24.01.2022 could anyone that took pics today please share them with me? does anyone have any concerns about me posting pics of kids with bridges? i haven't even looked at my pics yet, but i'm guessing i'm going to be the only one in the background of most pics

23.01.2022 Lost and found at STEM - from yesterday

22.01.2022 Hi folks, Our first session is tomorrow. The materials are here and I'll be sorting them into group sets today. Almost everyone has paid, thank you. See you tomorrow, doors open at 905am, we start building by 915am.

22.01.2022 hi, i've had a few parents message about whether their children should come along to bridge testing today. My answer is emphatically yes! i think looking at other peoples' ideas and watching how the bridges break is a really important aspect of learning to build, learning how forces are attenuated and just getting familiar with the processes for the next event. hope to see you there this morning at 915am

19.01.2022 last minute reminder, Bridge Building is on today - 9.15-11.15am last chance for supervised building time

17.01.2022 Our first activity is going to be Bridge Building. There will be kits available for individuals or small groups (up to 3) for $25. The kit will include all materials needed/allowed (balsa wood sticks, string and glue). I'm basing it on the Aurecom competition, using the same kit but with different testing procedures (https://www.aurecongroup.com//aurecon-bridge-building-comp). The basic premise is that each bridge will need to span a 650mm gap, and be 700mm long; there ar...e limits on width and height. There won't be any explicit instructions on how to build a bridge, the intention is to let kids explore their own ideas (some help may be provided as needed). Bridges will be broken in order to test them. Two straps will support a beam underneath where weights will be added to find the breaking point of each bridge. We will need two sessions, first for building (2 hrs) and second for testing (approx 1hr). If you're not finished building you can take your materials home to finish off. Testing could be run at the same time the following week. Sessions would be on a Tuesday or Thursday. I will (do my best to) schedule a time that meets the needs of most people. The session would be run from our home in Woodcroft (same location as Woodcroft PE and Social Group). I'll need to confirm numbers by Tues 11 Feb to order materials.

16.01.2022 The good news is that testing is next week! Testing will be on Tuesday 3 March, 9.15-11.15 (we may finish a little early). It's really important that everyone have their bridges ready before the day. There won't be time for glue to dry. We'll be checking that each bridge has met the size requirements and taking a picture of builders with their bridges before testing begins. One of the biggest lessons here is that testing (trying and failing) is part of the learning process.... These bridges are the first drafts, seeing how they break is just as important a part of the design process as building them. A number of people still need to finish their bridges. There will be tables set up during Social group this Friday (1-230pm) for anyone to finish their bridges.

11.01.2022 Bridge testing update - Testing is tomorrow and I'm nervous about everyone being ready. Here's where we're up to: B&K are finished but they got a lot of my help E&S are complete J&D are complete, but could still be improved C&E, N&Mum have been taken them home to finish (status unknown)... there's one other set without a name N&T's set is waiting for final works Can you please confirm that you/your kids will be there for testing tomorrow? Thanks

09.01.2022 Bridge building update - 6 kits are allocated, 1 is still available, 1 as a spare if don't get a request for money shortly, you're not on my list. I've only posted about this group on 2 home school groups. I will go wider to ensure that other kit gets used. many are sharing their kit = $12.50 per child

08.01.2022 hi folks, first STEM session was busy. we have scheduled an extra building session next week, and delayed the testing session until 3 March

04.01.2022 I've just ordered 8 kits. I'll let you know the exact price but it should be $25/kit. It seems the least-worst time is Tuesday morning. 9.15-11.15am 18 and 25 Feb If you have multiple children please let me know how many kits you will need ASAP. ... if this doesn't work for someone I might be able to bring it forward or back a week. After the process to arrive at this time, i'm hoping to schedule future sessions at the same time.
