24.01.2022 The Whitsundays is piloting a tourism-led restoration of the Great Barrier Reef, working alongside Southern Cross University and the Australian Institute of Mar...ine Science to scale-up Coral IVF, a technique pioneered by Professor Peter Harrison. In a world-first trial, Whitsunday tourism operators, vessel owners and the community collected coral spawn from the ocean’s surface around Hook Island and placed it in specially modified larvae nursery pools. The trial shows trained citizen scientists can successfully capture coral spawn, grow larvae in pools and deploy those larvae onto the reef," Professor Harrison said. We’ve got coral settlement to show that we’ve completed the reproductive process. Professor Harrison pioneered the Coral IVF technique with colleagues in the Philippines eight years ago and for the past four years has been refining it on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. The larval pool concept is his idea, too, and the designs have been evolving each year to improve the efficiency of spawn capture and larval culturing directly on the reef. 13.01.2022 Worried about what might be under the surface when you jump in the ocean? Southern Cross University has spearheaded a technology-based marine study in develop...ing drones for shark surveillance in collaboration with the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI), which may prove to be a life saver this summer. Dr Andrew Colefax from the University's National Marine Science Centre is collaborating with astrophysicists to develop non-destructive shark-bite mitigation. 'Sci-eye' is a new artificial intelligence software which would allow drones to detect sharks in real-time without requiring a ‘line-of-sight’ operator. This collaboration is an extension from a partnership between Macquarie University and the NSW DPI that utilised the data from the drone trials which were part of Dr Colefax’s PhD with Southern Cross University. 08.01.2022 Our own Great Barrier Reef was its breathtaking best for one of the world's greatest natural phenomena: the annual spectacle of the mass coral spawn when the re...ef explodes with new life. Why are corals so important? They are the building blocks for coral reefs, one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems on earth. Each component of a reef is interconnected with everything else, whether it be corals, sponges, crustaceans, fish, turtles, rays, sharks or dolphins. Southern Cross University’s Professor Peter Harrison, Director of the Marine Ecology Research Centre, is leading groundbreaking Coral IVF projects on the Great Barrier Reef and was one of the experts featured in ABC TV + iview's Reef Live.
