21.01.2022 Survey into owner knowledge and attitudes toward colic surgery Have you ever had to decide to refer a horse for colic surgery? Have you ever thought about what you would do if you had to make that choice at short notice? Staff at the Camden Equine Centre, University of Sydney are conducting a survey into owner knowledge and attitudes toward colic surgery. We are investigating if there are trends between the owner demographics and previous experience with colic, and whether ow...ners elect to send horses for emergency surgery. This may help future veterinarians better understand how they can support horse owners whilst they make this difficult decision. This results from the survey will hopefully allow for better insights into the horse owners understanding of outcomes of colic surgery and lead to the development of better information resources for owners. The survey consists of about 20 questions and should only take about 20 minutes of your time. To complete the survey and to learn about a project, please go to: https://redcap.sydney.edu.au/surveys/?s=C8CMC4MXXL To learn more about the project and for a full participant information statement, please go to: https://colicsurvey.weebly.com/ See more

18.01.2022 Important reminder

18.01.2022 Thinking of horse owners tomorrow with the catastrophic fire alerts. If you are not able to move your horses to safe areas open internal gates tie them back with wire to give your horse the best opportunity to get out of the way of the fire. Only internal gates- you do not want your horses out potentially on roads. Remove halters. Make sure you leave plenty of water in case you are not able to return to your property for a while. https://www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au/BushFire_Saf//Horses.aspx

18.01.2022 A very different Anzac Day this year as we stand at our front gates and remember the sacrifices made. Heres my boy, Gully. Lest we forget. https://www.horsetalk.co.nz//04/21/horses-riders-anzac-day/

17.01.2022 Makes me want to go for a ride on the beach.

17.01.2022 Some ponies just cant help themselves.

17.01.2022 When you call yourself Southern Cross Equine Vet of course you are working Australia Day! Have a horsey long weekend and stay safe.

16.01.2022 Today we were meant to be enjoying this gorgeous sunshine at Moss Vale Show - the showground looks very quiet today. Even quieter than this photo from 1933. Instead we are dealing with COVID-19. Those of us fortunate enough to have horses can hopefully spend this time of social distancing with our horses who luckily can not contract COVID-19. Please find a link to some important information. https://southerncrossequinevet.com.au/coronavirus

11.01.2022 Keep an eye out for fireweed! Now are the perfect conditions for fireweed (Senecio madagascariensis) to flourish. It looks like a daisy - little yellow flowers. It invades pastures and can be DEADLY to horses. A single plant produces up to 30,000 seeds each season. The problem is they contain chemicals called pyrrolizidine alkaloids. Livestock that eat fireweed get liver damage. The damage gets worse the more an animal eats. If you think you have affected animals contact you...r vet immediately. Symptoms in horses: * general dullness * aimless wandering * uncoordinated gait * pressing up against fences, gates or trees * reduced awareness, and possible blindness * Unpigmented skin can become sensitive to sunlight, redden and peel away.

11.01.2022 If anyone has a mare thats lost a foal this foal would be very appreciative of a new mum.

09.01.2022 Do you know how to body-score your pony? The riders at Wollondilly Pony Club do! Great club, lovely day and to top it off some rain Beautiful!

07.01.2022 Love getting to know wonderful horse folk of the Southern Highlands. Gave a talk on tendon injuries to Burradoo Polocrosse Club last night. Sport horses especially those working on hard ground run a greater risk of tendon injuries. Such a lovely bunch of people and a delicious bbq to boot which as anyone who knows me will agree is the way to this vets heart. If you would like me to give a talk to your club on any aspect of horse health give me a call 0413834370

07.01.2022 I was there at SIEC 20 years ago. It was such a hot day! Anyone else remember it?
