25.01.2022 **********GONZO’S GREAT GIRTH*********** Meet Southern Beaches’ Mr Gonzo the super cheeky galah, who presented to Dr Ben with a bit of a weighty problem. A large lump was growing from the left side of his body, greatly impacting on this sassy little fella’s groove. Mr Gonzo spent the day with us last week, where he was gently anaesthetised, enabling a very delicate procedure to remove the large and unsightly lump. Carefully pain managed, Gonzo woke up feeling very Fancy, ...free from the restrictions imposed by his mammoth passenger. The lump in question, was a large fatty lump known as a xanthoma, they can grow to quite a size and this one had started to outgrow it’s own blood supply and was in part dying(the black section). We are happy to announce this little fella is sporting a new knock out waistline, putting his best foot forward once more. Speedy Recovery Mr Gonzo See more

24.01.2022 BASTET’s BLOOD PRESSURE BATTLE The Beaches’ Mr Bastet came to see Dr Ben as he was just not feeling very well. Very miserable and not moving much.....just sad. Some tests later and an all important blood pressure check, it was discovered that Bastet, aptly named after the Egyptian Goddess of Cats, was suffering high blood pressure(greater than 200mmHg), causing the fragile lining of the retina in the eyes to detach and resulting in pounding headaches. High blood pre...ssure can be a silent killer, causing eye problems, disease of the heart and other organs, particularly the kidneys. Thankful for his new blood pressure medication Mr Bastet is now feeling fancier, with his pounding head a thing of the past and his peepers on the mend. His family said he is much happier and more smoochy at home. ......and yes, we were very careful to call him his actual name, without any slips.....BASTET Do not hesitate to ask for a blood pressure check for your middle age to elderly cat with their examination. Such a simple test that makes such a big health difference.
24.01.2022 *****SHOUT OUT TO POUCH PALS**** A big shout out to all, who pull over and check the pouches of our native wildlife, after they have been a road accident victim. This little lady was brought into us last Friday morning. She was considered too small to be cared for by the regular channels and so Nurse Hannah ( a qualified nurse & wildlife cater)has become her foster carer. It is a huge commitment, requiring round the clock care and feeding. But this little girl shows... that it is all worth while. Well Done to our fantastic community. PS: Please excuse Nurse Hannah if she seems a little more vacant than normal this week PPS: My husband Jon, is pitching in on parenting duties too and currently on duty. He fancies himself as her lifetime father and wants her to hang out in the garden with him and call her Skippy.......seriously. Fortunately Nurse Hannah is in charge.
23.01.2022 ****** MOLLUSC MUNCHING MOCHI ****** Miss Mochi was found as a little stray kitten and was first brought into us for desexing 3 months ago, but little did anyone know her lungs were full of worms. The little nasties almost blocked her anaesthetic tube before the start of surgery and poor Mochi had to be woken up in an oxygen cage... After some intensive care in hospital for 24 hours and weeks of treatment at home, Mochi bounced back and came in yesterday for repeat radiograph...s. After being given the all clear she could safely undergo her desexing procedure. The cat lung worm (Aelurostrongylus abstrusus) lives in slugs and snails and cats are infected when they eat these slimy critters. Who knows what Mochi was eating before she was found by her loving new family! No more escargot for you little one!
22.01.2022 *******CHRISTMAS BAKING******* .....and so we made these....part of a yearly tradition to let loose our creative sides.......... Looking forward to nibbling on them on Christmas Day.
22.01.2022 *********TICKS LOVE SPRING RAIN*********** Meet Orford’s delightful new resident, Mr Hector. Hector is new to Tas and has been grappling with the annoying locals, encountered, particularly this time of year. Spring means Tick time as those of us who live near coastal scrub and bush regions are only too aware. Our native wildlife play host to a few tick species, who are only too happy to hitch a lift on unsuspecting pets, often causing extreme irritation, potential for d...isease transmission and potential for tick toxicity. Poor Mr Hector developed extreme itchiness after a play in his backyard scrub, which left him frantically itching his entire body. Often the immature ticks are extremely difficult to see to the naked eye and it may take a couple of days of persistent irritation until these little critters are visible. Mr Hector would like to join me in advising you, that for those of you who walk your pets in regions where our native wildlife frequent, particularly around or during periods of high rainfall, consider chatting to us about one of the great flea and tick preventatives available to use of your pet. Mr Hector is feeling much more comfortable and wearing a new suit of armour protecting him from the annoying natives. Welcome to Tassie Mr Hector See more
22.01.2022 JUST THANK YOU A huge thank you to our beautiful community who trust us with the care of their beloved pets. We love what we do and our amazing personality packed patients, who are entrusted in our care, each with their own little story to tell. Yesterday we received this big thank you from one of our amazing families. You know who you are and we love that you are part of our Beaches’ Crew. We are so thankful to be there for you all. So blessed that we get to share the tears and the smiles together. Looking forward to the Yummies when we honour a very special boy and his journey
21.01.2022 BEACHES BRAVEHEART Wishing all the Dads an amazing Father’s Day. A shout out to all our wonderful Vets’ and Nurses’ Dads, who have had a hand in creating such stand out, caring, meticulous and empathic humans. Sending huge hugs to you all. To my own Dad, wishing you an amazing First Father’s Day in Heaven, Now at Peace. ... A big shout out to this week’s bravest little fella, whose Dad is the apple of his eye. The Beaches’ Mr Raffa, has endured considerable pain over the last one to two months, at the hands of an aggressive bone disease. In order to manage the pain, Mr Raffa underwent Surgery Last week to remove his limb. But nothing will keep this guy down, with typical Raffa Zest, he is approaching his recovery and learning to walk on 3 legs, with admirable bravery. A special little man, who no doubt is showering his Dad(and Mum) with lot’s of love today. You are truly the Bravest Raffy.
21.01.2022 ********PARVOVIRIS ALERT******* Please ensure your dog’s immunisation is current and please be aware that there is a small cluster of Parvovirus virus cases in the Eastern Suburbs. Until the full extent of this is known, consider avoiding taking your pets up to the Eastern Suburbs.
20.01.2022 ******HOT DAY SHENANIGANS*******
19.01.2022 **Smiles all-round** Last week Nurse Hannah & Georgia had a visit from some lovely Greyhounds who came in for their Free Dental Check during dental month, upon inspection the nurses found that Mr. Zac and his brothers Dutchie and Clinger had some mild dental tartar/plaque build up and required a general anaesthetic to undergo a Dental Scale and Polish. After their teeth cleaning procedure today the greyhound brothers are feeling fancy with their fresh pearly whites. Nurse Hannah would like to let the southern beaches community know that even though dental month is over, Hannah is still offering free dental consults/checks for your pets.
17.01.2022 *****WATCH OUT, GRASS SEEDS ABOUT***** ******JUST ASK MISS SCOUT****** Dodges Ferrian, Miss Scout, developed an intensely irritated ear this morning and has been frantically shaking her head throughout the day. Scout loves a roll in the grass, But BEWARE, we are entering what will be a bumper grass seed season. Keep grass cut short and do not allow dogs to run and play in grass with seed heads. We recommend clipping or regularly grooming those dogs who are prone to pesky grass seeds. Miss Scout is our second grass seed for the season, so it is definitely upon us.

