24.01.2022 SCUBAPRO Deep Elite Ambassador Spotlight: Stephanie Arne While filming "Cities of the Sea" for CuriosityStream.com, I took a moment between takes to float in th...e middle of the kelp forest. Its hard not to be in awe of this underwater city, which provides life for sea lions, sea urchins, and sea stars. If it wasnt for the Scubapros bright white "S" on my Hydros Pro BCD, I might have been able to hide from the crew in the blue waters between the giant algae with my aqua, eco-friendly "Deep Elite Ambassador" wet suit. My favorite part of the dive was using the underwater scooter to zoom between the quick and acrobatic juvenile sea lions. They were so curious and playful. When I stopped moving, they would come right up to my mask to get a good look, and when I did a backflip, they copied me; If I tossed them a piece of kelp, they would catch it and expect me to chase them for it, like a game of keep-away. Being welcomed into their underwater world in order to share the importance of this beautiful ecosystem was a remarkable experience, I will never forget. #deepdownyouwantthebest #deepeliteambassador #scuba #diving #kelpforest #explore #underwater #adventure #ots #belowthesurface

21.01.2022 This week we have been featuring sponge gardens and deeper water ecostems of the Great Southern Reef. The waters around Governor Island Marine Reserve our from ...Bicheno, about 2.5h from Hobart or Launceston in Tasmania. The area was one of the first marine reserves established in Tasmania in 1991 and we can say without a doubt this place is absolutely teeming with life. The intertidal areas are dominated by wave tolerant bull kelp while the shallow waters support a variety of brown algae. In the deeper waters (below about 20m), where insufficient light prevents algal growth, massive granite boulders are covered in a vibrant patchwork of invertebrates, including sponges, sea whips, sea fans, sea tulips, zoanthids, anemones, bryozoans and hydroids. Winter provides the best visibility. The sponge garden in this picture is known as the hairy wall and is just a small section of a huge granite cliff face which meets a sandy bottom at around 35m.

05.01.2022 Olivia Johnson was the 2018 Australasian_ Our World Underwater Scholarship Society Rolex Scholar. Right now Olivia Johnson is working for the Institute for Mar...ine and Antarctic Studies - IMAS of Tasmania with the reefs interaction team and urchin research team. Her time is split between field work undertaking diving biodiversity surveys and rapid visual assessments of the reefs, ROV surveys of the local seagrass communities, as well as analysing the data she collects in the field. As the 2018 Australasian Rolex Scholar, I was thrilled and felt privileged for the opportunity to be able to travel the globe and meet world leaders and experts in the varying fields that stem from the ocean. I wanted to try my hand at as many opportunities as I was given, as I knew trying new things often led to doors opening in areas that you never might have seen yourself pursuing. Local ocean related issues in Tasmania had made me realise just how big of a gap there was between marine research and communicating this research to the wider public, or the out-of-sight, out-of-mind mentality that comes with critical ocean related issues. It seems humans tend to only protect what they can see and understand. Through the various experiences during my scholarship year I gained skills in science-communication, and importantly various practical research skills which I use in my job today." "Research opportunities during my scholarship year from shark research in Fiji and South Australia, temperate research in the Channel Islands and Alaska, Manta Ray research with remote local communities in the Philippines, to scientific voyages south to Antarctica looking at blue whales and krill, helped me realise my true passion was in marine ecological research and conservation. Marine research is exploration, and as scientists we are constantly discovering new things about the ocean, the roles of its inhabitants and the importance they have for keeping everything in balance."
