24.01.2022 What a beautiful day it turned into once the sun made its appearance!
24.01.2022 Yesterday we welcomed Vermont Estate Orion into our home. Orion does not know there is a state other than drought, having been born into a seriously drought affected area, hence he does not look his best , but we will change that ! He is 13 months old, and yes, he is a purebred Percheron, despite his colour. Chestnut is the rarest colour in this breed, and, I believe, worldwide only 2% of Percherons are born this colour. We thank his breeder for entrusting us with this gentle soul, and hope the drought breaks soon for them. A massive thank you also to M&J Petersen Horse Transport for looking after him so well on his almost 2000 km trip across the country.
23.01.2022 Bramble and I went to a Working Equitation clinic today, just to give him something different to do. While we are definitely a work in progress it was nice to see that none of the obstacles were in any way scary to him. In fact he wanted to check everything out with his nose and mouth, like a toddler in a toy shop lol
22.01.2022 And Henry is settled enough to stretch his legs in a bigger area, and to learn about electric fencing in the arena. Not that there was much action from that lol
20.01.2022 Miserable rainy day, but Henry is happy , he has a friend! :) Well, they are almost friends lol, Lucky for Henry, he knows how to behave around others very well and doesnt push his luck
20.01.2022 And today's entertainment for the big boys was whipper snipping , interesting enough for them to leave their big paddock. Unfortunately, Justice's idea of how to operate it almost ended in its demise lol, so it was observation only.
19.01.2022 After a wild and woolly night of wind and rain Henry was feeling a bit lively this morning. I just love this boy, and his beautiful smooth way of moving! Can't wait to find out what that feels like to ride :)
18.01.2022 JD had a flying visit ( literally) from his new mum today, all the way from Qld, where he will be joining her in a few weeks!
18.01.2022 More Henry spam :) settling in more and more every day.
18.01.2022 Some more JD spam from today. First time out of the round yard since he arrived, and he had a ball practicing his gymnastics with an array of happy squeals ! Pity it was such a dull and overcast day
17.01.2022 Why so much so young? The various horse industries, like racing, are not likely to change the way they have operated for hundreds of years, racing 2 and 3 year ...olds hard, but that doesnt mean they have to be copied by sport disciplines. I am a conservative about horse age. A yearling is a baby, and ought to be running around in a field. A 2 year old is a baby, and ought to be running around in a field. A 3 year old is a baby, but now big enough to start getting more handling. No damn "futurities." No "young horse programs." If you cant stand not doing something, put tack on, maybe spend some summer time doing some long lining, maybe get on him enough times that he wont buck you off, and throw him back out in the field. If you do nothing with a 3 year old except the basic shots, feet, teeth, leading, the same thing as with yearlings and two year olds, I dont think you are putting yourself behind the game. A 4 year old is a young adolescent. Like most adolescents, he needs a job, but not a hard, speed filled, spinning, wrenching, pounding job, so much as a slow, calm, body building job, lots of walking, the gradual acquisition of more musculature and body mass. You are still very much in a building mode. Five is either the last baby year, or the first semi-mature year, depending upon the horse. Ride and train carefully, and try to avoid two things most of all. Injury and frantic stress. Never put a 5 year old into some "young horse" program with a performance based time limit, unless he is one of those early maturing types, and even then, be careful. And NEVER with a 4 year old. Six, he is ready to start being a "normal" horse. I realize I am in the minority with my time line. Many horses are used up and done for by 6, 7, or 8. Or even younger. They are fried mentally, and injured physically by greedy riders and trainers who had no issue grinding on them too young. But if you can be patient, and give them time to grow up and get strong, you can still be riding those horses when they are late teenagers, into their early 20s, sometimes. What is the rush? Seriously?
