movie Juliet, Naked, and shout-outs from fellow musicians including Rosanne Cash, Brian Wilson and Elvis Costello. If her first album seemed to appear out of nowhere, in a way it did. For three and a half decades, before coming out as a singer-songwriter, Sylvieborn in London and based in Californiahad been an acclaimed rock writer, and the author of books including her celebrated biographies of Serge Gainsbourg, Neil Young and Leonard Cohen. It was after touring around the world for more than a year behind Im Your Man: The Life of Leonard Cohen (her 2012 book which now has over 25 translations), singing his songs and accompanying herself on a ukulele, that Sylvie did the near-impossible and crossed over into writing and recording her own songs, with the encouragement and accompaniment of Howe Gelb of Giant Sand, who produced her first album. The band on BLUE ON BLUE consists of Gelb, Thoger Lund, Gabriel Sullivan and Brian Lopez from Tucson, plus Australian Matt Wilkinson and Jim White (Wrong-Eyed Jesus) from Athens, Georgia. Sylvie plays ukulelean instrument she first started playing in 2005. Id always thought of the uke as a toy, she says, a little handful of happiness. But not any more. From the moment I picked it up, I fell in love. A ukulele has a sad, fractured sweetness, like a broken harp. And a modesty. It doesnt try to impress you, it almost apologizes for being there. Abandoning her piano and guitar, her songs came through this tiny instrument with all their heartbreak and truth intact.

22.01.2022 In this special SOUND ADVICE Facebook Live event, chart-topping, regionally-based artist Fanny Lumsden will lay out what it takes to manage your own career. _________________________________ If you're an emerging artist, getting a manager might feel like the next logical step forward for you and your career, but that's not always true. Whether it be that the timing isn't quite right, or that keeping hold of the reins yourself is just a better fit your career, self-management ...could be the stronger option for you. But how do you know if it is? And if it is, how the heck do you do it yourself? Lucky for us, award-winning self-managed artist Fanny Lumsden is going LIVE for the next instalment of SOUND ADVICE with MusicNSW to answer these questions and more with a special focus on regional NSW.

22.01.2022 2020 OLGA MASTERS SHORT STORY AWARD WINNERS South East Arts, The Masters Family, Island Magazine, and South Coast Writers Centre would like to congratulate the Runner-Up of the Olga Masters Short Story Award Youth Prize, Helen Lovegrove, for her story: Boarding and Bagpipes. "I have had a love of reading books from an early age, and my writing started out as an attempt to reinvent myself with my favorite characters in stories. I have been encouraged by some great teachers, wh...o have helped me find my own stories and characters. At the start my thoughts always flew faster than I could write or type, but with practice over the years I have learned to outline characters and plots of stories so that I can come back to them and I can now type pretty fast too! I have been drawn towards writing science fiction and fantasy (my Dad has a huge collection I am reading through), but I mostly enjoy writing characters who tell jokes, have fun and are kind. As well as reading and writing my interests include learning to drive around the streets and highways of WA, playing cricket and a wide variety of musical instruments including the bagpipes!" You can read Helen's story and other winning entries by clicking the link below: https://www.olgamastersshortstoryaward.com/2020-winners Once again, congratulations to all 128 entrants of the Olga Masters Short Story Award 2020. 16.01.2022 Congratulations to Yuin man Lloyd Hornsby, on becoming an internationally acclaimed Indigenous artist with a painting set to hang in the Louvre in October 2020.... One of his artworks shown here 'Spirits of Warriors Past', depicts the Dreaming story of reincarnated ancestors as orcas. In the Dreaming of the Yuin people, killer whales are considred to be their totem animal and reincarnations of their ancestors. Yuin elder Guboo Ted Thomas heard stories of his grandfather riding on the backs of killer whales; and there are strong connections to the migrations of orcas and the rising on the star cluster the Pleiades in the constellaton of Taurus. Mr Hornsby says he achieves the celestial look by using actual images of galaxies and star systems while he paints. (Source: Donal Sheil) See more

06.01.2022 Now available to view online #linkinbio Gangguan Tenggara - Edisi Indonesia will open to the public Monday 21. Gangguan Tenggara Edisi Indonesia is the fourt...h and final in Bega Valley Regional Gallerys South/East Interference exhibition series. In this iteration the focus is on Indonesia and how we relate to one of our closest neighbours, says curator and gallery director Iain Dawson. In the context of an exhibition series about the south east from Begas place in south east New South Wales to Australias place in the region much of the work in Gangguan Tenggara highlights issues of perspective, community, centres and margins. Gangguan Tenggara features Leyla Stevens, Zico Albaiquni and Eko Nugroho, three artists who are making work about moving forward in Indonesian history but also acknowledging what has happened there the ghosts that still linger, Dawson says. The exhibition title Gangguan Tenggara roughly translates as South East Disturbance. The focus is on political agitation and its ongoing consequences, but the exhibition also seeks to disrupt the way Indonesia is seen by Australians as a playground and holiday destination. For Dawson, it also makes a point about what regional galleries can do. As he says, Theres a definite feeling that we are reaching out as well as bringing things in. Exhibition continues to November 7. Supported by @begavalleyshire @creatensw with loans from the artists, @yavuzgallery and @artgalleryofnsw See more
