21.01.2022 January 2020 Newsletter New Member This month we welcome a new member Doug Leicht. Some of you may know Doug through his former ownership of a tackle and bait... shop at Highfields or his involvement with the Oakey Fish Re-Stocking Association. Leslie Trip 11th and 12th January Eleven members made the trip to Leslie Dam. They were Chop Muir, Chris Mogg, Trevor Gill, Vanda Gill, Jake Gill, Noel Purcell, Vincent Cormack, Col Jones, Peter Delima, Nick Downey and Doug Leicht. Chop and Chris used Friday afternoon to trial a range of lures and colours but didnt have any success. In view of this the general talk was that bait may be the answer for the weekend. We got going pretty early on Saturday, only to find that Vincent (in kayak) had already been on the water for about two hours. The weather was pleasant early but we knew a hot day was forecast. Now to locate the fish and have some fun. This proved a lot more difficult than we had anticipated. By lunch time most of us were starting to doubt our tactics and/or ability. Mid-afternoon a southerly rolled in and got stronger by the hour, with a few anchors not holding in the conditions. While it was tough going for most of us the trio of Peter, Col and Nick (all in one boat) had some success, perhaps due to the bait they were using being live shrimp. Peter got the chocolates for the most fish for the weekend with three, while Col, Nick and Trevor all bagged a pair. All up there were eleven fish weighed in. On Sunday morning it was still blowing a gale and forecast to continue. The few of us who had intended going out decided the conditions were not favorable so we headed home. The members draw of $100 was won by Doug Leicht (yes - the new member lucky charm delivered again) and the second draw of $25 was won by Vanda Gill. Biggest weigh-ins from the weekend were: Yellow Belly 1.18kg Peter Delima Silver 0.95kg Nick Downey Jew 0.92kg Nick Downey February Trips There are two trips this month for the keen anglers. Firstly, on 8-9 Feb to Callide Dam to chase the barramundi and big yellow belly. Then on 22-23 Feb to Cressbrook Dam for the annual competition against the Crows Nest Fishing Club when we will be vying for the Kevin Dukes Memorial Trophy. The trophy was narrowly won by Cabarlah last year. This is a great weekend to renew old friendships and make new ones, so looking forward to a good rollup. There will be a sausage sizzle on the Saturday night. Regards Noel Purcell Secretary
