25.01.2022 THE TAHUNE FIRES Due to the close proximity of the Tahune Airwalk area fires to Geeveston, and Ian Mattice fulfilling his role as 3rd Officer of the Geeveston Fire Brigade, Southern Dent and Shine has had to slow its work operations. Ian does this for neither press, publicity nor pay.... For those few customers we have had to either cancel or postpone firm bookings for, we apologise and do so only out of necessity at present. If Southern Dent and Shine dont produce work, we dont get paid, so you can be sure we will be back into it as soon as humanly possible. Thank you for your patience, your continued support, and please lets give some gratitude to the extraordinarily large percentage of unpaid volunteers lending their time to fighting fires all across Tasmania

23.01.2022 Super busy at Southern Dent and Shine on some long term rust and restoration projects at present, so heres a look back at some of the cool stuff weve had the privilege of working on in the past. 23.01.2022 WHY QUOTING IS HARD Part 2. Paint (putting the PAIN in autobody lol) At Southern Dent and Shine we come across all sorts of cars needing all sorts of different repairs. The repairs themselves are never an issue. Matching a fresh paint colour to pre existing external coatings can very much be a BIG issue. ... Heres a handful of reasons why. 1. Car manufacturers provide a paint code denoting colour of vehicle at manufacture somewhere on the car. Yes, for all intents and purposes that is the colour of your car. But within that one code could be as many as 5 or 6, sometimes more variants to that one colour, and hopefully one will match, but thats privileged info apparently haha 2. Choice of colour. Yes! Your brand new Mazda in Soul Crystal Red looks amazing!! But recreating those 4 tinted layers under clear coat finish under the best of conditions on the best of days is difficult anyway. Some colours just suck. Pearl white is a good example. 3. New vs old. You cant age paint. You can only attempt to match to whatever colour and shade it has ended up over time. This can unfortunately mean that the top of your car is now 3 shades lighter than the bottom. Even a fresh clear coat over old colour can make a huge difference in your perception of that colour. 4. Old repairs. The previous repairer has already gone through the whole colour mixing and matching process. If hes landed a hair shade off in his work, the paint code to the car is now a guide only, and adjustments will have to be made from that base code. Running our own paint mixing system is the one thing we dont do ourselves at Southern Dent and Shine. We rely on Darren from Spectrum Car Paints and his years of experience to mix and match all our trickier colours in De Beers solvents, and a smashing job he does of it too. 23.01.2022 The Great XB GT Bonnet Rescue!! Its actually difficult to describe the depraved levels of neglect and abuse this thing has experienced in its life. Revenge was had when the pins let go and shes gone backwards at least twice onto someones windscreen haha Rust, dents, bent hinge reinforcements, hammered lines, 80s acrylic paint(!!!)...very little not gone wrong. But when a GT bonnet more or less in one piece presents itself, we fix it of course. 19.01.2022 What this year needs is a glitter bomb!! The lockdown at Southern Dent and Shine has given us the opportunity to trial some new products and demonstrate the amazing skills we have This is a great result using a fabulous product from all Australian specialty paint and refinishing company, DNA. This is the Dry Flake system with a mixture of Shimmering Flakez, Metal Flakez and Hologram Flakez, all applied using the DNA Dry Flake Gun. 11.01.2022 WHY QUOTING IS HARD Part 1. Planning your budget What youre looking at here is/was the left hand wheel arch from a HG ute, that had indeed aleady fairly recently (within 7 years) been for rust repair through another shop.... Customer; yeh theres couple of bubbles on the arch, how much for you to fix them up so I can put on the chrome moulding I just bought? Me; no problem, if it is indeed just a couple of rust spots then $x should see you right. Customer; awesome thats right on my budget. Me on the day; gets the drill out with the strip disc to investigate the spots only to find 2 inch thick bog over some of the wickedest hack section work Ive ever seen in my career lol. And the moulding wasnt even CLOSE to fitting lol. So for all intents and purposes, what started as what appeared to be a small issue has now blown out to be a big one. Customers budget now has to be extended and nobody knew until this piece was pulled out from under all the bog, into its undies and inevitably needing removal because its just sooo bad. Moral of story; we have no idea what may possibly be required to fix that bubble. Until we properly investigate. Have a good think about your budget, then add 20-25% to capture the unknown. These cars are old, they have old repairs and some of them have carried those repairs pretty bloody well for a long long time until they cant anymore. Food for thought Stay safe peoples. Stay home.

Apart from some forethought put into product purchase to shore us up for a bit -not hoarded all the sandpaper I promise - its business as usual here at Southern Dent and Shine! 08.01.2022 Aussie tough on Straya Day!! This XB is officially THE mostly extensively rust damaged vehicle weve taken in at Southern Dent and Shine. 2 years in the making, from a Queenstown paddock ornament back into a respectable, original 6 cylinder driver. Look at any one part of this car and weve cut it, welded it, ground it, made it straight, sealed it and painted it. Budget was limited for what was needed, but at the time we still had a point to prove to Tassie that we didn...t just do a bit of detailing haha. So through fire and sometimes famine we pushed on, shared some works with you along the way, gathered a heap of new customers and followers, and eventually, finished to the point she can go for her heart surgery and some bits n pieces. 08.01.2022 DAY 10 Suffice to say, Southern Dent and Shine is at a complete standstill having been officially relocated 3 times since Monday the 21st. Ian has been at it for the entire stretch on little sleep and alot of adrenaline. Geeveston Fire Brigade has been outstanding, as have our enormous contingent of visiting crews. Make no mistake, this is a largely volunteer army working day and night to slay the beast threatening to consume us. Quick shout out to a couple of local Geevest...on business owners who themselves have gone above and beyond to offer some continuity in services at a nightmarish time for our little town. Ricky Clark, Geeveston United service station keeping everyone with a continued fuel supply. Ian MacGill, Geeveston Pharmacy, camping on a couch in the back of the shop for 7 days now, keeping ppl supplied with important medications. Lindsay Doyle, for providing graders and work cutting fire breaks to help save town. Michael Robertson, local farmer running around like a blue arsed fly for over a week helping clear paddocks and hay.
