21.01.2022 Things are heating up! Remember that our pet's paws are sensitive to heat the same way our feet are! If you're unsure if the pavement is too hot to walk on, put your hand to the pavement for five seconds, if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for your dog!

19.01.2022 Christmas parties, dinners, squeals of excitement Christmas Day - while this is all part and parcel of Christmas time antics. We mustn't forget that this can be extremely stressful for our pets. It’s important to remember that even the friendliest, most patient dog or cat can become a danger when stressed, particularly to children so be mindful of your pet and how they are coping during the height of activity. Tips to help your pets this Christmas period:... - Create a ''safe space'' in a part of the house that is cool and calm where your pet can retreat to if they begin to feel overwhelmed with too many people or sounds. - Pay attention to your pet’s body language and if you notice your pet showing signs of anxiety including excessive yawning and lip licking in dogs take them away to their ''safe space'' so they can relax. - Try not to spoil your pet too much with human food , no matter how much they might be begging for it! This can upset their stomachs and can be toxic to their overall health. If your pet already displays heightened anxiety, our clinic has options such as Feliway and Adaptil that can assist your pet in feeling calm. Just ask our friendly team.

17.01.2022 We have a stray female tortoiseshell cat, who has no microchip or collar. She was found in Byng Street, Maroubra. Please share and help us locate her owner.... We have had to shave her, due to severe matting (hence the naked body).
16.01.2022 Take care when walking your dog along the beach. Puffer Fish store the toxin tetrodotoxin in their skin and internal organs. All parts of the fish can be toxic. ... Pufferfish can also be toxic to humans. If you observe any of the following symptoms, immediately take your pet to the vet. - Vomiting and diarrhea - Trembling and drooling - Wobbly walking - Difficulty breathing - Blue-tinged gums - Weakness - Dilated pupils and not blinking - Mentally dull and depressed - Paralysis and - Coma If your dog does vomit (and this next bit does sound gross) check to see if they bring up the remains of the fish and then very carefully bring the fish to the vet (use gloves etc) with your sick dog. This will help the Vet to identify the issue. It is important to act quickly as death can occur anywhere from as little as 20 minutes to 4 -6 hours post ingestion.

04.01.2022 Warmer weather may be lovely for us, but can be a nightmare for your pet. One of the many problems we see is the famous 'Hot Spot', also known as acute moist dermatitis or pyotraumatic dermatitis. Dog hot spots are areas of infected, inflamed skin that are very uncomfortable for your dog. Often these spots get moist or itchy and can even ooze. Your dog will likely be tempted to lick or chew the area of discomfort, but doing so only makes those hot spots worse.... This picture shows a nasty hot spot that has formed under this dogs ear. The fur is moist and the skin very red. To treat this, we need to shave the fur from the infected area, give the skin a clean and apply a cortisol cream provided by your Vet. We would also fit a bucket over the dog's head to prevent further scratching while the hot spot is healing. If you think your dog may have a hot spot, please call us to book in a consultation with one of our Vets.

01.01.2022 Christmas accessories and outfits might be cute for us humans, but they can cause your pet stress, discomfort and may even be a choking hazard.
