21.01.2022 Ron Hill is a resident at our Caves Beach care home. He calls it his 'home away from home'. Ron considers himself lucky to receive recognition for his contribution to the war effort and was humbled to receive his 75th anniversary commemorative medallion and certificate. The medallions are being made available to every living veteran of the Second World War. Ron risked his life every day for our country and we are thankful we can now help him feel safe and cared for.
20.01.2022 Please take care of yourself and others during these heatwave conditions.
17.01.2022 We are so excited that the people we care for are safe and can celebrate this Christmas with familiy, friends and each other. We also want to thank our Southern Cross Care facebook family for their support and wish everyone a safe and happy festive season.
17.01.2022 The 2020 Tokyo Olympics may have been cancelled, but older people all around Australia are still taking part in the Tokyo Marathon, including some of our very own residents. The 30 day marathon included completing legs of the track and passing Tokyo landmarks as they race around tracks set up at aged care homes. It is hoped the Tokyo Marathon will awaken the competitive spirit within our residents and inspire them to move more. Our Maroubra Kildare Team have completed more than 80 Marathons now! Their efforts have inspired both young and old to keep moving during COVID-19.
17.01.2022 Due to the cancellation of the Leeton Show, the local show society invited the community to create a No Show Scarecrow to display along the fence of the showground. Our residents were inspired to create their own mother and baby scarecrows for the showground display. There were a lot of creative minds contributing to the job at hand and everyone was proud of their efforts.
16.01.2022 Our residents reflected on Remembrance Day this week and remembered all those who have lost their lives in wars and conflicts, and the sacrifice our service personnel have made in war time. Many residents have very strong memories and emotions about their experiences, but it's also an opportunity for them to share their stories, and for us to listen.
16.01.2022 NAIDOC Week was recently celebrated at our Maroubra care home. The week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Residents gathered in the function room and welcomed elders past and present, as well as welcoming new resident, Mary. Mary has extensive knowledge of Aboriginal Arts and was very happy to provide a presentation for the residents on the history of Aboriginal Arts, followed by mixing of paints and drawing activities.
15.01.2022 This year due to COVID restrictions, our Thornton Park NSW residents were unable to invite families and friends to their annual memorial service so, residents and staff came together in the Chapel to remember and celebrate the life and memory of those who are no longer with us. Many residents and staff were in attendance and all involved throughout the service with the lighting of candles, hanging of hearts, poems, songs and in presenting white roses that were placed into a vase.
14.01.2022 A Santa photo booth has been set up at our Campbell care home in the ACT to allow residents, families and staff to take and share photos of this wonderful time of year. Preparations an planning are now well underway for everyone to celebrate during the festive season.
13.01.2022 Our Goulburn care home residents have said that they have never had a Christmas tree at the front entrance. Because it's Christmas and we want to make sure wishes do come true, we have found the biggest, tallest Christmas tree in the area for all to admire. There has also been plenty of carol singing and music throughout December as our residents prepare to celebrate the festive season.
13.01.2022 We are keeping our residents connected and making sure the Christmas spirits are high during this time with Christmas themed lunches and carol singing using video technology. In Daceyville, Zoom sessions with one of our music therapists allowed residents and families to sing along to some of their favourite tunes. Residents also recently received gifts and Christmas wishes from students at St Michaels Primary School as part of their intergenerational program.
12.01.2022 We want to congratulate Vijin from our care home in Casino on recently accepting the role of Deputy Facility Manager. The friendly working environment at Casino is something Vijin really loves and one of the many reasons he's so thrilled to be working with us. "It's very person-orientated here and it really motivates me," he says. Outside of caring for our residents, it's pretty obvious Vijin likes to keep pretty busy. He is a keen cricket player, taking to the pitch for the local Casino Magpies Cricket Club and he is also a DJ with a Certificate 3 in Electronic Music Production.
10.01.2022 Spring is still being celebrated around our homes. In Grafton, there was peace and love in the air, and perhaps some confidence about a little normality returning after such a challenging year.
08.01.2022 Santa and his helpers were kept very busy across our care homes over the festive period, making sure the Christmas spirit was alive and bringing laughter, joy and fun to everyone. Special Christmas meals, Christmas carols and gift giving ensured that this is a time of joy and celebration for residents, families, friends and staff.
07.01.2022 As we reflect on the past 12 months we are thankful for those who helped during a devastating bushfire season and a Coronavirus pandemic that soon changed our lives and the world we live in. We thank everyone who helped keep the people we care for safe and well. Together, we'll get through this. ... We wish all our families and friends a much safer and more normal 2021.
06.01.2022 Our Corowa care home residents were very excited to be recently having their first church service since February. Rev Richard played the piano and gave an encouraging message about new seasons ahead. Everyone appreciated the positivity after such a challenging year. Residents could also be heard singing along to some of their church favorites as the Rev Richard asked for requests.
04.01.2022 Our Plumpton Village residents were encouraged to join in fundraising for the Cancer Council NSW by walking in a Relay for Life event recently. The funds raised will help fund vital cancer support services, and our residents know it just takes one person to make a difference. Our generous walkers & contributors raised over $600.
03.01.2022 Leslie Goldsmith was a resident of our St Lawrence care home in Harden NSW, but little was known about his background and war time experiences. Les had no contactable family and after his passing, no home for his war medals and belongings. Thanks to some caring staff members, Leslie's story can now be told, and his efforts acknowledged. A permanent commemorative wall unveiled on Remembrance Day pays tribute to Leslie and others who displayed courage and self-sacrifice. read the full story here.
03.01.2022 Remembrance Day is an important time of reflection for our residents, their families and friends. Many of our residents have served in wars and conflicts or know someone who did, so it's important to honour them and commemorate this very special day. For many of us, we'll never know the battles fought and the hardship endured on our behalf.
01.01.2022 We are introducing some old look new technology for residents in some of our homes, with retro handsets specially designed for mobile phones and iPads to make phone calls fun again. Combining old school style with new technology helps our residents to relive the good old days and enjoy the classic feeling of twirling the telephone receiver cord around your fingers until its all tangled up as you chat happily with your family and friends.
01.01.2022 What do you do with a huge box of empty Lindt chocolate baubles? Doris and Dawn are residents at our Harden care home and are repurposing the baubles for their Christmas display. Hand made wooden reindeers from the Cootamundra Men's Shed are also be used to help decorate the care home for the festive celebrations over coming weeks.
01.01.2022 Our Merrylands care home have created a 'photo gallery' in their hallways, displaying lots of different activities, events and arts/crafts that residents have participated in during COVID-19. Residents were able to share memories and reminisce with each other during their walks through the gallery, which serves as a positive reminder of how life can go on during the COVID-19 crisis.
