25.01.2022 We’re back! Snake season is now well upon us. Over the following couple of months reptiles on the Gold Coast will become increasingly active as their annual opportunity to breed comes around once again. The following are things which can help you make your own property more snake safe. * Keep your lawn short and gardens clear of overgrowth. Snakes are excellent at camouflage and often blend in well with their surroundings. Unfortunately, this makes them prone to being stepp...ed on and accidentally disturbed, which can result in a bite. Keeping your lawn short and garden clear of thick overgrowth will increase your own visibility which in turn reduces the likelihood of accidentally stumbling too close to a snake. * Remove any rubbish or unnecessary ground lying debris. Snakes are not awfully picky when it comes to selecting a place to shelter. Sheets of corrugated iron, log/rock piles, and even deserted household junk are ideal locations, especially when left unattended for extended periods of time. The more shelter sites your property provides - the more likely snakes are to hang around. * Keep your doors shut! Though snakes are not fond of being around people, they are prone to travelling indoors while searching for a cooler location to sit out the mid day heat. Unfortunately once inside snakes are easily disorientated and struggle to find a way out. If you are to encounter a snake at home this season you can get in contact with a Gold Coast snake catcher @ 0423 866 017. We are based in Arundel. Services are available 24hrs a day. We’re always happy to identify snakes over the phone if you are able to grab a photo. (WITHOUT moving close or agitating the snake in any way a photo is not worth getting bitten for). Send any photos via text message to 0423 866 017.
24.01.2022 The Common Scaly Foot Legless Lizard is a less frequently encountered lizard species found here on the Gold Coast. This species can grow to a total length of 1m, although most individuals average around 60-70cm. Within South East Queensland almost all individuals are a grey to orange coloration with keeled dorsal scales. Small darker coloured spots/blotches are normally present on the lizard’s face and tail. Though uncommon to sight within suburbia they are relatively abund...ant within the hinterland and bordering areas where ideal habitat persists. Rocky outcrops, dry woodlands and heath land are favoured. Common Scaly Foots are best differentiated from snakes by their thick fleshy tongue (Rather than forked) and presence of ear holes.
23.01.2022 Nonvenomous. Bites from this species do not require urgent medical attention. The Keelback is considered a common snake species throughout the Gold Coast and Brisbane regions. They grow to a total length of 1.2m although most individuals average out around 70cm. Keelbacks are regularly encountered both during the day and at night however tend to be the most active around dusk or after rain. Well watered habitats including swampland and marshes are favoured by this species as... they largely feed on frogs. Just about all individuals are a dull brown to dark grey colouration with small darker blotches/speckles covering the doral surface from the head to tail tip. The name ‘Keelback’ refers to the small ridges or ‘keels’ can be found on each individual dorsal scale. SEE ALSO: ROUGH SCALED SNAKE.
22.01.2022 Highly venomous. Bites from this species require urgent medical attention. The Eastern Brown Snake is considered to be one of the most frequently encountered snake species throughout the Gold Coast and Brisbane regions. Although most individuals average around 1.5m these snakes are capable of reaching a total length of 2.2m. Eastern Brown Snakes inhabit a vast range of different habitats including coastal heath land, dry woodlands, grasslands and rocky outcrops. Suburban ar...eas are also favourable due to the higher abundance of rodents and man-made sheltering sites such as rock walls. Despite their name, Eastern Brown Snakes come in numerous different shades including brown, black, grey, tan and even lighter shades of orange. Some individuals of this species are heavily speckled and/or banded. The ventral scales are littered with small, irregular sized spots which are normally an orange or copper colouration. When agitated they will often raise the first third of their body up off the ground in an ‘S’ position displaying these spots. Although Eastern Brown Snakes are notoriously known for their so called ‘aggressive’ behaviours these snakes will only bite when they feel threatened. Other common species which are frequently misidentified for Eastern Brown Snakes: Marsh Snake, Yellow Faced Whip Snake, Brown Tree Snake, Keelback, Dwarf Crowned Snake.
22.01.2022 A Coastal Carpet Python hitching a free ride on a truck in Helensvale. Believe it or not, this sort of occurrence is relatively common as parked up vehicles offer reptiles with a warm and inviting place to seek shelter. In most cases snakes will find their own way back out of a vehicle without even being noticed. The unlucky few which fail to escape before being taken for a ride are unfortunately prone to sustaining injuries along the way and often find it difficult to read...just where they end up. Fortunately on this circumstance the snake had been spotted before the truck continued on its route and could be safely returned back to nearby bushland. 21.01.2022 A Coastal Carpet Python from Ormeau Hills with a lovely view to compliment his feathered breakfast. Due to causing a little bit of a disturbance this beautiful python was relocated back to nearby bushland where he can peacefully digest his meal. 19.01.2022 Here’s a juvenile Eastern Brown Snake which had recently been relocated from a premises in Hope Island. This particular snake is far from how most people would expect a ‘Brown Snake’ to look. Juvenile Eastern Brown Snakes are normally a shade of grey or brown with a darker coloured blotch on top of the head and a band across the nape. Some individuals however can also be heavily speckled or banded from head to tail tip just like this one. These bands will normally disappear as the snake reaches maturity although a small number of these snakes will retain the banding throughout their whole lives.