15.01.2022 ********SPRING HAS SPRUNG********* This burst of Sunshine before the next bout of rain, is proudly brought to you by all the cuties in the Southern Beaches at the moment. Miss Coco presented yesterday with her little family of puppies. So lovely to share cuddles after meeting them for the first time a few weeks ago, on ultrasound. They all arrived safely and are blessed to be in the care of their beautiful mother. Adorable Miss Lulu the Frenchie, shocked me, as a surp...rise addition to traditional owners of West Highland White Terriers. Such a sweet personality to add to the mix. Little Mr Walter, the schnauzer dropped by for a puppy visit and won our hearts. Miss Rosie the Border Collie dropped by to share her news of an expectant bundle due to arrive in the next few weeks. Yes Spring is definitely in the air and we at the Beaches are loving it. See more

15.01.2022 *******FAREWELL PRINCE NUTTY****** Today was one of those days that we here at Southern Beaches Vet, never wanted to arrive. We had the honour of standing alongside our beloved Prince Nutty, Nutbags or NoNuts, friend and much adored Southern Beaches Pet, and his extra special human, to say a final farewell in the comfort on his beautiful home. Nutty was a star patient always sporting a certain ambivalent cheekiness with an extra helping of "Catittude". ... On his frequent hospital visits, his passion and enthusiasm for his food bowl and its contents, were second to none. Always one to resist intervention, he soon relaxed when hospitalised and we were blessed with a generous helping of thankful head boops, buzzing and smoochies. Nutty was a delight, our first patient to christen the new hospital cages, and the Penthouse Suite was aptly named in his honour: "Prince Nutty's Penthouse Suite". We will miss you Nutbags, it was an honour to care for you over the last 4 years and to have been part of your life's journey. Your beautiful foot prints have left a stamp on all of us who came to know the Cassanova you truly were. Big love and hugs to your precious human, whose heart you totally stole the day you arrived 16 years ago. May your heaven be filled with the chase of sequinned, sparkly mice and provide you with endless access to bountiful smorgasbords, and a warm "Girlfriend". Love you gorgeous boy, rest peacefully and painlessly now. We love and miss you endlessly
14.01.2022 **WE ARE OPEN** Just a friendly reminder that we are open 9:00am - 6:00 pm Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. 14.01.2022 *************CLOSED TODAY************* As a team we are off to celebrate a very busy 2020, adventuring with the amazing crew from #wildoceanadventures, at Eagle Hawk Neck. We are so excited about getting up close and personal with our wild life, including an amazing opportunity to swim with the seals in the wild. Merry Christmas everyone from our excited SBV family. We apologise for any inconvenience and in the event of an emergency we recommend you contact the closest vets in Sorell or AHVEC, Hobart's emergency vet, on 1300 302 912.
14.01.2022 ****STOP & TAKE A DEEP BREATH**** It is easy to see why the Brachycephalic Breeds with their squishy or shortened noses & their adoringly large eyes and snuffly greetings, are one of our most popular breeds. Amongst them: French Bull Dogs, such as Mr John, Pugs, King Charles Cavalier Spaniels, Shih Tzus, Pekingese, Staffordshire Bull Terriers and Bull Dogs, to name but a few, are often gifted with endearingly devoted personalities. Often the comedian in the family. As v...eterinarians, we often listen to recounts, of how much these little guys snore, how they tire easily on a walk, find it difficult to catch their breath, or even gasping for breath. They can often regurgitate their food or mucous from the back of their throat. The above can be a sign that your Pet may be suffering from Bravhycephalic Syndrome, a condition which may include narrow nostrils and/or an elongated soft palate that partially block your pet’s airways, making each breath a little more strenuous. This extra effort required to breath in 29 000 times in 24 hours, can lead to increased pressure in your pet’s respiratory system and further complications over your pet’s lifetime, that can become life threatening. Mr John dropped by for his big boy surgery last week and a procedure to shorten his soft palate, so that he can manage those deep breaths with pesky little flaps hanging in the way. We are happy to say, he is noticeably quieter after his procedure and his family will be relieved to have one fewer snorers in the household. Wishing you a speedy recovery Mr John.
