24.01.2022 Ross Dwyer is Southern Soul’s guitarist. We asked him how he got into music and how he likes playing with Southern Soul’s ‘The Commitments’ tribute show. I started playing guitar when I was 11 years of age, and I became interested in guitar because I loved listening to my two older brothers' favourite music, which was Midnight Oil. I remember regularly playing the air guitar (in a serious way, not a joke way!) to Midnight Oil when I was young, so after watching me do this, m...y Mum and Dad thought that they should get me a guitar for Christmas that year! I loved playing it straight away! I love the freedom of expression, the different sounds that music has, and also seeing myself progress. I feel that everyone has certain talents; I am not the greatest guitar of all time, but I believe that guitar is my main talent, and I really love developing this special talent that I have been given. My favourite gig to date is my graduating recital at WAAPA in 2003, and I love that I have been able to travel with my music as well. I also love that I have been able to become a professional musician! I love the great grooves that The Commitments, and soul music in general, have, and really 'locking in' with the rest of the rhythm section especially. Southern Soul is a great band because everyone are super nice people as well as being nice players! Looking forward to our first gig!

19.01.2022 Meet Rusty and the Rockettes - the vocal team fronting Southern Soul and The Commitments tribute! Rusty Lynch is newly arrived in Denmark from Sydney, a powerhouse vocalist who has already made a reputation for himself performing with EXP and his own band Blues Power. Jen Greenwald is a vivacious singer, and can be heard fronting local band The Beardless Hipsters.... Heidi Marques mellow yet powerful vocal tones can be heard in Spindrift Jazz Duo or fronting the Rainbow Coast Big Band. Jen Croston lights up the room, bringing her experience from performing with Albany Light Opera Company. Together, Rusty and Rockettes provide the lead and backing vocals that make The Commitments soul revival sounds so special!
18.01.2022 Meet the Bush Family Brass section, plus David Rastrick - Southern Soul's fantabulous four-piece brass section. Karin Bush doubles on the big baritone saxophone and alto saxophone. Karin is a well respected music educator in Albany, and part of the Albany Sinphonia and Rainbow Coast Big Band. All the fun low sax' "ba-dum" bits you'll hear in the Commitments / Soul repertoire - that'll be her! Robbie Bush is Karin's brother, and well known for his screaming sax' playing in man...y Great Southern bands over the years - including Cyclone Tracee's rockin' band, and Taxi. Robbie's taking time off from busily making hay on the farm, to travel over to Denmark from the Porongorups for this Friday's show. Robbie stars on many solos in Southern Soul. Lindsay Bush is Robbie's son, and a rising star on the trombone! Lindsay can be heard with the Rainbow Coast Big Band and is currently starring as Mrs Trunchbull in Mt. Barker High School's production of Matilda. David Rastrick is an honorary member of the Bush Family Brass section. David's a prolific trumpeter/musician around the south-west, playing with a plethora of bands including Jazztrix, Rastatrix reggae band, EXP, Rainbow Coast Big Band and more. David has the job of arranging the music for Southern Soul, so we all play notes that fit together! You can hear the Bush Family Brass section contributing that big brass sound to Southern Soul 12-piece band at Denmark Civic Centre this Friday night!

16.01.2022 We asked Robbie Bush - Tenor Saxophonist with Southern Soul - a few questions: How did you get into playing saxophone? Just one of the 14 experimental musical instruments that was on the list at the time. Then after crossing the other 13 off, decided I was having the most fun with the sax so it stuck. And fun is what its really all about!... What do you like about it? The way it compliments the sound from other musicians. Any favourite experiences playing music? Jamming with a piano player called Hendo. What do you enjoy about soul music and The Commitments repertoire? It's the feel, the groove and the light hearted fun times that goes with it. How do you enjoy playing with Southern Soul and the brass section? Playing with great friends and family, all great musicians, nothing to dislike - everything to gain. A rare combination. Anything else you'd like to share about the project/music? There's is no other band like it in WA.

14.01.2022 Getting all set up and soundchecked! With David Nile on lights, Lauchie Gillett on filming, Jeff and Paul Meyers on sound!
14.01.2022 As well as the two sets of classics from The Commitments movie, for our show at Denmark Civic Centre on the 20th of November, we’ll be adding an extra set of RnB hits, for those who want to stay and party on!
14.01.2022 You may know Heidi Marques from her singing with Spindrift or the Rainbow Coast Big Band. Here she talks about her musical origins and soul: I first performed at the age of 5 and loved it so much that I have sung in various bands, choirs and productions ever since! Both my parents played in bands throughout my childhood, so music was very much part of our lives. That was where I was introduced to many varied styles of music, one of them being soul. What I love about soul is that it is raw, emotive and expressive. It has unforgettable rhythms and one thing I’ve realised, being part of Southern Soul’s vocal trio for the Commitments Tribute, is that with soul music, whether it be fast or slow, it is virtually impossible not to move to it!
14.01.2022 You may know Grant Moulden for his double bass playing. Did you know?: I traded my trombone in on an electric bass in 1975 because it seemed like a cool thing to do when you're 15. When playing soul music, locking in with the drums is what it's all about for a bass player, and Paul Meyers makes that so much easier. That and a dozen or so other musos including horns and singers and a bunch of classic songs will make for some great nights.
13.01.2022 Meet Greg Watson, pianist/keyboardist with Southern Soul’s ‘The Commitments’ Tribute: I started playing classical piano as a young fella, but only really got into contemporary music in my 20’s. Listening to bands like Steely Dan, The Meters, Stevie Wonder changed the way I looked at the piano. Its all about the groove and the way your part fits in with the other members of the band. I love being part of Southern Soul ‘cos I get to play with some awesome musicians. The rhythm section is sounding really tight, and it’s not every day you get to play with a full horn section - as well as a group of talented charismatic singers. I’m really looking forward to gigging with these guys, hope to see you there too!
12.01.2022 Meet Southern Soul vocalist Jen Croston: l’ve always loved singing, ever since I can remember, I first grew up listening to show tunes from all the big musicals because thats what my parents were into at the time. Later in my teenage years I used to sing at the top of my lungs into my hairbrush in my room to songs from 'Blondie' and my favourite group at the time 'The Cranberries'. Listening to all those show tunes must have had some influence as I’ve been involved with both... community theatres in Albany for the past 20 years, in a variety of roles and capacities. Being part of a quartette as Ronnette (one of the street urchins) in 'Little Shop Of Horrors' being a definite highlight more recently. I was lucky enough to be a member of 'The Albany City Chorus' for a few years as well where I got plenty of practice at singing against other harmonies. I absolutely love how soul music makes you feel, it’s virtually impossible to stay still while you listen to it, you just have to dance! The Commitments repertoire certainly lends itself to that with an awesome line up of songs that we all love to perform and I’m sure you will all love to groove to! Singing with Southern Soul has been a dream come true - everyone's super chill, extremely professional and an all round amazing bunch of people! I feel so lucky to be involved in 'The Commitments Trubute' and im enjoying every minute of it and I hope you all will too!