17.01.2022 The big boys waiting for dinner.
16.01.2022 2020 has not been a good year for anyone, not only due to that dreadful Covid19, and ours has been no exception. EXCEPT for this ! Last night , in the dark, thi...s beautiful boy arrived after a looong trip from the other side of the country. Boonara View Henry is a baby purebred Percheron at only 2 years of age, but certainly no small fellow. We will never be able to thank his breeders enough for trusting us with this beautiful gentle boy. Well reared, cared for since conception, handled with love and respect since the day he was born, they did everything in their power to prepare him for this huge and unsettling trip. The transporter , Matt Petersen, has been singing his praises since the moment he picked him up a week and a half ago, and asked to occasionally see some photos to see how he develops. Thats quite a compliment from a man who sees hundreds of horses in a year :) See more
16.01.2022 RIP Orion You were only in our lives a few days but nobody could have asked for a sweeter little horse than you, we loved you from the moment we laid eyes on you. So many dreams of a life with you in it are going with you . We are beyond devastated , we will not forget you
15.01.2022 Early Christmas present for the boys! Its been a loooong time since they had hay laid on like this
15.01.2022 FOOD FOR THOUGHT Editing to preface this post with wise words from Manolo Mendez Dressage and Wolbunya Equine: "Read, think, agree or disagree, do more research..., take an anatomy course or read a book...all food for thought!" "FACT: You need to be aware of this information; how you act upon it is entirely up to you." I was holding off sharing this one until I could write a longer piece, but with too many other things to do, the time never arrived. Im sharing it anyway, in the hope it encourages others to learn and decide how they can apply these things in a way that works for them. The post was inspired by the mare these bones belong to, who demonstrated how late even an average size horse can have open growth plates through the base of the neck. Just shy of her eighth birthday, she had caudal physes still open to varying degrees, all the way from C5-T3. Along with several others in my bone library (and another post in its own right) she also demonstrated how asymmetry and crookedness can impact upon the lasting shape of the bone by warping the plates during closure. Asymmetry breeds further asymmetry. Read the poster however it applies in your world and take what you wish; just keep it civil, please! These statements are not intended to be read any particular way; they are meant to make you think about how you can best preserve your horses soundness in a way that works for both of you. For the best full length piece out there on the topic of skeletal maturity in horses, please read Dr Bennetts "Ranger" Piece - the link is below, and you will find a wealth of free resources on anatomy on the www.equinestudies.org home page! "All horses of all breeds mature skeletally at the same rate... No horse on earth, of any breed, at any time, is or has ever been mature before the age of six (plus or minus six months)." ~ Dr Deb Bennett, "Ranger" Piece (Timing & Rate of Skeletal Maturity in Horses) www.equinestudies.org/ranger_2008/ranger_piece_2008_pdf1.pdf "Bones dont move muscles; muscles move bones. 13.01.2022 Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee , my favourite big butts!
11.01.2022 Justices life is soooo hard!
10.01.2022 Bramble revisited his groundwork skills today, seeing he has been lounging in the paddock for a few months, with a saddle on to try the fit of his new , longer , girth. Safe to say, he tested it properly lol. while he obviously felt a bit fresh for a short moment, he remembered even the lateral movements we touched on before his long holiday. :)
10.01.2022 Likely the last lot of JD spam before he starts his new life. 5 minutes of juvenile enthusiasm after a good little training session :) 19 months and 1 week of age
10.01.2022 The boys had some visitors today. Even Justice, who is usually quite reserved with strangers, particularly men, didnt want to miss out on his share of tlc. In fact he lapped it all up :) The breed has some new fans now too
10.01.2022 It was finally time to try and step out of the deep dark hole left by the passing of our dog Albert, the tragic death of Orion and the decision to pts traumatised little Gulli, all within a 3 week period. What better way than to indulge in a pamper session with my most favourite , special man , Kamilaroi Justice.