18.01.2022 An ‘orange’ Eastern Brown Snake relocated from a premises in Ormeau. Please keep in mind that I do have a photo album for just about every snake species found on the Gold Coast + some basic information on each, which I hope may aid some people in identification. I plan to keep these albums updated with the various different colour variations seen in each species as I come across them. Alternatively, in more immediate instances feel free to text me through a photo on 0423 86...6 017 and I will get back to you as soon as possible. Have a fantastic night Mitch

17.01.2022 Highly venomous. Bites from this species have resulted in human deaths. Seek urgent medical attention if bitten. The Eastern Tiger Snake is one of the least frequently encountered snake species which can be found within South East Queensland. They grow rather large, to a maximum length of just over two meters although the average length of this species is around 1.1 meters. These guys have a very large, triangular shaped head with bands of irregular widths covering the snake...’s dorsal scales from nape to tail. Tiger Snakes are largely diurnal (Active by day) although it’s not uncommon to find this species active during warmer evenings. Throughout the Gold Coast Tiger Snakes are rarely associated with suburban landscapes with populations being restricted to pockets of ideal habitat within the hinterland ranges. Most individuals sighted locally appear in Beechmont, Springbrook, Binna Burra & O’reilleys. In the presence of a threat, these snakes will flatten out their neck almost like a cobra, before striking if further provoked. After each mating season, pregnant females will give birth to a live-clutch of between 11 to 109 young. Species often confused with the Eastern Tiger Snake: The banded form of the Eastern Brown Snake, Stephens Banded Snake, Rough Scaled Snake, Brown Tree Snake, Keelback Snake.
12.01.2022 A Red Naped Snake relocated from a premises on Tamborine Mountain. This cute little snake had managed to find his way into a families’ kitchen and gave them a bit of a freight. At only 5-6mm in diameter he would have no problem squeezing through a tiny gap under a door. The Red Naped Snake is not typically found throughout the majority of the Gold Coast. Nearby populations are mostly restricted to drier habitats on the western side of our hinterland range (By Canungra & Jim...boomba) although one individual has also been found in Yatala by a fellow catcher. Bites from this species are not generally considered as dangerous to humans however as always we advise treating any snake bite as serious until proven otherwise by a professional. 08.01.2022 A Keelback or 'Freshwater Snake' relocated from inside a home in Arundel. Interesting fact: The Keelback Snake is one of the very few native Australian animals which show signs of immunity towards the introduced Cane Toads’ poison. Both adult and juvenile specimens of this species have been sighted feeding on younger Cane Toads with nil negative effects. What a handy animal to have around. 07.01.2022 Here’s a lovely, speckled looking Eastern Brown Snake which had been relocated from a property in Nerang yesterday. Eastern Brown Snakes largely prey on rodents and are incredibly beneficial when it comes to naturally controlling rat and mice populations throughout suburbia. Unlike Python species Brown Snakes are not capable of digesting super large prey items however their fast metabolism means they are able to feed more frequently. Just prior to my arrival this particular... snake from Nerang had chased out a whole colony of rats from underneath a concrete step. One of which he managed to catch and swallow before I arrived. The final 2 photos were taken by the customer of the snake enjoying his well deserved meal. Gold Coast snake identification & relocation @ 0423 866 017. Based in Arundel. Available 24/7.
03.01.2022 The Three Clawed Worm Skink or ‘Verreaux's Skink’ is an abundant lizard species throughout the Gold Coast & Brisbane regions. Within suburbia these guys are most commonly found sheltering in piles of mulch and leaf litter during the day or actively foraging on humid nights. Three Clawed Worm Skinks grow to a total length of 40cm although individuals normally average around 25-30cm. Not an awful lot of variation is witnessed within this species with almost all individuals being a yellowish-brown colouration with a broad yellow band across the nape. This band across the nape is normally more vibrant in juveniles. 4 small stump-like limbs with ‘3’ toes can also be seen at a closer glance. Similar looking species: Three Clawed Snake Toothed Skink.
02.01.2022 A beautiful juvenile Red Bellied Black Snake relocated from a property in Coomera Waters. This little guy was conveniently waiting to greet me on the front lawn as soon as I arrived which made this one of the quickest and easiest jobs I've been to this season. Good luck little guy ... 02.01.2022 An odd looking Eastern Brown Snake relocated from a premises in Oxenford recently. Though this species is known for varying in colouration not all individuals display such a contrast of different shades as this one. Unfortunately the photo doesn't do this guy any justice. What a beautiful snake. Gold Coast snake identification & relocation @ 0423 866 017. Based in Arundel. Available 24/7.
