25.01.2022 Our residents participate in many daily activities which they may have engaged in when they lived at home - it can bring a sense of purpose, fulfillment and worth, especially for those experiencing dementia. Our Banora Point residents are an active lot in the kitchen, in the garden and even playing indoor bowls. And when the day is over, it's time to sit back and relax.
24.01.2022 Stella the Corgi is celebrating Spring with residents in our Deniliquin care home. Pet therapy can help residents with depression and loneliness. It can also help those living with dementia to be more interactive and sociable. Dementia affects close to half a million Australians. That number is set double in the next 25 years. This week is Dementia Action Week. For more information go to www.dementia.org.au/dementia-action-week
22.01.2022 Yes, Winter is well and truly behind us now and Spring is in full bloom. Our Banora Point care home residents have been crafting their way into Spring with lots of flower arrangements. There is something about Spring that puts a smile on everyone's faces, especially during this difficult year.
20.01.2022 Our Harden care home held a Mad Hatters Afternoon Tea recently. A delicious afternoon tea was provided, but only if you wore a mad hat. The afternoon tea was put together by our wonderful volunteers and staff joined in for a singalong and games with residents into the afternoon.
20.01.2022 The Parkes annual local show was cancelled this year due to COVID-19 concerns, so our Lifestyle team came up with a solution and organised their very own 'Parkes Show Day' for residents. Sample bags were put together for each resident and were filled with goodies. They enjoyed donuts for morning tea, dagwood dogs on a stick, a cup of hot chips and waffle cones for lunch. Everyone reminisced and shared happy memories about going to the show in their younger years; the beautiful merry-go-rounds, the boxing tent, free sample bags, kewpie dolls on a stick and of course, side show alley.
20.01.2022 Hazel from our Merrylands care home has just celebrated her 100th birthday. Hazel grew up in Dulwich Hill and started working at the age of 12, to help her family survive. She loves to dance and fell in love with her husband Bill, on their first dancing date in 1941. Hazel has a wicked sense of humour, a contagious laugh and a beaming smile.... Everyone at our Merrylands care home is inspired by Hazel, who celebrated the day with a little dance. Happy birthday Hazel. We are so lucky to have you in our care.
20.01.2022 Leslie Goldsmith was a resident of our St Lawrence care home in Harden NSW, but little was known about his background and war time experiences. Les had no contactable family and after his passing, no home for his war medals and belongings. Thanks to some caring staff members, Leslie's story can now be told, and his efforts acknowledged. A permanent commemorative wall unveiled on Remembrance Day pays tribute to Leslie and others who displayed courage and self-sacrifice. read the full story here.
20.01.2022 For our residents living with dementia, gardening brings a sense of joy and achievement, and can improve their general wellbeing. Gardening can also get you more social and into the outdoors, which stimulates vitamin D and provides a better night's sleep. Our Bateau Bay residents are now enjoying some Springtime gardening and a little conversation in the sun.... Dementia Australia #DementiaActionWeek See more
19.01.2022 Ten-pin bowling is a favourite activity with our residents. Many would have competed in bowling competitions as children or adults, and it has physical and mental health benefits too. Importantly, it's also reassuring to know that any out of control bowling balls are made of light plastic! Congratulations to our competitive Caves Beach residents, who achieved some high scores and strikes.
19.01.2022 Happy 100th birthday to our wonderful Elwyn from our Tweed Heads care home. Elwyn celebrated the milestone yesterday and believes the secret to her long life is good genes and that she never drank alcohol or smoked. Elwyn was a bookkeeper but always preferred to be a homemaker. She was also an excellent tennis player and her biggest thrill was beating her eldest son during a singles match. Best wishes Elwyn.
18.01.2022 Please stay safe and informed with the recent COVID-19 outbreaks in NSW. You can follow the latest NSW Health updates on hot spots and advice here.
17.01.2022 Our Cootamundra care home residents tested their left-handed skills during International Left Handers Day recently. The day celebrates the uniqueness of left-handers in a world dominated by right-handers. Residents tried opening cans, peeling vegetables, folding napkins and picking up popcorn with tongs. There were also a few paper fingers lost in this process, but everyone enjoyed the challenge.... Other famous left-handers include scientist Sir Isaac Newton, painter Pablo Picasso, former US President Barack Obama and media personality Oprah Winfrey.
16.01.2022 People who live with dementia sometimes need a bit longer to tell you what is on their mind. Giving them a minute to find the right words gives them the confidence to keep communicating. Visit https://discrimination.dementia.org.au/action-week/ for more information.
16.01.2022 A Mad Hatters Tea Party was held at our Garran care home recently. Residents donned their favourite hats for the occasion and were treated to a banquet of scones, decorated biscuits and a sumptuous heart shaped savory selection. And the afternoon movie? 15.01.2022 Our Nagle Care Home residents have completed their annual Shire Winter Food Appeal, contributing to the needy families of the Sutherland Shire. 14.01.2022 We want to congratulate Vijin from our care home in Casino on recently accepting the role of Deputy Facility Manager. The friendly working environment at Casino is something Vijin really loves and one of the many reasons he's so thrilled to be working with us. "It's very person-orientated here and it really motivates me," he says. Outside of caring for our residents, it's pretty obvious Vijin likes to keep pretty busy. He is a keen cricket player, taking to the pitch for the local Casino Magpies Cricket Club and he is also a DJ with a Certificate 3 in Electronic Music Production.
