25.01.2022 A few of us recently had the chance to visit the Moorabbin Brass Band rooms. It's sad that they're now defunct: Moorabbin Brass Band was formed in 1879: I know that because I saw a placard for their centenary in 1979. That's over 140 years of history (albeit the last few were locked away). Jeremy is organising a posse to round up the memorabilia for the VBL's archives. Apologies for the slightly out-of-focus pictures.

24.01.2022 NOTE TO ALL MEMBERS: No rehearsal tonight. Thanks for a great rehearsal last night.

23.01.2022 Posting some YouTubes of a couple of the works we are rehearsing for next year. Both are performed by the same band and are stunning performances of these works. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovqFe9KhMj8

22.01.2022 To all our SACB friends, in light of fast moving events we have made the difficult decision to cancel our upcoming concert 'Going Places' scheduled for Sunday 22 March. We would have loved to have presented this concert to you but we recognise the need to minimise the impact of Coronavirus on the wider community. We wish you all well during this challenging time and look forward to presenting performances again once conditions have settled. Sincerely, the SACB Committee

22.01.2022 HELP NEEDED!! We are in need of some additional players for our Summer School Ensemble: - Double Reeds - Bari Sax - Low Brass... - Percussion It's a great opportunity to learn from the wonderful Caroline Beatty, but most importantly support our conductors working hard to develop their podium game. (Be sure to register so we know you are coming).

20.01.2022 Kingston City Council is currently renovating our band hall. That's a big part of the reason we're not going back to rehearsals during January. It will be interesting to see how things are improved when we get back. They're good landlords and sponsors: They have consulted with us at several stages of the process, and have been responsive to the very few issues we've had.

18.01.2022 A message from our President: Hi everyone, Over the past few days we have all seen concerns rise about the impact of COVID-19 in Australia. The SACB Committee and MD have considered our responsibilities to our members and to the wider community and have decided to cancel all rehearsals and performances for the SACB, SAWB and SSSB for the next month. After this time the Committee will review the situation and decide whether we can resume normal schedules or whether we need t...o extend this pause on our activities. For the SACB, this means that our concert next Sunday has been cancelled. The SSSB's performance at the Gnome and Fairy Festival this weekend was also cancelled. Thanks to everyone for putting in so much effort towards these performances. Rehearsal and music making is never wasted and we look forward to revisiting these works at a later date when things are more settled. The SAWB has had a wonderful start to the year with several new members and we are sorry to have to pause the progress this group is making. For each group this is a temporary recess and we can look forward to resuming our music making at some stage in the future even if we cannot make definite plans at the moment. We would like to make every effort to keep our ensembles engaged through other means while we are on this break. To this end, the Committee has asked Andrew, Drew and Jess to send a weekly email to their groups with suggestions for home practice, links to interesting performances and any other music performing and listening tips to keep us on track and give us ideas for develop own own playing and our appreciation of others'performances. We will also set up a What's App group for each ensemble as a way of maintaining links between band members. This is a challenging time for everyone and we are all having to make adjustments to different aspects of our lives. However, we hope we can all use this time to think of new and creative ways to keep our music making going and to consider new home-based opportunities to expand our musical horizons (I'm thinking of some band-based YouTube searches and a chance to develop new Spotify playlists. And dust off the old CDs!). Kind regards, Tracy

18.01.2022 Hope everybody has had a good break. Get your "chops" ready: rehearsals resume on Monday.

18.01.2022 We had a great rehearsal on Monday night, working on pieces for next year. Note that there will be NO REHEARSAL on Cup Eve (Monday 4 November), but there will be a rehearsal next week (Monday 28 October). Rehearsals on 11 November and 18 November will be focussing on music for the Citizenship Ceremony on 21 November.

15.01.2022 Congratulations to the pictured SACB members who have spent parts of this week contributing to the ABODA Conducting School Band. Its been a great week of music making and watching the conducting participants develop their art.

14.01.2022 Southern Area Concert Band, Inc is proudly (and well) supported by the City of Kingston

13.01.2022 Some members of SACB might remember Nick from his time with the band before he went off to join the Army bands.

13.01.2022 Our final gig for the year is tonight, at the Beaumaris Community Carols. Music (by the band) starts at 7:30PM tonight, at the Beaumaris Community Centre. It's usually a lovely community event, not overly crowded (and therefore suitable for those who don't like big crowds). Donations are being taken to help drought-affected farmers.... It should be perfect weather tonight.

11.01.2022 Countdown to Christmas Carols in the Park: FIVE days to go Weve put together a list and checked it twice, with some last-minute tips to make sure you have the most wonderful time of the year at Bayside's Carols in the Park.

07.01.2022 I hope you've all enjoyed your week off rehearsal. Tomorrow (11/11) and next week (18/11), we'll be focussing mainly on music for the Citizenship ceremony on Thursday 21st. There is likely to be some Christmas music in the rehearsal mix as well, so please come along even if you're not able to do the Citizenship Ceremony.

07.01.2022 Rehearsals for Tuesday's carols at Dendy Park are going well. Tonight's rehearsal is our last for the event. It has been a lot of fun. We're all looking forward to the concert.

07.01.2022 After many years of being a member of this band, it still feels strange for me NOT to be going to rehearsal on a Monday night during January. Rehearsing may have become a bit of a habit. Things will come right for me again when rehearsals resume in the first week of February.

05.01.2022 Hello to all the SACB band family and friends, We are delighted to announce the appointment of Jessica Jacobs to the role of Southern Area Wind Band Conductor! Jessica is a passionate community-focused musician and music educator. She studied conducting as part of a Masters of Music Performance Teaching degree and has acted as Assistant Conductor in the Box Hill Brass Band. Jessica has run a number of ensembles while she has been teaching in Melbourne during the last three ...years, including various school-based ensembles such as the Beginner and Junior Band at Aquinas College, the Year 8 Band at St Bede's and Stage Band and Brass Ensemble at Mentone Girls Grammar School. Jessica has experience working with a wide range of musicians of various ages and abilities and we look forward to working with her to continue the wonderful growth we have seen in the SAWB in the past few years. Jessica's first rehearsal with the SACB will be on Thursday 17th October, 5.45pm-7.30pm. As always, the SAWB welcomes players from the SACB and SSSB who would like to join in for some extra playing and fellowship. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Carolyn Atkinson for stepping into the role of SAWB Manager. Carolyn's friendly and welcoming attitude and her organisational skills are a wonderful asset for the SAWB and wider SACB organisation. The SAWB flourished under the leadership of Nicole Marshall and Jacinta Ewers during the past five years. We thank them for their work and look forward to the continued growth and musical development of the band under our new team led by Jessica and Carolyn, overseen by our MD, Andrew Mathers. Kind regards, Tracy (President)