10.01.2022 Meet Rusty Lynch - vocalist with Southern Soul’s ‘The Commitments’ tribute! I started singing very young and always loved the feeling of freedom, expression and energy that it gave me. I started playing in bands when I was about 15 and have loved that ever since - the challenge, the camaraderie, the feeling of "oneness" that happens when the band is really humming and the exhilaration of playing live. I played original music for a long time and eventually moved into covers a...t about the age of 30. I enjoy that it (The Commitments repertoire) mixes up power-soul singing with tender ballads. It challenges me in a totally new way, as I have never sung much soul in my career. I think it will be a lot of fun to play live, as the high energy numbers will really get the dancefloor going. I love singing with Southern Soul. It is great fun to play with a big band like this and all of the personalities that come along with it. There are some really great players in the band too...
09.01.2022 You may have seen Paul Meyers around the place? I got into playing drums at a young age through a family friend he was a drummer in an old time dance band and I really don’t know what dragged me to love it it just sort of happened. I worked my way through the school system playing in concert bands learning to read music it was a fantastic experience. I played my first pub show at the age of 12 and have not stopped since. Playing with some great musicians along the way. I lik...e the feeling you get when the crowd is really enjoying what you do as a band and having a great time. Fortunately in my career I have had the chance to play with some amazing musicians locally, nationally and international artists I have been very fortunate. Soul music is a fun genre to play. I enjoy the feeling of this style of music. The Commitments repertoire is a great collection of songs that really sit well together and make for a fun night. It’s a great pleasure for me to play with the rhythm section of this outfit they are all great musicians but also great people. The whole band has very talented members. If you haven’t got a ticket to this show yet I cannot recommend it enough - It’s a great show to be apart of.
07.01.2022 Meet the 'Rhythm Ramblers' (a work-in-progress name), Southern Soul's solid Soul foundation! The rhythm team provides authentic Soul, RnB & Motown rhythms from the songs you love, with an uplifting groove and attention to detail. Guitarist Ross Dwyer has recently moved to Denmark WA from Perth. Ross' versatility and proficiency has allowed him to immerse himself in the local music scene. You may have heard Ross with EXP, Jazztrix, Rainbow Coast Big Band, at Albany Blues Club,... and plenty more. Greg Watson is a versatile musician and educator from Albany WA. While you may have heard Greg on drum-kit with funky bands such as Soul Porpoise and MoonBass Disco, or with jazz ensembles Jazztrix and Rainbow Coast Big Band, Greg is also an adept pianist, and has transferred his classical and rhythmic skills to the keyboard for the The Commitments tribute. Grant Moulden - a long-term resident of Denmark WA - is an iconic jazz double bassist in the Great Southern, known for his playing with bands such as Shaky Reed & Alan Keys, Jazztrix, Denmark High School Musical, Rainbow Coast Big Band, Denmark Fiddlers, and a host of others. In his upcoming years with Perth bands Grant played electric bass in Soul outfits, and The Commitments tribute is a return to these musical roots. Paul Meyers is one of the most in-demand session drummers on the South Coast, playing with bands such as Cyclone Tracee, Les Karski, Pinstripe, EXP, and more bands "than you could poke a stick at", as well as being a regular at the Albany Blues Club. Paul's known for laying down a solid and dependable beat - and rocks any room. Together, the Rhythm Ramblers are more than the sum of their parts - weaving together a rhythm at once funky, tight, intricate and incredibly danceable.
05.01.2022 A snapshot from the Denmark Bulletin - with Southern Soul featuring on the same page as WA Forest Alliance's documentary 'Cry of the Forests'...
04.01.2022 Meet Lindsay Bush, trombonist with Southern Soul’s ‘The Commitments’ tribute! I started playing the trombone when I was eleven and had lessons through school. Since then, I've grown to love the instrument and have taken every chance to better my playing and develop my skills. Recently I have grown to really appreciate different genres of music and have enjoyed gaining experience in playing with different groups. ... For me, soul music has become one of my favourite genres especially when performing with good players, and playing the Commitments repertoire with the Southern Soul band has helped to strengthen my love of the genre.