13.01.2022 Happy 100th birthday to Cyril from our Tweed Heads care home. Cyril received his letter from the Queen and was thrown a birthday party with his friends. 13.01.2022 Father's Day was celebrated across all our care homes yesterday. Our Corowa team made it a very special day with hats, chocolates, ginger beers, gift bags and hand made cards provided. Roast Beef and Pavlova was served as part of a scrumptious feast; and window visits, video calls and phone calls kept all our residents busy chatting throughout the day.
13.01.2022 Our Maroubra care home are getting musical with their 'Kildare Diamonds' band meeting weekly to play some tunes. These regular music sessions are important to bring residents together, recall some old memories and emotions from their past and most of all, have a lot of fun.
12.01.2022 Harley suffers from dementia and is supported at our Harden care home. He used to be a truck driver but is now surprising everyone with his passion for cooking. Harley is part of a dementia cooking group that meets regularly and he is continually striving to do better. He and the others are making scones of every variety, muffins and shortbread (melting moments) which are all shared for afternoon tea. Harley brings samples out to show all residents and staff and he is always ...very proud of the results. He provides input on recipes, how it can be improved and what to do different next time. The cooking group enjoy the cooking activity and serve up some great results, but they are mostly happy to watch Harley and praise his efforts. Cooking is an activity that can help with behavior problems for people with dementia, keeping them engaged and happy. Those scones look delicious Harley!
11.01.2022 Marcus was busy cuddling our residents at Banora Point recently. Marcus and other dogs providing pet therapy don't realise the difference they make to the wellbeing of residents, which can include reducing stress, alleviating depression and providing unconditional love and comfort. Thank you Marcus.
11.01.2022 Our Maroubra care home arts club residents have been busy painting their very own masterpieces. They have also been getting creative with technology and taking orders for their knitted mobile phone covers. These types of meaningful activities can assist residents with their emotional well being and they can also have a little fun along the way.
10.01.2022 This year due to COVID restrictions, our Thornton Park NSW residents were unable to invite families and friends to their annual memorial service so, residents and staff came together in the Chapel to remember and celebrate the life and memory of those who are no longer with us. Many residents and staff were in attendance and all involved throughout the service with the lighting of candles, hanging of hearts, poems, songs and in presenting white roses that were placed into a vase.
09.01.2022 This week is Dementia Action Week, which helps to provide greater awareness and understanding about dementia. Importantly, people living with dementia can continue to live well for many years after their diagnosis. This wall mural in our Harden care home was painted by a local artist and our residents contributed. These types of murals and wall paintings can improve the wellbeing of those with dementia, helping them to remember their lives and feel more at home. Some benefits of murals include a reduction in stress and aggression, an increased use of communal areas as well as increased sociability. Dementia Australia #DementiaActionWeek
09.01.2022 Our Merrylands care home have created a 'photo gallery' in their hallways, displaying lots of different activities, events and arts/crafts that residents have participated in during COVID-19. Residents were able to share memories and reminisce with each other during their walks through the gallery, which serves as a positive reminder of how life can go on during the COVID-19 crisis.

07.01.2022 Our Corowa care home residents were very excited to be recently having their first church service since February. Rev Richard played the piano and gave an encouraging message about new seasons ahead. Everyone appreciated the positivity after such a challenging year. Residents could also be heard singing along to some of their church favorites as the Rev Richard asked for requests.
07.01.2022 Whether it's a physio session, a game of Bingo, or a quick cuppa and chat to the Chef, our Swansea care home residents are a social lot and are kept pretty busy each day. Bingo may seem friendly enough, but can be especially competitive among some residents. Bingo can also help with memory and maintaining good hand-eye coordination.
06.01.2022 Kerry Flanagan is our new Lifestyle Officer in Corowa and is already having a ball with residents at our care home. 06.01.2022 We are excited to welcome Elvy to our Swansea care home family. Elvy is our newest registered nurse and worked in aged care in Sydney for 8 years before making her big sea change. "I have moved my whole family to the area. I love the local beaches, plus there is much less traffic! The care given here is all founded by the gifts of the holy spirit. I can say it is truly a beautiful place to work," says Elvy. We welcome Elvy and her family and look forward to her providing ongoing care to our residents.
05.01.2022 One little boy, when asked to explain about Fathers Day, said, Its just like Mothers Day, only you dont spend as much on the present. Whether youre are a young dad, a grand dad, a step dad or a dad in our care, we wish all of you in our SCC community a very Happy Fathers Day.
05.01.2022 With COVID-19 restrictions in place, the residents at our Swansea care home have missed regular visits from the neighbouring children of St Patrick's Primary School, so the school organised to treat the residents to a concert from the other side of the fence. The residents enjoyed sitting outside for the morning tea performance and hearing the children's little voices. The children also made posters for the residents and held them up as they sang.
04.01.2022 In the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic, its easy to forget those affected by cancer. Our residents got involved in Daffodil Day today to help support nearly 150,000 Australians who are diagnosed with cancer every year. The beautiful flowers also brought smiles to residents faces. We are sending our thoughts to all those affected.
03.01.2022 Spring is still being celebrated around our homes. In Grafton, there was peace and love in the air, and perhaps some confidence about a little normality returning after such a challenging year.
03.01.2022 Our Goulburn care home has been blessed by the enthusiasm of residents Father Laurie and his good mate Paul. These two wordsmiths produce regular newsletters for our Goulburn families and relatives. Their contribution is invaluable, keeping everyone informed and entertained. It also provides an opportunity for the duo to continue to do what they love, remain independent and contribute to the community in a meaningful way.