09.01.2022 Some quick snaps of JD, the Percheron Giraffe, just before feed time tonight, dirty of course! Not complaining about the dirt, it shows we had some rain :)
09.01.2022 Another wet and miserable day, but every day is a good day spent around these guys ! Young Henry is obviously settled here now, and no longer takes s... from B...ramble the bully. Here they are in all their wet, grubby, posturing beauty :) Justice politely declined to participate, preferring to watch the silly youngsters with Storm and Dreamy See more
09.01.2022 Cant beat the temperament! Here is Bramble, still very green himself, teaching my complete beginner partner to ride ( Scotts 3rd ride)
08.01.2022 Bramble starting to come along quite well now, but those sticky flies dont make for a happy pony ....
07.01.2022 Beautiful Tilly
07.01.2022 An interesting article. Any horse person is familiar with the words GROWTH PLATES... these are properly referred to as EPIPHYSIS and are located on both ends... of each bone the same in every breed. This means that the ends of the bones are not attached until ossification is complete. WHICH ALSO MEANS early backing (before skeletal maturity) can displace the epiphysis. So... when does a horse skeletally mature and how do we know this? For centuries horsemen have known that horses mature in their fifth year at which time saddle training would begin. This does not mean that the horse didnt have preparation ground work... a really easy way to know if a horse is skeletally mature and ready for weight bearing on his back is when he or she has grown in his last permanent teeth which would be the 3rd molar. It is safe to say larger and longer necked horses may mature 6 months to 3 year later... what age should a horse be backed? The training process of weight bearing on the back should begin somewhere around 5 years of age and because training should be a slow process, beginning at a walk for several months, the horses body can adjust to this new load over his horizontal back. Proper training of a horse should take between 8 to 10 years before he is considered fully trained. This also allows for the appropriate time needed to build muscle at a natural rate . . . . . . #anatomyart #horseanatomystudy #equineanatomy #equinemassageandbodywork #equinetherapists #equinewellnessmagazine #equinewellness #horseart #equinesculpture #sculptureanatomy #horsetraining #horsetrainingtips #horsebreeding #horsemanagment #horsesnature #naturalhorse #horsemanship #horseshowing #horsegirl #babyhorses See more
07.01.2022 And he is on his way, loaded like a champion, so proud of him
07.01.2022 It appears offense has been taken at my request to not have my post of Henry shared on a different breed societys page , to the point of rather nasty messages being sent . Neither myself, nor his lovely breeder, think his photos should be shared on breed societys page that neither he nor his parents are reg with, especially without my consent. The request was polite and to the point, requiring no other action than the posts removal from that page - job done. Any further threatening or defamatory comments or messages might result in legal action....
06.01.2022 Justice being hover horse again, all because of those new sheep next door !
06.01.2022 "Mum, wait for us!" horrible dusty and windy day here today, enough to get the boys moving when they thought I might just have something of interest for them lol
05.01.2022 The big boys got a new paddock today!
03.01.2022 Amazing how much excitement is caused just by putting an extra horse into the same paddock. They all know each other well, but usually there is a fence between Dreamy and the two fat boys. The tubbies got some exercise at least :)
03.01.2022 Bramble pretty much all grown up at nearly 6 . Hard to believe he was ever that unthrifty, skinny, wormy yearling that arrived here 4 1/2 years ago
03.01.2022 Fatty Boomba and I had our first lesson with Lucy Williams today. Many thanks to Lucy for making me forget to be nervous ! And to Liz For putting up with nervous me, Deb and Bob for walking around the arena with us to start with, and Scott for these photos :)
02.01.2022 Bramble did not like missing out on attention, so he got the whole salon treatment as well. And yes, he really did shine like this, no editing other than cropping, the light was much better by this time.
02.01.2022 One last groom, travel halter on , the boy is ready for his big trip to the other side of the country. Just has to be brave and load on the truck in the dark .
02.01.2022 Tilly, Bracken, Bramble, Trojan and Daisys mum, 16 yo. looking a million dollars after the dreadful dry year that had the country resembling a desert. She is one tough mare, and an exceptional doer,
02.01.2022 When you take great care to place your horses with the most suitable person Here is Brambles little big brother, Trojan, enjoying his first ride out of the arena. He is a big boy, his rider is 6 tall. She has done all the work with him herself !