12.01.2022 ***********BEACHES’ BEAUTY******^***** Cuddly Miss Mabel dropped by this week for her big girl procedure. She was a delight to look after for the day. Wishing you a speedy and comfortable recovery week sweet angel.
12.01.2022 ********BUSH DISHWASHER******* Got to love the campground upgrades at Fortescue Bay. Down there last week and the newly installed dishwashers are very efficient.
11.01.2022 ***** FRIENDLY FORREST ******* Mr Forrest (after Forrest Gump) is one of the Southern Beaches many cute and furry spring lambs. After a tricky lambing, Forrest dropped by to have a check up and left with a clean bill of health - and we couldn’t resist a quick photo op in the craypot!

08.01.2022 *****HELPING JOHN THE CAMEL MAN ON HIS ADVENTURE**** The Southern Beaches Team had a camel adventure a couple of weeks ago and ventured to Cascade, to suture up Arthur's leg, after it had slipped down a road side storm drain and he had cut it down to tendon and bone. To say we enjoyed the adventure was an understatement. We had a blast and are happy to say that Arthur's nasty leg wound is healing wonderfully, he has been on rest and extremely light duties since the surgery. Love my work family, they are absolute rock stars.

07.01.2022 ALPACA ADVENTURES Dr Ben is settling in to the demands and adventures, that is the lot of a Southern Beaches Vet. This week has found him getting out and about in our beautiful community to care for some of the larger Southern Beaches Pets. Delivering lambs, treating horses and a very exciting trip to Carlton River, one evening to collect two units of blood from a healthy alpaca buck, in order to transfuse an older female, suffering severe anaemia. The blood transfusion, enabled a Caesarian to be safely performed. This is Ben & Krackle, a cria who popped by on Friday for an exam, he was given a clean bill of health. Here’s to loving all creatures great and small.
06.01.2022 *******JUST KIDDING******** Welcome Spring! 04.01.2022 *****FAREWELL OUR WHITE BEACH GIRL***** Yesterday I had the honour of standing alongside the beautiful Miss Lizzie and her loving family and friends as we peacefully set free our White Beach Girl. Lizzie rapidly became part of our Beaches Family, in 2017, presenting as a very unwell 8 year old, struggling to walk and ageing rapidly. Together, Lizzie and I tapped into her fountain of youth, diagnosing her with the infinitely treatable disease, Diabetes and from that point w...e never looked back. For 3.5 years, we have regularly heard of her adventures. Delighting in her regular hospital visits for her diabetes check ups. A hospital cage was never acceptable, Lizzie knew there was always a warm bed awaiting her beside the reception desk, where she supervised the daily goings on of the veterinary clinic. Despite the devotion of her beloved parents Tania and Andrew, when they relocated to their new home in White Beach, Lizzie was determined to retain ownership of her old home and its new occupants, whose hands were forced to learn how to give Lizzie her Insulin injections, due to her frequent visits. Her enthusiasm for life was bountiful as was her insatiable pursuit of a ball game. Lizzie was the brightest light and stabilising force that made a house a family home. You have left your paw mark on the many hearts you reached out to and touched. We open our arms and release you, free to run without restrictions and breath effortlessly once more. Farewell Sweetest White Beach Girl.
